A figura de Horace Lane: lutas de representações e formação da rede de escolas americanas no Brasil (1885-1912) / The figure of Horace Lane: struggles of representations and the formation of the American schools network in Brazil (1885-1912)

Silva, Ivanilson Bezerra da 10 September 2015 (has links)
This study about the figure of Horace Manley Lane takes into account the struggles of representations and the formation of the American Schools network in Brazil in the years 1885 to 1912. Our objective is to shed light to this person whose actions were marked by power disputes, and to his educational and missionary practices. Lane is traditionally known as a consultant for the public education in São Paulo, but as we shall see, his actions go further than that which is presented in the constructed representations in historiography and in the Brazilian educational field. As an educator, he was a defender of the American Presbyterian educational model. In Brazil, he prompted the circulation of some elements of what was then known as modern pedagogy. Moreover, this paper discusses the fact that one of his propositions to disseminate the American Presbyterianism culture and values was the creation of a American schools network. Our hypothesis is that among his practices as an educator there was the organization of schools, especially in cities where he could find the support of Masons, Presbyterians, Republicans; people who were linked to his personal network, thus configuring his power relations with social agents connected with the Masonry, the education and the Presbyterianism. As an educator organized the Mackenzie College, the first private institution of higher education in Brazil. As a missionary, he presented no connection with the Brazilian Presbyterian field, nor did he attend religious services here. Therefore, he did not work as the first American Presbyterians, through direct evangelization, but rather through education as a way of indirect evangelization. As a missionary and an educator, he built representations about Brazil, the local education, politics, and the catechism of the indigenous people. Those representations allow us to understand the representations and practices which are little known or worked on in historiography and on the perspective of history of education. To a theoretical foundation we bring representation concepts developed by Roger Chartier, the social place category, strategy and tactics in Michel de Certeau, the field concept in Bordieu, the society of ideas in Bastian, and the evidential paradigm in Ginzburg, among others. The research uses primary sources, such as, educational reports produced by Horace Lane, American Presbyterian Church reports, educational prospects, missionaries reports, newspapers and others.

Evaluation of Lane Detection Algorithms based on an Embedded Platform

Nguyen, Trung Boa 30 June 2017 (has links)
Real-time lane detection or localization is a crucial problem in modern Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), especially in Automated Driving System. This thesis estimates the possibility to implement a lane detection system in the available low-power embedded hardware. Various state-of-the-art Lane Detection algorithms are assessed based on a number of proposed criteria. From the result of the evaluation, three different algorithms are constructed and implemented in the hardware using OpenCV library. The lane detection stage is done with different methods: using Hough Transform for line detection or randomly sampling hypotheses which are straight lines or cubic splines over the pre-processed binary image. Weights of the hypotheses are then calculated based on their positions in the image. The hypothesis which has highest weight or best position will be chosen to represent lane marking. To increase the performance of the system, tracking stage is introduced with the help of Particle Filter or Kalman Filter. The systems are then tested with several different datasets to evaluate the speed, performance and ability to work in real-time. In addition, the system interfaces with CAN bus using a CAN interface, so that the output data can be sent as messages via the CAN bus to other systems.

Crash Prediction and Collision Avoidance using Hidden Markov Model

Prabu, Avinash 08 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Automotive technology has grown from strength to strength in the recent years. The main focus of research in the near past and the immediate future are autonomous vehicles. Autonomous vehicles range from level 1 to level 5, depending on the percentage of machine intervention while driving. To make a smooth transition from human driving and machine intervention, the prediction of human driving behavior is critical. This thesis is a subset of driving behavior prediction. The objective of this thesis is to predict the possibility of crash and implement an appropriate active safety system to prevent the same. The prediction of crash requires data of transition between lanes, and speed ranges. This is achieved through a variation of hidden Markov model. With the crash prediction and analysis of the Markov models, the required ADAS system is activated. The above concept is divided into sections and an algorithm was developed. The algorithm is then scripted into MATLAB for simulation. The results of the simulation is recorded and analyzed to prove the idea.

