Innovative solutions for acoustic resonance characterization in metal halide lamps

Lei, Fang 24 January 2018 (has links) (PDF)
Metal halide lamp is one kind of the most compact high-performance light sources. Because of their good color rendering index and high luminous efficacy, these lamps are often preferred in locations where color and efficacy are important, such as supermarkets, gymnasiums, ice rinks and sporting arenas. Unfortunately, acoustic resonance phenomenon occurs in metal halide lamps and causes light flicker, lamp arc bending and rotation, lamp extinction and in the worst case, arc tube explosion, when the lamps are operated in high-frequency bands. This thesis takes place in the context of developing electronic ballasts with robust acoustic resonance detection and avoidance mechanisms. To this end, several envelope detection methods such as the multiplier circuit, rectifier circuit, and lock-in amplifier, are proposed to characterize fluctuations of acoustic resonance. Furthermore, statistical criteria based on the standard deviation of these fluctuations are proposed to assess acoustic resonance occurrence and classify its severity. The proposed criteria enable classifying between no acoustic resonance and acoustic resonance cases based upon either a two-dimensional plane, a histogram or a boxplot. These analyses are confirmed by the study of spectral variations (variations of the spectral irradiance and colorimetric parameters) as well. Standard deviations and relative standard deviations of these variations are also correlated with the presence of acoustic resonance. The results from this study show that whatever voltage envelope variations or spectral variations are significantly influenced by acoustic resonance phenomena. A set of metal halide lamps from different manufacturers and with different powers are tested in our experiments. We concluded that our designed multiplier and rectifier circuits for acoustic resonance detection have the same sensitivity as the lock-in amplifier, paving the way for the implementation of this function directly into the ballast circuit board.

Domestic Lighting of the Future - How interactive lighting for the home can be innovated & utilized

Asveld, Jip January 2018 (has links)
Innovative and interactive lighting has big opportunities to move from the classical switch to more tangible and embodied ways of interaction, types of interaction that have much more richness and expressivity to them. This will not be of any use if the output would still be just an on/off type of lamp; however, new mediums or output in the form of LED light provide much more flexibility in intensity, colour, multiple sources of light (that work together), etc. Therefore they need more rich ways of input than a switch can provide. This richness of and mapping between input and output should be designed in an adequate way, to create a pleasing and meaningful user experience. The knowledge contribution that is expected through this thesis will be specifically aimed at the area where lighting, aesthetics of interaction and tangible & embodied interaction meet. A framework will be developed that can help designers who want to design innovative and interactive lighting for the home environment in the future. The framework can assist with creating an aesthetic interactive experience with lighting in a more tangible or embodied way (than e.g. just pressing a button or rotating a dimmer). The framework will be exemplified by a lighting design prototype that shows how the framework can be used.

Non-OH chemistry in oxidation flow reactors for the study of atmospheric chemistry systematically examined by modeling

Peng, Zhe, Day, Douglas A., Ortega, Amber M., Palm, Brett B., Hu, Weiwei, Stark, Harald, Li, Rui, Tsigaridis, Kostas, Brune, William H., Jimenez, Jose L. 06 April 2016 (has links)
Oxidation flow reactors (OFRs) using low-pressure Hg lamp emission at 185 and 254 nm produce OH radicals efficiently and are widely used in atmospheric chemistry and other fields. However, knowledge of detailed OFR chemistry is limited, allowing speculation in the literature about whether some non-OH reactants, including several not relevant for tropospheric chemistry, may play an important role in these OFRs. These non-OH reactants are UV radiation, O(1D), O(3P), and O3. In this study, we investigate the relative importance of other reactants to OH for the fate of reactant species in OFR under a wide range of conditions via box modeling. The relative importance of non-OH species is less sensitive to UV light intensity than to water vapor mixing ratio (H2O) and external OH reactivity (OHRext), as both non-OH reactants and OH scale roughly proportionally to UV intensity. We show that for field studies in forested regions and also the urban area of Los Angeles, reactants of atmospheric interest are predominantly consumed by OH. We find that O(1D), O(3P), and O3 have relative contributions to volatile organic compound (VOC) consumption that are similar or lower than in the troposphere. The impact of O atoms can be neglected under most conditions in both OFR and troposphere. We define “riskier OFR conditions” as those with either low H2O (< 0.1 %) or high OHRext ( ≥  100 s−1 in OFR185 and > 200 s−1 in OFR254). We strongly suggest avoiding such conditions as the importance of non-OH reactants can be substantial for the most sensitive species, although OH may still dominate under some riskier conditions, depending on the species present. Photolysis at non-tropospheric wavelengths (185 and 254 nm) may play a significant (> 20 %) role in the degradation of some aromatics, as well as some oxidation intermediates, under riskier reactor conditions, if the quantum yields are high. Under riskier conditions, some biogenics can have substantial destructions by O3, similarly to the troposphere. Working under low O2 (volume mixing ratio of 0.002) with the OFR185 mode allows OH to completely dominate over O3 reactions even for the biogenic species most reactive with O3. Non-tropospheric VOC photolysis may have been a problem in some laboratory and source studies, but can be avoided or lessened in future studies by diluting source emissions and working at lower precursor concentrations in laboratory studies and by humidification. Photolysis of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) samples is estimated to be significant (> 20 %) under the upper limit assumption of unity quantum yield at medium (1 × 1013 and 1.5 × 1015 photons cm−2 s−1 at 185 and 254 nm, respectively) or higher UV flux settings. The need for quantum yield measurements of both VOC and SOA photolysis is highlighted in this study. The results of this study allow improved OFR operation and experimental design and also inform the design of future reactors.

