The effects of relaxation training and verbal suggestion phrases on auditory attention for high risk academic students / Relaxation training and verbal suggestion phrases

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of relaxation train and verbal suggestion phrases upon auditory attention of high risk academic students. The population consisted of one hundred eight freshmen entering the Ball State University Academic Opportunity Program.Subjects were randomly assigned to four treatment conditions. Condition one received relaxation training, condition two received relaxation training plus verbal suggestion phrases, condition three received verbal suggestion phrases, and condition four was the control condition. All subjects were post tested. Data were analyzed by a one-way ANOVA and a post-hoc Scheffe test. Six null hypotheses were tested. The .05 level of significance was established as the critical probability level for non-acceptance of hypotheses.Findings1. Subjects who received relaxation training plus verbal suggestion phrases had higher auditory attention levels than those who received relaxation training only.2. Subjects who received verbal suggestion phrases only had higher levels of auditory attention than those who received relaxation training plus verbal suggestion phrases.3. Subjects who received relaxation training plus verbal sugtion phrases had higher levels of auditory attention than those in the control condition.4. Subjects who received verbal suggestion phrases only had higher levels of auditory attention than those who received relaxation training only.5. Subjects who received relaxation training only did not show any differences in levels of auditory attention from those in the control condition.6. Subjects who received verbal suggestion phrases only had higher levels of auditory attention than those in the control condition.ConclusionsThe findings of this study support the effectiveness of the use of verbal suggestion phrase5to enhance auditory attention. They do not support the contention of the large body of research that implies that relaxation training is the most effective method of enhancing auditory attention. Recommendations include the need for replication to further substantiate these findings.

Developing teaching and learning skills at a Higher education institution: a collaborative action research study

The thesis which was originally undertaken to improve my teaching skills and determine ways of allowing me space to live my academic values also turned out to become the enquiry to investigate students’ learning and study skills. Students and I collaborated in a year-long self-study action research where we were trying different teaching-learning strategies in order to improve our practice(s). Throughout the study I kept a reflective journal and students also reflected in a portfolio of learning their impressions about the new teaching-learning strategies. In addition to these data gathering methods data from students were gathered using chats, observation, and open-ended questionnaire. Data was analysed using a narrative method, reflexivity principle, and grounded theory. There are two major steps I followed in this study which are aimed at improving students’ basic study and learning skills, and my teaching skills. The first relates to action research into student learning at the school of Mathematics Science and Technology (MSTE) at a rural university. The study reveals that: Students have their own different and unique styles of learning, implementing various learning styles afford students an opportunity to find a style that matches their own. The second action step relates to my own self-study research trying different teaching methods based on my academic and personal values. Here, the study reveals that: The best teaching-learning practice is the one developed and agreed upon between the teacher educator and his or her students. These ‘action’ steps were not mutually exclusive – they were conducted in parallel. After the description of developing student learning skills at undergraduate level my reflections on the study followed in relation to theories and methods of teaching-learning and further revealed that what works with one group of students will not necessarily work with another group. The best teacher educator is constantly seeking ways of improving the learning experience of his or her students. The recommendations that teacher educators should become self reflective practitioners and improve their professions using self-study collaborative approach will benefit other teacher educators who are keen to study and improve their practice.

Youth Voices of Bounty and Opportunity: High School Students' Experiences With Food and Community

Currently, garden-based research does not include input from young adults about their experiences and perspectives as individuals in garden-based programs, specifically those that address issues of food and community. To address this void, this qualitative research examines youth perspectives and engagement in garden-based community projects in Olympia, Washington, and Medford, Oregon. The sample of 11 students was chosen from these projects that use food as a means to engage the community and educate underprivileged young adults about local food systems. The main question that the research addresses is: Why, and in what ways, are young adults appropriate agents for community revitalizing garden-based projects? Using open-ended interviews, field notes and observations, the research draws upon theories of food access, community development, social and environmental justice, and nontraditional education. The findings suggest that when young adults are involved in garden-based community projects, they are learning life skills, developing leadership, engaging in models of nontraditional education, and retaining perspectives of grass-roots community development. It is evident from the research and emerging themes that young adults desire to accept responsibility in their community. It is time to harness young people's energy, care, compassion, and dedication so that they can act as ambassadors to dispel the class-based ideologies of the current food systems, empowering underserved communities and celebrating youth's perspectives on food and place.

Transforming the Soul of Education: Sustainability at the Center of Teaching and Learning in Secondary Schools

Humanity is facing problems on a scale never before encountered. This dissertation traces the roots of modern culture's destructive relationship to the planet with its habits of over-consumption and exceeding the limits of the planet's ecological systems. Educational institutions are embedded in and replicate an unsustainable culture. As educational leaders, we need to challenge a system that is morally and ecologically bankrupt while providing a path toward sustainability at the center of teaching and learning. Using a narrative scholarship approach and theoretical frameworks drawn from ecological thinking and place-based learning, this dissertation provides models for transforming secondary education. While critiquing the current model of high school, this dissertation argues that education for sustainability needs to be not only about curriculum change, but a change in the way we think about schooling, the buildings in which we educate, the food we provide and the relationships between schools and the communities in which they exist. It directly addresses social studies curriculum and offers a way of examining career pathways through the lens of education for sustainability.

