Caractérisation structurale et géothermométrie de la suite anorthositique de Vallant, Côte-Nord, Québec

Les roches anorthositiques sont représentatives du Mésoprotérozoïque, puisque c'est le seul moment dans l'histoire de la Terre où on en retrouve en aussi grande quantité, principalement dans la Province de Grenville. La Suite anorthositique de Vallant (1148 Ma) se situe au nord de la ville de Baie-Comeau, sur la Côte-Nord du Québec. L'objectif de ce travail est de caractériser sa relation avec les roches qui lui sont adjacentes, en contexte de compression grenvillienne. Pour ce faire, une pétrographie détaillée, une description texturale, une analyse structurale, ainsi que de la géothermométrie ont été produites. Le contact nord de la Suite anorthositique de Vallant, avec le Complexe de Baie-Comeau présente des foliations principalement orientées est-ouest, dans le sens du contact et des linéations de type pendage. Les températures obtenues par le géothermomètre amphibole plagioclase se situent généralement entre 700°C et 800°C. On retrouve des évidences de fusion partielle au sein du Complexe de Baie-Comeau qui peuvent s'expliquer par l'empilement tectonique issu du chevauchement de la Suite anorthositique de Vallant sur ce dernier, avec un mouvement vers le nord. Au sud, la Suite anorthositique de Vallant est en contact avec la Suite plutonique de Varin. Les foliations sont aussi orientées grossièrement est-ouest à ENE-OSO, avec des linéations d'orientation moins bien définie qu'au niveau du contact nord, mais plusieurs sont de type pendage. Les températures obtenues à l'aide du géothermomètre amphibole plagioclase, de l'ordre de 850°C à 900°C, sont probablement magmatiques et représentatives de l'intrusion de la Suite plutonique de Varin dans la Suite anorthositique de Vallant, alors que les températures grenat-biotite sont métamorphiques et plutôt de l'ordre de 550°C à 625°C. Par ailleurs, la déformation locale de la Suite plutonique de Varin ainsi que l'apparition de fenêtres pinwariennes au contact suggère une exhumation tardi-grenvillienne par le coulissement en faille normale de la Suite anorthositique de Vallant vers le nord. ______________________________________________________________________________ MOTS-CLÉS DE L’AUTEUR : Province de Grenville, Moyenne Côte-Nord, mass ifs anorthositiques, géothermométrie

Fallstudie för distribuerad installation av operativsystem

<p>Rapporten undersöker om det är möjligt att använda Clonezilla för distribuerad installation av Windows Vista som alternativ till Symantec Ghost. Ett ytterligare krav är att installationen ska vara automatiserad och inte kräva något extra arbete efter installationens slut. Dessutom ska datorerna vara redo att användas i en Windows-domän efter en färdig installation.</p><p>Programmet Clonezilla är av typen open source och är fritt att använda medan Symantec Ghost är en kommersiell produkt som kräver flertalet licenser beroende på antalet datorer. Clonezilla körs i Linux och saknar grafiskt gränssnitt, Symantec däremot har ett eget gränssnitt för att överskådligt hantera datorer och distribuera operativsystem i välkänd Windows-miljö. Båda lösningarna testas under flera praktiska experiment i labbmiljö. De två programmen jämförs och utvärderas gällande prestanda och användarvänlighet.  Resultaten visar på att skillnaden gällande prestanda är marginell. Gällande användarvänlighet är skillnaden för de båda programmen större då Symantec erbjuder ett grafiskt gränssnitt tillsammans med hjälpavsnitt för produkten. Båda lösningarna fungerar för ändamålet och har olika fördelar respektive nackdelar.</p>

As in-suite heat recovery ventilator (HRV) use increases, cases of cross-contamination and odour transmission in MURBs are beginning to appear. To mitigate these issues and maximize HRV benefits, a better design and construction methodology specific to MURBs is required. Previously conducted condition surveys suggest the possibility of the fresh air supply becoming contaminated by the exhaust air stream from adjacent units. It is suggested that the intake and exhaust configuration has a significant influence on the potential for cross contamination. The results show cross contamination is an issue in high-rise condominiums. With a low exhaust vent angle and the right wind direction and speed, contaminants can travel from an exhaust source to a fresh air supply in a significant quantity. The potential impact here is to protect the health and safety of all home owners living in high-rise condominiums that utilize in-suite ventilation systems.