Lampy z římských pohřebišť I a II v Gerulatě / Roman Lamps From Cemeteries in Gerulata (Rusoviec)

Frecer, Robert January 2012 (has links)
This catalogue documents Roman lamps from the cemeteries of Gerulata (modern-day Rusovce). It consists of 16 Bildlapmen, 89 Firmalampen, and one special shape. These lamps were found mainly in two large cemeteries, in both cremation and inhumation graves, dated from the last decades of the 1 st century AD to the dawn of the 3rd century. Of the Bildlampen, several lamps with angular voluted nozzles (Loeschcke type I) and one fragment of a circular lamp with a rounded nozzle (Loeschcke type VIII) are represented. Of the Firmalampen, both Loeschcke types IX and X are found, type X and its variations being the most numerous (67 lamps). The iconography of relief decorations shows a range of mythological and profane images. Twenty different makers' stamps in relief are found, two without parallels, with Fortis as most common. The production, transport and copying of Firmalampen is described; resulting endeavors to locate their point of origin are determined to be often unreliable without chemical analysis. Both the relationship of lamps to other grave goods as well as their purpose in graves are assessed; lamps are found to have been an available luxury, as appropriate in a Romanized society. Most lamps had worn bases, and some had blackened wickholes; most are burned by their inclusion in the funeral pyre. The...

Ferreira, Castellane Silva. January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: In this work, the development and implementation of an illumination fluorescent system with automatic management based on electronic ballast applied to multiple fluorescent lamps are presented. This research is directed in the development of the management and supervision of an automatic platform, allowing the control of luminosity, the remote actuation and also the programmable actuation according with the local business work and conditions of natural light of the environment. In addition, the ballast will provide the increase in the average lifetime for fluorescent lamps, considering a proposed protocol to pre-heating and ignition. The automatic actuation of the system is allowed by the coupling, of the luminosity and presence sensors. The control of fluorescent lamps by channel is executed by an ATMEL's AtMega8 microcontroller, which is responsible for the system automation. The management and monitoring platform uses a microcomputer with purpose to execute the implemented application, which will provide a friendly interface to the user. Thus, a protocol of communication was developed to allow a reliable communication of data, providing robustness and high reliability to the control of lighting system. Considering the processing of data acquired, was used a Serial Bus of communication with full duplex standard RS232 and RS485, with asynchronous transmission. Additionally, the system works in the master-slave mode, and the microcomputer is responsible for sending addresses and orders of action to microcontrollers, which identify and address data, in order to perform the programmed action to it, and in order to send data to the microcomputer, when requested by the user.

Study of viability of integration of incandescent micro-lamps with interferometric filters.

Héctor Báez Medina 07 April 2011 (has links)
In the present work was realized a study of the viability of integrating two optical devices: incandescent micro-lamps and interferometric filters with the intention of obtaining a single device with specific characteristics. The fabrication of these optical devices was made using dielectric materials, obtained by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), and using conventional microelectronics techniques developed at this laboratory. Numeric simulations, fabrication process and characterization of each one of the two optical devices as well as the characterization of the obtained integrated optical device are presented. The incandescent microlamps were fabricated from a chromium filament, isolated from the environment by two dielectric silicon oxynitride layers, which is powered electrically with a continuous voltage with the purpose of increasing the temperature of the filament to reach the incandescence. With the purpose of reducing the thermal dissipation in that area, the filament was designed and fabricated to be suspended through a partial anisotropic etch of the silicon substrate. On the other hand, the interferometric filters were fabricated on glass substrates starting from a series of alternate Si3N4 and SiO2 layers deposited by PECVD, with thickness of 240 and 340 nm and refraction indexes of 1.91 and 1.46 respectively, with the purpose of producing light transmittance attenuation peaks in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Filters were fabricated with 9, 11 and 13 layers. The results of this work showed that it is possible to develop the efficient integration of these two optical devices to produce a luminous source that it allows the filtering of a certain range of wavelengths. It was also demonstrated that, the bandwidth as well as the filtering area, can be controlled through the refraction index, thickness and number of constituent layers of the interferometric filter. The results of the numeric simulations showed to be quite coherent with the obtained experimental results.

