The development of a school readiness test for use with pre-school children in the Lebanon

This study aimed at developing a Lebanese preschool instrument, a Lebanese preschool readiness test that can reliably, accurately, and rapidly identify children who are ready for preschool. Collecting norms and establishing the psychometric properties of the instrument was another major function of this study. To fulfil these functions a thorough review of the literature on preschool screening, preschool instruments, preschool child, and early childhood education was presented. In addition, interviews were conducted with a representative sample of preschool teachers and coordinators in Lebanon, and a clear definition of abilities that need to be assessed before admission was reached. Based on this needs assessment, test specifications were laid down, items were constructed, materials prepared, and directions for administration and scoring were written. The initial version of the test was piloted on a sample of 50 Lebanese children of both sexes aged 2.6 to 5.0. Based on the results of the pilot survey, test items were analyzed, and subsequently some items were revised. The final version of the test appeared with 122 items divided into four major scales: Motor, Memory, Concept, and Language. The test was then normed on a sample of 250 Lebanese children aged 2.6 - 5.0 enrolled (or applying) to large institutions repre~entative of preschool population in Beirut and reflecting three socioeconomic levels (i.e. high, middle, and low). Norms were reported in the form of standardized scores and percentiles. T. and F. tests revealed that the subjects' means significantly varied by age, but that no significant sex differences were noted on the major scales (M, Me, L, & C), but that significant socio-economic differences were noted on the Language scale. The reliability of the instrument was assessed by computing its alpha coefficient, and the obtained r (0.90) spoke well for the internal stability of the LPRT. Finally, the criterion validity of the LPRT was established by correlating subjects' scores with end of the year teacher ratings, and with their score on another preschool screening instrument, the DIAL R. In addition, and concurrent with the development of the test, other validity questions (content, construct) were also answered.