LANE TRACKING USING DEPENDENT EXTENDED TARGET MODELS

akbari, behzad January 2021 (has links)
Detection of multiple-lane markings (lane-line) on road surfaces is an essential aspect of autonomous vehicles. Although several approaches have been proposed to detect lanes, detecting multiple lane-lines consistently, particularly across a stream of frames and under varying lighting conditions is still a challenging problem. Since the road's markings are designed to be smooth and parallel, lane-line sampled features tend to be spatially and temporally correlated inside and between frames. In this thesis, we develop novel methods to model these spatial and temporal dependencies in the form of the target tracking problem. In fact, instead of resorting to the conventional method of processing each frame to detect lanes only in the space domain, we treat the overall problem as a Multiple Extended Target Tracking (METT) problem. In the first step, we modelled lane-lines as multiple "independent" extended targets and developed a spline mathematical model for the shape of the targets. We showed that expanding the estimations across the time domain could improve the result of estimation. We identify a set of control points for each spline, which will track over time. To overcome the clutter problem, we developed an integrated probabilistic data association fi lter (IPDAF) as our basis, and formulated a METT algorithm to track multiple splines corresponding to each lane-line.In the second part of our work, we investigated the coupling between multiple extended targets. We considered the non-parametric case and modeled target dependency using the Multi-Output Gaussian Process. We showed that considering dependency between extended targets could improve shape estimation results. We exploit the dependency between extended targets by proposing a novel recursive approach called the Multi-Output Spatio-Temporal Gaussian Process Kalman Filter (MO-STGP-KF). We used MO-STGP-KF to estimate and track multiple dependent lane markings that are possibly degraded or obscured by traffic. Our method tested for tracking multiple lane-lines but can be employed to track multiple dependent rigid-shape targets by using the measurement model in the radial space In the third section, we developed a Spatio-Temporal Joint Probabilistic Data Association Filter (ST-JPDAF). In multiple extended target tracking problems with clutter, sometimes extended targets share measurements: for example, in lane-line detection, when two-lane markings pass or merge together. In single-point target tracking, this problem can be solved using the famous Joint Probabilistic Data Association (JPDA) filter. In the single-point case, even when measurements are dependent, we can stack them in the coupled form of JPDA. In this last chapter, we expanded JPDA for tracking multiple dependent extended targets using an approach called ST-JPDAF. We managed dependency of measurements in space (inside a frame) and time (between frames) using different kernel functions, which can be learned using the trained data. This extension can be used to track the shape and dynamic of dependent extended targets within clutter when targets share measurements. The performance of the proposed methods in all three chapters are quanti ed on real data scenarios and their results are compared against well-known model-based, semi-supervised, and fully-supervised methods. The proposed methods offer very promising results. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Deep Q-Learning for Lane Localization : Exploring Reinforcement Learning for Accurate Lane Detection / Djupinlärning med Q-lärande för fillokalisation : Utforskning av förstärkningsinlärning för noggrann filavkänning

Ganesan, Aishwarya January 2024 (has links)
In autonomous driving, achieving fast and reliable lane detection is essential. This project explores a two-step lane detection and localization approach, diverging from relying solely on end-to-end deep learning methods, which often struggle with curved or occluded lanes. Specifically, we investigate the feasibility of training a deep reinforcement learning-based agent to adjust the detected lane, manipulating either the lane points or the parameters of a Bézier curve. However, the study found that reinforcement learning-based localization, particularly on datasets like TuSimple, did not perform as well as anticipated, despite efforts to enhance performance using various metrics. Introducing curves to expand the localizer's scope did not surpass the point-based approach, indicating the need for further refinement for Deep Q-learning localization to be feasible. Although optimization techniques like Double Deep Q-Network showed improvements, the study did not support the hypothesis that curves with Deep Q-learning offer superior performance, highlighting the necessity for additional research into alternative methods to achieve more accurate lane detection and localization in autonomous driving systems using reinforcement learning.
