Kontextberoende generering av träd för dataspel

Rapporten undersöker om kontextberoende generering av träd är lämpligt att använda i dataspel. I arbetet presenteras ett system som möjliggör procedurell generering av träd som omgivningen kan påverka. De faktorer som inverkar på trädets grenstruktur är solljus, vind och gravitation. Projektet bidrar med en lösning till att minska utvecklingstiderna för dataspel genom att möjliggöra att trädmodeller algoritmiskt genereras i datorn istället för att de modelleras av en artist.

Prestanda hos Realtidsväxande träd jämfört med statisk mesh / Performance of real time growing trees compared to static mesh

Detta arbete undersöker prestandakraven hos realtidsväxande procedurellt genererande träd baserade på L-systemet genom att jämföra dessa med identiska träd representerade i form av statisk mesh. Ett stokastiskt parametriskt kontextberoende L-system med hakparenteser har implementerats i en enkel testmiljö baserad på OpenGL, statisk mesh har implementerats i form av display list. Undersökningen har jämfört de två teknikerna baserat på renderingstid, minnesanvändning, och genereringstid av Lsystem, såväl som hur de båda teknikerna skalar med antal vertiser och L-systemslängd. Resultaten visar på att de L-systemsbaserade träden har längre renderingstid än de representerade med statisk mesh, utöver tid för att växa träden via L-systemet före var rendering. De L-systemsbaserade träden visade dock på lägre minnesanvändning än sin statiska motsvarighet. Resultaten visar även på att de tekniker som jämförts inte nödvändigtvis var optimalt implementerade, och arbetet avslutas med en diskussion om hur detta skulle kunna åtgärdas i framtida arbeten. / <p>Det finns övrigt digitalt material (t.ex. film-, bild- eller ljudfiler) eller modeller/artefakter tillhörande examensarbetet som ska skickas till arkivet.</p><p>There are other digital material (eg film, image or audio files) or models/artifacts that belongs to the thesis and need to be archived.</p>

Representing information using parametric visual effects on groupware avatars

Parametric visual effects such as texture generation and shape grammars can be controlled to produce visually perceptible variation. This variation can be rendered on avatars in groupware systems in real time to represent user information in online environments. This type of extra information has been shown to enrich recognition and characterization, but has previously been limited to iconic representations. Modern, highly graphical virtual worlds require more naturalistic and stylistically consistent techniques to represent information.<p> A number of different parametric texture generation techniques are considered and a set of texture characteristics are developed. The variations of these texture characteristics are examined in a study to determine how well users can recognize the visual changes in each. Another study is done to determine how much screen space is required for users to recognize these visual changes in a subset of these texture characteristics.<p> Additionally, an example shape generation system is developed as an example of how shape grammars and L-systems can be used to represent information using a space ship metaphor.<p> These different parametric visual effects are implemented in an example prototype system using space ships. This prototype is a complete functioning groupware application developed in XNA that utilizes many parametric texture and shape effects.

An investigation into mechanisms of shoot bending in a clone of Populus tremuloides exhibiting 'crooked' architecture

Populus tremuloides Michx. (trembling aspen) is a tree species native to much of North America, characterized by an excurrent crown with horizontal to ascending branches and a dominant terminal leader. An unusual clone of trembling aspen was discovered in the 1940s near Hafford, Saskatchewan. This clone demonstrates abnormal crown morphology, in which vigorous shoots bend down, ultimately leading to an overall twisted or crooked appearance. The objectives of the present study were to investigate the mechanism of shoot bending by (1) characterizing the process and timing of bending, (2) evaluating structural aspects of developing wild-type and crooked aspen shoots, and (3) comparing anatomical features of bending shoots with wild-type shoots. L-system reconstruction models of 3-D digitized shoot development revealed dramatic bending midway through the growing season. Morphological analyses revealed that crooked aspen shoots had greater taper compared to the wild-type, typically known to create shoots resist deflection and bending. However, preliminary strength analyses indicated that crooked aspen shoots were less rigid, with smaller values of Young’s modulus compared to wild-type shoots. Anatomical investigations revealed differences in several structural tissues between developing wild-type and crooked aspen shoots, and differences within crooked aspen shoots. Primary phloem fibres on the upper side of bending shoots maintained relatively large lumens while those on the lower side were fully lignified, similar to those of mature vertically oriented wild-type leader shoots. These differences may result in differential extension growth early in development, and/or uneven mechanical support later on, ultimately resulting in bending due to self-weight. Gelatinous fibres (G-fibres), characteristic of tension wood (TW), were found throughout older wild-type and vertically oriented crooked aspen shoots; however, G-fibres were only found on the lower side of crooked aspen shoots. These lateral differences could have contributed to shoot bending by actively bending shoots downwards, or lack of TW on the upper side may not have prevented biomechanical bending from self weight. Nevertheless, shoot bending stops at the end of the growing season, suggesting that the mechanisms involved in creating bent shoots are only functional during the first growing season. / February 2006

This thesis deals with the procedural generation of building models based on a given pattern. The community project OpenStreetMap is used for obtaining datasets that create the buildings platform patterns. A brief survey of classifiers and formal grammars for modeling is introduced. Designing an estate classifier and algorithm for building generation is practical aspect of this thesis, including the algorithm implementation. 3D output meshes are rendered using OpenGL in real-time.