Il lavoro di ricerca s'è occupato di indagare il rapporto tra Giuseppe Ungaretti e il mondo anglosassone, rapporto, sinora, relativamente inesplorato da parte della critica letteraria, soffermandosi, particolarmente, sulle traduzioni dall'inglese del poeta italiano. Apre una breve introduzione riguardo le motivazioni principali che hanno portato il poeta italiano ad interessarsi alla cultura anglosassone. Segue il nucleo della tesi, costituito dall'analisi delle versioni ungarettiane dei 40 Sonetti di Shakespeare e di numerosi testi blakiani, raccolti nel volume Visioni; ad essa s'aggiunge quella, più marginale, relativa alle traduzioni da altri due autori anglofoni, Joyce e Pound. L'indagine condotta ha portato alla luce una dipendenza intrinseca tra i poeti inglesi, in special modo Blake e Shakespeare, e Ungaretti, che si struttura in base a consonanze tematiche, ma, anche, a livello testuale e lessicale. / This research work is an inquiry about the relationship between Giuseppe Ungaretti and Anglo-Saxon world, a relationship partially unexplored by literary criticism till now. A particular interest is given to Ungaretti's translation of English poems. First of all there's a presentation of the main reasons that led the Italian poet to take an interest in Anglo-Saxon culture. The core of the thesis is represented by the analysis of Ungaretti's versions of 40 Sonnets by Shakespeare and of many poems by Blake, collected in Visioni; then follows a study, even if less important, of the translations from other two Anglophone poets, Joyce and Pound. This enquiry shows an intrinsic dependence between English poets, above all Shakespeare and Blake, and Ungaretti; this dependence is structured through thematic affinities, but it's present, also, at a textual and lexical level.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This work aims to study the functioning of discursive memory, language and fronteira enunciativa memory in statements of descendants of Italian immigrants. Such statements were retrieved from texts of interviews with five descendents who live in the city Ivorá, Fourth Colony of Italian immigration. For this research, we firstly considered a few aspects of historiographical discourse that refer to the immigration process in Brazil, with emphasis on Italian immigration, and we also pointed out the main causes and consequences of that event to the economic and cultural field of this country. Secondly, we considered the linguistic policies of the Estado Novo as well as the prohibition imposed on the languages of immigration through the nationalization of education. We analyzed some of decree-laws that were prevalent during this period in order to observe how the state interfered in the functioning of Italian language in immigrant colonies, which resulted from this interference. The third stage of this work is characterized by a theoretical review of authors who deal with issues regarding enunciation. We also examined the functioning of the fronteira linguística in enunciative sequences of descendants of Italian immigrants and how they distribute the languages they speak because they are affected by the place of enunciation. The last part of this work is devoted to analytical exercise, at which we analyzed the functioning of discursive memory, language and fronteira enunciativa memory, from a theoretical description of the Semantics of Enunciation. We observed that descendant of Italian immigrants, at predicating on (Italian and Portuguese) language(s), means, in its enunciation, a (political) conflict by the unequal distribution which makes these languages in place of saying. In certain circumstances at enunciating, this political and historical subject establishes a fronteira enunciativa, which means, by the discursive memory and by the language memory, places where it can and should say in each language (Italian and Portuguese). / Este trabalho tem como objeto de estudo o funcionamento da memória discursiva, da memória da língua e da fronteira enunciativa em enunciados de sujeitos descendentes de imigrantes italianos. Tais enunciados foram recortados de textos de entrevistas realizadas com cinco descendentes, que vivem no município de Ivorá, Quarta Colônia de Imigração italiana. Para a realização desta pesquisa, consideramos, primeiramente, alguns aspectos do discurso historiográfico que remetem ao processo imigratório no Brasil, com ênfase na imigração italiana, e apontamos as principais causas e consequências desse acontecimento para o campo econômico e cultural do país. Num segundo momento consideramos as políticas linguísticas do Estado Novo bem como a interdição imposta às línguas de imigração através da nacionalização do ensino. Realizamos a análise de alguns decretos-leis que vigoraram neste período a fim de observar como o Estado interferiu no funcionamento da língua italiana nas colônias de imigrantes e o que resultou dessa interferência. O terceiro momento do trabalho se caracteriza por uma revisão teórica de autores que tratam de questões relativas à enunciação. Também analisamos o funcionamento da fronteira linguística em sequências enunciativas de sujeitos descendentes de imigrantes italianos e como eles distribuem as línguas que falam por estarem afetados pelo espaço de enunciação. A última parte deste trabalho é dedicada ao exercício analítico, momento no qual analisamos o funcionamento da memória discursiva, da memória da língua e da fronteira enunciativa, a partir de uma inscrição teórica na Semântica da Enunciação. Observamos que o sujeito descendente de imigrantes italianos, ao predicar sobre a(s) língua(s) (italiana e portuguesa), significa na sua enunciação o conflito (político) pela distribuição desigual que faz dessas línguas nos espaços do dizer. Este sujeito político e histórico, em determinadas circunstâncias, ao enunciar instaura uma fronteira enunciativa, que significa, pela memória discursiva e pela memória da língua, os lugares em que ele pode e deve dizer em cada língua (italiana e portuguesa).

This work aims, in a rather contemplative manner phased into three related parts, to discuss two concepts indispensable for Hegel's entire philosophy of life and history: language and memory. In Part I, I examine the triple relation between language and thinking, thinking and reality, and reality and language. I argue that language shares a logical structure with thinking and reality, and is itself the performative principle (or acteur) of creating reality, being itself the externalizing tool of the movement of thinking without which any development of the Spirit would not be possible. Part II targets the concept of memory and its function within thinking and action of self-consciousness. It is argued that Hegel's language functions as the modern concept of discourse in terms of its agency in reality. Memory is understood as fundamentally entangled with matter, or the material objectivity that calls in memory to be named, i.e. posited in language. Memory is an interiorizing principle, language is the exteriorizing principle, both deeply rooted in the so-called night of the self of each spirit.