RNA Backbone Validation, Correction, and Implications for RNA-Protein Interfaces

<p>RNA is the molecular workhorse of nature, capable of doing many cellular tasks, from genetic data storage and regulation, to enzymatic synthesis--even to the point of self-catalyzing its own replication. While RNA can act as a catalyst on its own, as in the hammerhead ribozyme, the added efficiency of proteins is often a necessity; the ribosome--the large ribozyme responsible for peptide chain formation, is aided by proteins which ensure correct assembly and structural stability. These complexes of RNA and proteins feature in many essential cellular processes, including the RISC silencing complex and in the spliceosome. Despite its enormous utility, structural determination of RNA is notoriously difficult--particularly in the backbone, since a nucleotide standardly has 12 torsion angles (including &#967;) and 12 non-hydrogen atoms, compared to 4 torsions (including &#967;1) and 4 non-H atoms in a typical amino acid. The abundance of backbone atoms, their conformational flexibility, and experimental resolution limitations often result in systematic errors that can have a significant impact on the interpretation. False trails due to structural errors can lead to significant loss of time and effort, especially with such high-profile complexes as the ribosome and the RISC complex. </p><p>My research has focused on harnessing the recently discovered ribosome structures and the Richardsons' RNA dataset to find trends in RNA backbone conformations and motifs that were then used to develop structural validation techniques and provide improved diagnosis and correction techniques for RNA backbone. Methods for fixing RNA structure have been developed for both NMR and X-ray crystallography. For NMR structures, a method for assigning RNA backbone structure based on NOE data was developed, leading to improved identification and building of RNA backbone conformation in NMR ensembles. For crystallography, our method of diagnosing the correct ribose pucker from clear observables allows reliable assessment of pucker in validation or refinement. Observed differences in bond-lengths, bond-angles, and dihedrals have been categorized by sugar pucker in the PHENIX refinement package. I have shown that this improves the refinement behavior of both pucker and geometry. </p><p>There have also been improvements in identifying structural motifs. Many previously identified structural motifs have now been defined in terms of backbone suitestrings, a series of 2-character code divisions of RNA backbone that show the best clustering of dihedral angle correlations. Combined with a BLAST-like alignment program called SuiteAlign, these suitestrings were quickly and easily identified in a number of structures, eventually leading to the discovery of multiple instances of T&#968;C-loop structures in the ribosome.</p><p>To facilitate error diagnosis and corrections in RNA-protein complexes, as well as to expand the knowledge base of the scientific community as a whole, a database of RNA-protein interaction motifs has been developed. This database is rooted in the quality-filtering, visualization, and analysis techniques of the Richardson lab, particularly those developed by Laura Murray specifically for RNA structures.</p><p>The consensus backbone conformers, pucker diagnosis, and all-atom contacts have been combined to develop first manual and then automated tools for RNA structure correction. I have applied all these techniques to improve the accuracy of a number of important RNA and RNA/protein complex structures.</p> / Dissertation

Working as a coordinator midwife in a tertiary hospital delivery suite: a phenomenological study

This phenomenological study has been conducted to reveal midwives’ experiences working as coordinator/charge midwives in tertiary hospital delivery suite settings. The methodology is informed by Heidegger’s interpretive phenomenological, hermeneutic philosophy (1927/1962). Data analysis is based on van Manen’s (1990) research methodology. Five coordinator/charge midwives who work at three tertiary hospitals were interviewed. These interviews were tape recorded, transcribed and analyzed to uncover commonality of themes which revealed what it felt like ‘being’ a coordinator/charge midwife. The three themes which emerged and are discussed in the data analysis chapters are: “The performing art of leadership”, “Time as lived” and “In the face of the ‘known’ and the ‘unknown’”. The findings of this study reveal coordinators are the ‘hub’ or the ‘pivot’ at their workplace with their art and soul of midwifery at the very core of their ‘being’. They ‘know’ the unpredictability of childbirth and are regularly challenged by ‘lived time’ as they ‘leap in’ to situations and ‘leap ahead’. Their ability to facilitate teamwork and their resilience in the face, at times, of seemingly insurmountable obstacles shines through.

