This dissertation is focused on multiple testing procedures to be used in data that are naturally grouped or possess a spatial structure. We propose `Two-Stage' procedure to control the False Discovery Rate (FDR) in situations where one-sided hypothesis testing is appropriate, such as astronomical source detection. Similarly, we propose a `Three-Stage' procedure to control the mixed directional False Discovery Rate (mdFDR) in situations where two-sided hypothesis testing is appropriate, such as vegetation monitoring in remote sensing NDVI data. The Two and Three-Stage procedures have provable FDR/mdFDR control under certain dependence situations. We also present the Adaptive versions which are examined under simulation studies. The `Stages' refer to testing hypotheses both group-wise and individually, which is motivated by the belief that the dependencies among the p-values associated with the spatially oriented hypotheses occur more locally than globally. Thus, these `Staged' procedures test hypotheses in groups that incorporate the local, unknown dependencies of neighboring p-values. If a group is found significant, further investigation is done to the individual p-values within that group. For the vegetation monitoring data, we extend the investigation by providing some spatio-temporal models and forecasts to some regions where significant change was detected through the multiple testing procedure. / Statistics

yes / The aim of the experiment reported here was to investigate the processes underlying the construction of truthful and deliberately fabricated memories. Properties of memories created to be intentionally false (fabricated memories) were compared to properties of memories believed to be true (true memories). Participants recalled and then wrote or spoke true memories and fabricated memories of everyday events. It was found that true memories were reliably more vivid than fabricated memories and were nearly always recalled from a first-person perspective. In contrast, fabricated differed from true memories in that they were judged to be reliably older, were more frequently recalled from a third-person perspective, and linguistic analysis revealed that they required more cognitive effort to generate. No notable differences were found across modality of reporting. Finally, it was found that intentionally fabricated memories were created by recalling and then “editing” true memories. Overall, these findings show that true and fabricated memories systematically differ, despite the fact that both are based on true memories.

An extension of the original Ott-Grebogy-Yorke control scheme is used on a simple double pendulum. The base point of the double pendulum moves in both horizontal and vertical directions which leads to rather complicated behavior.A delay coordinate is used to reconstruct the attractor. The required dimension is determined by the False Nearest Neighbor analysis. A newly developed Fixed Point Transformation method is used to identify the unstable periodic orbit (UPO). Two different system parameters are used to control the motion. Minimum parameter constraints are studied. The use of discrete values for parameter changes is also investigated. Based on these investigations, a new on-off control scheme is proposed to simplify the implementation of the controller and minimize the delay in applying the control. / Ph. D.

Oviposition and dispersal responses of the two spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) to fenvalerate and permethrin residues in soybeans Glycine max (L) MerrillDonahue, Daniel Joseph January 1985 (has links)
Laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate Tetranychus urticae Koch dispersal response to fenvalerate and permethrin. A petri dish spider mite trap which allows the partitioning of the dispersal response into spindown and walkoff categories was developed. Fenvalerate induced the more severe dispersal response.
A greenhouse experiment was conducted to evaluate Tetranychus urticae oviposition site selection in response to residues of fenvalerate and permethrin, at two levels of residue deposition. When pyrethroid-free leaf surface was available, nearly all eggs were found on the untreated surface, away from the pyrethroid residues. When pyrethroid-free leaf surface was not available, a substantial number of eggs were found suspended by silk threads above the treated surface. The results were found to be in agreement with the general pyrethroid avoidance hypothesis.
A series of greenhouse experiments were conducted to evaluate Tetranychus urticae oviposition response following impingement, and contact with residues of fenvalerate and permethrin. In all instances the pyrethroids were found to reduce the number of eggs oviposited. Mites recovered after several days, and oviposition returned to normal. The results did not lend support to the hormoligosis hypothesis of insecticide induced mite outbreaks.
Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted to evaluate Tetranychus urticae oviposition response, over time, to soybeans which have received an application of fenvalerate of permethrin. Comparing the Cognitive Mechanisms of False Memories with the Misinformation and DRM ParadigmsO'Neill, Meagan 16 June 2017 (has links)
Many methodologies have been used to generate false memories, with the misinformation (MI) paradigm and the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm being the most commonly studied. The MI paradigm generates false memories based on retroactive interference across episodes, while the DRM paradigm generates false memories based on semantic similarities across stimuli. Since current research is ambiguous about whether the processes for different types of false memories are similar, the purpose of this project was to compare the neural mechanisms between MI and DRM false memories. We used a novel paradigm to limit methodological differences, while maintaining the defining characteristics of each paradigm. We made ERP predictions for false memories in both paradigms based on four current cognitive theories of false memories: fuzzy-trace theory, spreading activation/monitoring theory, global matching models, and source of activation confusion (SAC) model. We found no LPC, FN400, or N2 neural differences between the two types of false memories. This result is discussed in the context of the theories and the implications about our understanding of false memories. Our results support that there may not be mechanistic differences in false memory recollection when paradigms to produce the false memories are similar. / Ph. Our results support that there may not be differences in false memory recollection when paradigms to produce the false memories are similar.

(Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), is an indigenous pest of citrus fruit in southern Africa, and is a
pest of high phytosanitary concern, impacting negatively on the export of fresh citrus
fruit from South Africa to some international markets. FCM is a particularly serious pest
in the Citrusdal area in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. FCM is known to
infest most types of citrus, with navel oranges being particularly prone to attack, whereas
lemons are not considered to be a favoured host. Conventional control strategies that rely
on the use of insecticides are of limited use due to high levels of insecticide resistance in
FCM populations. Mating disruption, the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) and the
integration of different control techniques are options that are currently being adopted.
Little is known about FCM host preferences in this geographical area, or about its
dispersal capacity. The ability of FCM to migrate between various host patches,
including citrus orchards and indigenous fynbos vegetation, and its ability to maintain a
viable population in alternative host plants when there is no fruit available for infestation
in citrus orchards has not been well studied. Knowledge of these largely behavioural
facets is important in planning an effective control strategy for FCM.
Towards addressing this dearth of knowledge, FCM pheromone traps were set out in
transects in the Citrusdal area. These transects included citrus orchards, and extended
beyond citrus orchards, to include a range of habitat types and elevational gradients. This
provided a grid to assess the spatial and temporal distribution of male FCM in the area.
In addition, intensive sampling and inspection of potential host plant material was
undertaken in the area in an attempt to identify any alternative host plants.

Biology and ecology of the false codling moth, Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Meyrick)De Jager, Zoe Marthalise 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Thaumatotibia leucotreta, the false codling moth (FCM), is a phytosanitary pest in South Africa posing a substantial threat to many of the country’s international export markets. Its pest status is of high importance because it has a wide ecological range and has been reported in all areas where citrus is produced in South Africa. Many methods of control have been implemented, such as chemical and cultural control, mating disruption and sterile insect releases. There was a need to obtain a more accurate understanding of FCM biology on deciduous fruit in South Africa and this then us to pose the questions described in the chapters to follow.
The first aim was focused on the possibility of FCM diapause during winter. If FCM were to undergo diapause this could pose further problems for control methods, but knowledge thereof could also assist in more accurate and timely control methods. Considering past research on other Lepidoptera species, four physiological traits were chosen as indicative of a diapause state. Water loss rate, metabolic rate and the supercooling points should be lower if the individuals were in a diapause state, with a higher fat content expected for these individuals. Diapause induction was attempted through a gradual lowering of the environmental temperature in combination with longer nights to simulate overwintering conditions. Diapause was not observed in these experimental individuals.
The second aim was to better understand the field biology of FCM. This was studied through in-field flight ability studies and damage assessments on four fruit kinds. Six release dates were used to measure the flight ability. The highest recapture rates were at minimum temperatures above 16°C and maximum temperatures averaging above 30°C, although the recapture rates were not significant in relation to the amount released. The recapture rates in the different fruit kinds were not significantly different, with the amount recaptured at the closest distance of 30 m being significantly more than that of the other distances. This was also only for the last release at the warmest temperatures. Fruit damage assessments were conducted and we were able to rear wild FCM from Granny smith apples, Forelle pears, Larry Ann plums and Satsuma and Clementine citrus cultivars. Citrus infestations had the highest count and a prolonged occurrence compared to the other varieties, due to its later harvest period. The third aim was to study the developmental parameters of FCM in different fruit kinds and an artificial medium. Firstly, FCM did not infest apples, Royal Gala and Pink lady’s, under laboratory conditions. Results were obtained using Forelle pears, Clementines and Thompson seedless grapes. On average the grapes had the shortest FCM developmental time from egg to adult stage, followed by oranges and then pears. Pears had the lowest developmental success rate, with that of oranges and grapes being much higher. Infestations took place at the stalk end of the fruit for the grapes and oranges, with the pears being infested at the calyx end.
Future research should include an in-field life cycle, to determine the life cycle of FCM on different economically important fruit kinds under field conditions. The focus could also be shifted to where FCM overwinter, leading to better preventative control leading to lower infestation pressure during harvest periods. This is of utmost importance in an environment where maximum residue levels for pesticides dictate market access. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Thaumatotibia leucotreta, die vals kodling mot (VKM) is ‘n fitosanitere pes in Suid Afrika, wat kan lei tot groot finansiele verliese. Die VKM se wye gasheerreeks en die feit dat dit al in al die sitrus verbouings-areas in Suid Afrika opgelet is, maak dit ‘n ernstige pes. Daar word van verskeie beheer metodes gebruik gemaak, insluitend chemiese en kulturele metodes. In sommige areas word daar ook van paaringsontwrigting en steriele insek vrylatings gebruik gemaak en hierdie metodes word gewoonlik met ander gekombineer. Daar is ‘n groot behoefte vir meer inligting omtrent die status van VKM in sagtevrugte in Suid Afrika en het gelei tot die vrae wat in hierdie studie aangespreuk word.
Die eerste doelwit was om te bepaal of die VKM wel diapouse ondergaan. Ons het ondervind dat die VKM nie Royal Gala of Pink lady kultivars kan infesteer onder laboratorium toestande nie. Die vrugsoorte wat dus ontwikkeling kon onderhou was Forelle pere, Clementines en Thompson pitlose druiwe. Die ontwikkeling vanaf eier na volwasse stadium was die kortste op druiwe, gevolg deur lemoene en pere. Die pere het die minste VKM onderhou in vergelyking met die lemoene en druiwe. Al die vrugte is binnegedring naby die aansluiting van die stingel aan die vrugte, behalwe die pere wat nader aan die kelk binnegedring is.
Toekomstige navorsing sal gefokus moet word op die lewenssiklus in die veld, vir die verskillende vrugsoorte. Daar sal ook gekyk moet word na die spesifieke alternatiewe gashere of plekke waar die VKM kan oorwinter sodat beheer meer voorkomend plaas kan vind. Dit sal infestasie vlakke onderdruk, om veral laer druk tydens oesperiodes te verseker. Dit is uiters belangrik om beheer stategieë te kombineer met die hoeveelheid druk vanaf uitvoermarkte oor maksimum residu vlakke van chemiese middels.

