The significance of english for specific purposes approach for first year law degree students at the University of Limpopo

Moremi, Katlego Tennic January 2021 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. (English Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / The purpose of this study was to investigate the significance of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) approach for the first year Law Degree students at the University of Limpopo. Qualitative, ethnographic research was conducted to determine the views and perceptions of the participants. Data was collected through interviews and questionnaires with a selected sample of respondents, and the data was analysed using thematic analysis. Themes were generated to present the data based on the objectives of the study, which were aligned to the literature review. The study has highlighted how the ESP approach could be used in the existing English module drawing from the participants’ conceptions. The findings revealed that even though the English module is considered important in the law degree by students and lecturers, the content of the module should be designed in a manner that fits the Law field. The study recommends that relevant content be designed to develop essential skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking and the module content should be designed with the specific content that fits the law degree.

No. of bitstreams: 1 6403.pdf: 90396021 bytes, checksum: 72aaba8201681f450ebf9e61f4ebd760 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-08-27 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / This dissertation aims to demonstrate the steps and missteps in legal education in law courses in the state of São Paulo based on the analysis of Curriculum Guidelines and Political Pedagogical Projects (PPPs) and of their effectiveness in courses, through sampling. At this study s core is the concept that, at the level of discourse, the guidelines and PPPs are well developed and have content and methodology in accordance with the most recent findings in educational science. However, results have demonstrated the divergence between theory and practice. Taking into account that the state of São Paulo offers 220 of the nearly 1300 law degree programs available in Brazil, an analysis is performed of their necessity when less than half of college-aged Brazilians are enrolled in degree programs, a figure promised by the National Education Plan and the debate over inclusion with quality vs. exclusion. This analysis is done through a reading of the PPPs available at the Legal Education Commission of the Brazilian Lawyer s Order in São Paulo, which enabled an evaluation of the courses from 2010 to 2012, as well as interviews with members of the Commission. The present dissertation also draws from a thorough review of all law degree programs in the state of São Paulo, and their data was processed so as to be able to be accessed, altered and completed, thereby assisting researchers and the research group Education and Law in Contemporary Brazilian Society UFSCar, of which I am a member.