Thus, we have taken the book Dance and the Music of J.S. Bach, written by Little and Jenne, as theoretical reference in order to establish the importance of the French court dances for the compositional style of J.S. Bach. From this study, we have pointed the main characteristics of the passepied, as well as its compositional structure, for we have found a close relationship between this French court dance and the second section of the Prelude. Thus, the main focus of the research was to define and demonstrate that, although written in the complex structure of a fugue, the second section of the Prelude from 5th Suite is clearly based on a passepied. Thereby establishing new interpretative parameters related to style, tempo and character. Aspects that are certainly relevant to the interpretive approach to the work. At the same time, we have prepared a new edition of the Prelude, for comparative purpose, based on J.S. Bach´s lute transcription and the cello manuscript copy made by Anna Magdalena Bach. Through this comparative analysis, it was possible to emphasize the similarities and discrepancies between the two versions. As a result, we have found new structural elements related to the idiomatic language, which reflects to the general understanding of the work. This study assumes that Bach paradoxically combines the complex structure of the fugue with the simple elements characteristic of the passepied dance. Aspects that reinforce and expand the understanding of the piece, in order to build a new interpretation of the Prelude, based on the stylistic origin under which the fugue was elaborated. / Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo demonstrar a origem estilística do Prelúdio da Suíte Nº 5 para violoncelo solo de J.S. Bach, oferecendo novos elementos e subsídios interpretativos para a obra em questão. Tendo como marco teórico, Dance and the Music of J.S. Bach, de Little e Jenne, procura-se estabelecer a importância das danças da corte francesa dentro do estilo composicional de Bach. A partir deste estudo, destaca-se a dança passepied, quanto às suas características e estrutura composicional, fato este relevante, uma vez que é encontrada estreita relação entre a dança e a segunda seção do Prelúdio. Desta forma, o ponto central da pesquisa foi definir e comprovar que, embora escrita dentro da complexa estrutura de uma fuga, a segunda seção do Prelúdio da 5ª Suíte está claramente baseada em uma passepied. Estabelecendo, assim, novos parâmetros interpretativos relacionados a estilo, andamento e caráter. Aspectos que certamente são relevantes à abordagem interpretativa da obra como um todo. Ao mesmo tempo, foi realizada uma nova edição do Prelúdio para violoncelo, a título de estudo comparativo, a partir da transcrição para alaúde de J.S. Bach e da cópia para violoncelo de Anna Magdalena Bach. Através desta análise foi possível destacar convergências e divergências entre as duas versões, obtendo como resultado a descoberta de novos elementos estruturantes relacionados à linguagem idiomática, com reflexo na compreensão da obra. A pesquisa constata que Bach combina, de maneira paradoxal, a complexa estrutura da fuga com os elementos simples característicos da dança passepied. Aspectos que reforçam e ampliam o entendimento para uma nova construção interpretativa do Prelúdio, a partir da origem estilística sob a qual a fuga foi elaborada.

Esta pesquisa se estabelece a partir de uma análise melódico-estrutural da Suíte para Violoncelo Solo, de Gaspar Cassadó, sob a perspectiva do intérprete, uma vez que a obra está baseada em melodias e ritmos nacionais da Espanha, como também em elementos culturais da região da Catalunha. Novos desafios interpretativos são estabelecidos a partir da determinação de características estilísticas da Suíte, considerando a origem do compositor e suas influências composicionais.

Quantitative Structure Analysis Relationships for Predicting the Fates of Future Contaminants in Indirect Potable Reuse Systems

abstract: The objective of this research was to predict the persistence of potential future contaminants in indirect potable reuse systems. In order to accurately estimate the fates of future contaminants in indirect potable reuse systems, results describing persistence from EPI Suite were modified to include sorption and oxidation. The target future contaminants studied were the approximately 2000 pharmaceuticals currently undergoing testing by United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA). Specific organic substances such as analgesics, antibiotics, and pesticides were used to verify the predicted half-lives by comparing with reported values in the literature. During sub-surface transport, an important component of indirect potable reuse systems, the effects of sorption and oxidation are important mechanisms. These mechanisms are not considered by the quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) model predictions for half-lives from EPI Suite. Modifying the predictions from EPI Suite to include the effects of sorption and oxidation greatly improved the accuracy of predictions in the sub-surface environment. During validation, the error was reduced by over 50% when the predictions were modified to include sorption and oxidation. Molecular weight (MW) is an important criteria for estimating the persistence of chemicals in the sub-surface environment. EPI Suite predicts that high MW compounds are persistent since the QSAR model assumes steric hindrances will prevent transformations. Therefore, results from EPI Suite can be very misleading for high MW compounds. Persistence was affected by the total number of halogen atoms in chemicals more than the sum of N-heterocyclic aromatics in chemicals. Most contaminants (over 90%) were non-persistent in the sub-surface environment suggesting that the target future drugs do not pose a significant risk to potable reuse systems. Another important finding is that the percentage of compounds produced from the biotechnology industry is increasing rapidly and should dominate the future production of pharmaceuticals. In turn, pharmaceuticals should become less persistent in the future. An evaluation of indirect potable reuse systems that use reverse osmosis (RO) for potential rejection of the target contaminants was performed by statistical analysis.