Towards common ground : sustainable development in Southeast False CreekIrwin, John Jacob Michael 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis focuses on communicative participation processes and the mutual
understanding that can occur amongst participants. This mutual understanding can often
lead to better sustainability planning outcomes. It analyzes both the process and the
outcomes of the process through a case study. The principle research question addressed
is: does communicative participation in development processes, by a broad range of
interests, contribute to social, environmental, and economic sustainability?
The research instruments include: action research conducted by the author in the
Southeast False Creek Model Sustainable Community Planning Process case study,
which took place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; twenty qualitative interviews
with the members of a policy Advisory Group, staff of the local civic government, and
political representatives; and analysis of the key planning documents generated by the
process and other contextual documentation. The findings from the action research are
presented, followed by the qualitative interview findings. These two types of results
(which were conducted independently of each other) were then compared, analyzed, and
contrasted with the literature in an iterative manner.
The literature consulted includes: communicative action, communicative action in
planning, public participation, sustainable development and sustainable urban
development (ecological, social, and economic). Two sets of criteria, one for the process
and the other for the outcome, were derived from the literature review.
The research findings indicate that this case study is an example of a reasonably good
communicative participation process that was deep and long-term, but did not involve the
broader community as well as it could have. The analysis concludes, however, that power
played a significant role in this case study. This highlights the need for communicative
action theory in planning to be supplemented, extended, and revised. Communicative
action theory could be strengthened by being supplemented by political economic theory,
progressive planning theory, mobilization theory, and postmodern trans-cultural planning
theory.
The process outcome, the policy for Southeast False Creek, was found to make
marked progress towards ecological sustainability, and marginal movement towards
economic sustainability. The policy was found to be quite lacking in terms of social
sustainability, although it was given more consideration than in previous development
policy in Vancouver. A lack of focus on social sustainability was found in the process,
and this was reflected in the policy. Although the sustainability policy was found to be
quite weak overall, it did lead towards greater sustainable urban development in
Vancouver, and increased awareness about sustainability in the development policy
community.
This thesis makes a significant contribution to communicative action theory by
analyzing a case study that put this theory into practice. It may also improve planning