Giving Voice to the Peace and Justice Challenger Intellectuals: Counterpublic Development as Civic Engagement

"Let knowledge serve the city" reads the golden letters on a pedestrian bridge just 200 feet from my faculty office in Neuberger Hall at Portland State University. Public peace scholarship might allow knowledge to help the polis by keeping it out of war via changing the national discourse toward a strong and informed peace analysis. Educators have an uneasy relationship to public scholarship and mainstream media have a nervous attitude toward public peace intellectuals. Institutions of higher learning are also often either unaware or uncomfortable with a public promotion of a positive peace platform. Academic writing and research is hard to translate into publicly accessible knowledge and time constraints mitigate professorial efforts at such civic engagements. This dissertation looks at the evolving nature of this intersectionality between and among factors and analyzes data derived from research interviews conducted with 12 academics/activists. The conclusion is a grounded theory generated by this process. Key findings include problematic lack of academic freedoms--especially in the promotion and tenure context, overwhelming faculty workloads, infrequent faculty development of public scholarship skills and a spotty distribution/connection system that often fails to facilitate competent and willing faculty to engage as public peace and justice scholars. Policy recommendations attempt to address all these obstacles.

An examination of how middle school science teachers conduct collaborative inquiry and reflection about students’ conceptual understanding

This qualitative case study examined how middle school science teachers conducted collaborative inquiry and reflection about students’ conceptual understanding, and how individual teachers in the middle school science group acted and made reflections in response to their collaborative inquiry. It also examined external influences that affected the teachers’ ability to engage in collaborative inquiry. Observational, written, and interview data were collected from observations of teachers’ face-to-face meetings and reflections, individual interviews, a focus group interview, and online reflections. The results of this study revealed that collaborative inquiry is a form of professional development that includes answering curricular questions through observation, communication, action, and reflection. This approach was developed and implemented by middle school science teachers. The premise of an inquiry is based on a need with students. Middle school science teachers came to consensus about actions to affect students’ conceptual understanding, took action as stated, and shared their reflections of the actions taken with consideration to current and upcoming school activities. Activities involved teachers brainstorming and sharing with one another, talking about how the variables were merged into their curriculum, and how they impacted students’ conceptual understanding. Teachers valued talking with one another about science content and pedagogy, but did find the inquiry portion of the approach to require more development. The greatest challenge to conducting collaborative inquiry and reflection was embedding teacher inquiry within a prescribed inquiry that was already being conducted by the Sundown School District. Collaborative inquiry should be structured so that it meets the needs of teachers in order to attend to the needs of students. A conducive atmosphere for collaborative inquiry and reflection is one in which administrators make the process mandatory and facilitate the process by removing an existing inquiry. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2013.

Patterns in Nature Forming Patterns in Minds : An Evaluation of an Introductory Physics Unit

Educators are increasingly focused on the process over the content. In science especially, teachers want students to understand the nature of science and investigation. The emergence of scientific inquiry and engineering design teaching methods have led to the development of new teaching and evaluation methods that concentrate on steps in a process rather than facts in a topic. Research supports the notion that an explicit focus on the scientific process can lead to student science knowledge gains. In response to new research and standards many teachers have been developing teaching methods that seem to work well in their classrooms, but lack the time and resources to test them in other classroom environments. A high school Physics teacher (Bradford Hill) has developed a unit called Patterns in Nature (PIN) with objectives relating mathematical modeling to the scientific process. Designed for use in his large public school classroom, the unit was taken and used in a charter school with small classes. This study looks at specifically whether or not the PIN unit effectively teaches students how to graph the data they gather and fit an appropriate mathematical pattern, using that model to predict future measurements. Additionally, the study looks at the students' knowledge and views about the nature of science and the process of scientific investigation as it is affected by the PIN unit. Findings show that students are able to identify and apply patterns to data, but have difficulties explaining the meaning of the math. Students' show increases in their knowledge of the process of science, and the majority develop positive views about science in general. A major goal of this study is to place this unit in the cyclical process of Design-Based Research and allow for Pattern in Nature's continuous improvement, development and evaluation. Design-Based Research (DBR) is an approach that can be applied to the implementation and evaluation of classroom materials. This method incorporates the complexities of different contexts and changing treatments into the research methods and analysis. From the use of DBR teachers can understand more about how the designed materials affect the students. Others may be able to use the development and analysis of PIN study as a guide to look at similar aspects of science units developed elsewhere.