Research on the Best Market Applications for LightLab Energy-Saving Lamps

Vilalta Cea, Raul January 2010 (has links)
Nowadays, lighting represents 20% of the global electricity consumption. Light can be produced using different technologies but more than 100 years after its invention, the incandescent bulb is still the most sold and one of the more used light sources. Of the total energy input in an incandescent bulb more than 90% is lost as heat while less than 10% is converted into visible light. However, there are alternative technologies which use up to 85% less energy for conventional lighting and there are even more efficient light sources for other purposes that if they replace completely all incandescent lamps over the world could reduce dramatically the global electricity consumption and greenhouse gases emissions. One may identify these alternative technologies mainly as LEDs and discharge lamps, but are they the unique alternatives? This thesis is focused on a new lighting technology whose name is LightLab and which is based on the field emission and cathodoluminescence concepts. This technology is under the research and development stage but prototypes have already achieved energy savings over 85% compared to incandescent lamps with a great color performance and with the advantage that it does not use mercury or other hazardous substances compared with discharge lamps. Thus, in the first part of the project all technologies and last improvements are studied while the second part analyses the market applications possibilities for the LightLab lamp considering the environmental perspective regulations and comparing the lamp with the other light sources. The result is that despite there are still some unknown parameters that need to be developed or improved, the lamp has a great potential for different applications fields.

Ράθωση, Χριστίνα 08 February 2013 (has links)
Petrographic, mineralogical and geochemical research was carried out on Roman ceramic lamps and Hellenistic and Archaic wares derived from excavations in northwestern Peloponnese. The studied sherds of Roman lamps (the late 1st A.D. - until the end of the 3rd - early 4th c. AD.) were collected from three excavations in the city of Patras, two pottery Workshops (A:produced red-painted lamps and B:produced unpainted lamps) and one Lychnomanteion. Until the excavations brought to light the existence of the two lamp Workshops (A and B), it was assumed that the red-painted lamps were imported from Italy and the unpainted lamps were imported from Corinth so as they were called “imported” and “Corinthian” lamps respectively. A deposit of Archaic ceramic sherds, dating from the late 7th - early 6th c. BC and Hellenistic sherds have been unearthed in the excavation of an Hellenistic settlement of Ancient Dyme (3th - 2nd c. BC) in the city of Kato Achaia. These sherds represent individual wares such as: skyphos, pinakio and krateras, and they display typological influence by Corinthian wares. The study of the petrographic, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of ceramic samples allowed us to determine the provenance of the raw materials used by ancient potters for their productions. Also a database is created based on these archaeometric characteristics of ancient fine wares in northwestern Peloponnese. The provenance of raw materials for the production of the Roman lamps and the Archaic and Hellenistic sherds is similar and derived from the local Plio-Pleistocene lagoon and lacustrine sediments of northwestern Peloponnese. Clay samples were collected from the Plio-Pleistocene deposits around the excavations and they were subjected to petrographic, mineralogical and geochemical analyses. The comparison of the results of their analyses with those of ancient ceramics indicated complete similarity. A comparison of the rare earth element and trace elements variation diagrams (spidergrams) between ancient ceramics and clay samples shows that the geochemical patterns of the ancient ceramics are very similar and fit well to the geochemical patterns of the local clay samples. These similarities strongly confirm the above suggestion that the ancient ceramics were produced from clay-rich sedimentary deposits of NW Peloponnese. The firing-temperature which was estimated based on the optical activity of micromass and the new mineral phases crystallized during firing (fassaite, gehlenite, anorthite, sanidine) indicated that for Roman lamps and Archaic and Hellenistic wares, the firing temperature ranged from Τ<700°C to Τ≥1000°C with a prevailing oxidizing atmosphere in the kilns. The potters in Archaic and Hellenistic times paid greater attention to the application of the firing conditions such as temperature, atmosphere and firing time than potters in Roman period. For Roman lamps their raw material does not seem to have been subjected to any initial processes (e.x. levigation, settling, sieving), in contrast the raw materials of the Archaic and Hellenistic sherds could have been subjected to a small refinement. Using local clay material, ceramic bricks produced in the laboratory in order to facilitate through their comparison the ‘identification’ of raw materials and firing conditions of ancient ceramics. The macroscopic, petrographic, mineralogical results of ceramic bricks are similar or identical to those of ancient ceramics. The archaeometric study of Roman ceramic lamps and Hellenistic and Archaic wares from excavations in NW Peloponnese aims to contribute to future comparison such as : 1. Between lamps produced in Patraian workshops with lamps produced in Corinthian, Athenian and Italian workshops in order to determine the provenance of their raw materials and technology. 2. Workshop A and B exported lamps. So the comparison of the archaeometric data of their lamps with the archaeometric data of lamps which have been found or will be found in excavations out of Achaia county, will help to decipher if the latter lamps were produced in Workshops A or B. 3. The Archaic and Hellenistic fine sherds studied here were produced in workshops established in the county of Achaia. The comparison of their archaeometric data with that data of fine wares (same typology and chronology) collected in excavations of other regions may give information about the commercial and financial dealings of the inhabitants of the Achaia county (Ancient Dyme).
