Vector refinable splines and subdivision

Andriamaro, Miangaly Gaelle 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc (Mathematics))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / In this thesis we study a standard example of refinable functions, that is, functions which can be reproduced by the integer shifts of their own dilations. Using the cardinal B-spline as an introductory example, we prove some of its properties, thereby building a basis for a later extension to the vector setting. Defining a subdivision scheme associated to the B-spline refinement mask, we then present the proof of a well-known convergence result. Subdivision is a powerful tool used in computer-aided geometric design (CAGD) for the generation of curves and surfaces. The basic step of a subdivision algorithm consists of starting with a given set of points, called the initial control points, and creating new points as a linear combination of the previous ones, thereby generating new control points. Under certain conditions, repeated applications of this procedure yields a continuous limit curve. One important goal of this thesis is to study a particular extension of scalar subdivision to matrix subdivision ...

Couto, Jeferson Berni January 2009 (has links)
This work describes constructive techniques used in two alternative structures of road surface that replaced original granulated base and subbase pavement by soil-aggregate, while preserving the same thickness and widths of the original designs. The close accompaniment of the constructive processes allowed us to standardize the construction procedures for floor layers in aggregated soil using laterite clay. It also allowed us to record the pavement's initial behavior under real traffic conditions. The study was conducted in an experimental road segment built from km 22+910 to km 23+610 of RS 129 between the villages of Casca and David Canabarro, in the northern region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil. The materials used in the mixture had their physical and mechanical properties analyzed both separately and together using a set field and lab tests. The emphasis was on the triaxial tests to determine the materials' resilience. During the constructive process, all pavement layers were monitored using a falling weight deflectometer, providing feedback for a retro-analysis involving the track and laboratory resilient modules.

Basso, João Arthur January 2008 (has links)
High speed and its variability are considered determining factors in the cause of accidents and its severity. The frequency of accidents decreases when the speed limits established are appropriate or realistic. The limit must be established in accordance with the speeds practiced by the average conservative drivers, or this limit will not be considered. In the present study a method is developed to establish basic speed limits for two-lane highways of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The method relies on the operational speed of the track and its degrees of mobility and accessibility, suggesting one speed limit for both ways of the road. It is also suggested warning speeds for curves in the horizontal alignment. Six two-lane highways of the state of Rio Grande do Sul were selected for a case study. The selection was made so all classes of project and different regions were included, in a way that analysis of different projects could be done. The two-lane highways have their limits of speed calculated, from their operating speeds and geometry data. Next, the warning speeds are calculated. The results are presented in the form of graphs to facilitate the understanding of the distribution of velocities along the length of the segment. The results of each different segment are analyzed and compared.

Córdova Junior, Ramiro Sebastião January 2016 (has links)
This study has as main objective compare the perceptions of influence on the safety of cyclists with the perception of importance attributed by the managing agency to the road safety factors in the provision of cycle lanes in the city of Porto Alegre. This study proposes: (i) identify in the international literature the State of the Art in relation to road safety discussions for cyclists; (ii) identify between the traffic system actors in Porto Alegre which are main road safety factors for cyclists; (iii) analyze the influence of cycling safety factors in cycle lanes based on the perception of cyclists using cycle lanes; (iv) analyze the importance attributed by managing agency to the cycling safety factors in the provision of cycle lanes; e (v) identify gaps between the perception of influence on cycling safety performance (view of cyclists) with the importance given by managing agency in the provision of cycle lanes (view of managing agency). Based on the survey of factors related to cycling safety context for cycle lanes, a survey was conducted with cyclists and managers requesting the hierarchization of cycling safety attributes. From these perceptions was possible to create a chart that relates the influence on safety performance with the importance attributed to safety attributes that identifies more clearly the discrepancies and the alignments between perceptions. The results indicate improvement opportunities in cycling security attributes management in cycle lanes, and suggest that the managing agency may be prioritizing attributes that do not influence the safety performance in view of cyclists.

Contribution to evidential models for perception grids : application to intelligent vehicle navigation / Contribution aux modèles évidentiels pour les grilles de perception : application à la navigation des véhicules intelligents

Yu, Chunlei 15 September 2016 (has links)
For intelligent vehicle applications, a perception system is a key component to characterize in real-time a model of the driving environment at the surrounding of the vehicle. When modeling the environment, obstacle information is the first feature that has to be managed since collisions can be fatal for the other road users or for the passengers on-board the considered vehicle. Characterization of occupation space is therefore crucial but not sufficient for autonomous vehicles since the control system needs to find the navigable space for safe trajectory planning. Indeed, in order to run on public roads with other users, the vehicle needs to follow the traffic rules which are, for instance, described by markings painted on the carriageway. In this work, we focus on an ego-centered grid-based approach to model the environment. The objective is to include in a unified world model obstacle information with semantic road rules. To model obstacle information, occupancy is handled by interpreting the information of different sensors into the values of the cells. To model the semantic of the navigable space, we propose to introduce the notion of lane grids which consist in integrating semantic lane information into the cells of the grid. The combination of these two levels of information gives a refined environment model. When interpreting sensor data into obstacle information, uncertainty inevitably arises from ignorance and errors. Ignorance is due to the perception of new areas and errors come from noisy measurements and imprecise pose estimation. In this research, the belief function theory is adopted to deal with uncertainties and we propose evidential models for different kind of sensors like lidars and cameras. Lane grids contain semantic lane information coming from lane marking information for instance. To this end, we propose to use a prior map which contains detailed road information including road orientation and lane markings. This information is extracted from the map by using a pose estimate provided by a localization system. In the proposed model, we integrate lane information into the grids by taking into account the uncertainty of the estimated pose. The proposed algorithms have been implemented and tested on real data acquired on public roads. We have developed algorithms in Matlab and C++ using the PACPUS software framework developed at the laboratory.
