Adolescents’ perceptions of the onset of their cigarette smoking behaviour and the factors that maintain their habit

Magister Psychologiae - MPsych / Tobacco smoking remains the largest preventable behavioural cause of chronic disease and premature death. Many people continue to engage in this behaviour, despite the well-known negative health consequences. The most common form of smoking is cigarette smoking, which is a type of risk-taking behaviour that is becoming increasingly prevalent among adolescents. Cigarette consumption rates are increasing among adolescents in various parts of the world; each year nearly a million adolescents start to smoke. This behaviour, if continued into adulthood, may lead to a range of debilitating diseases of lifestyle. In an effort to contribute to the success of adolescent smoking cessation programmes in South Africa, this study looks at the factors that motivate and support adolescents‘ decision to start and continue with their cigarette smoking behaviour. Utilising a qualitative framework, individual interviews were carried out with six boys and six girls from an English-medium high school within Cape Town. The participants‘ ages ranged from 16-18 years. Through the use of thematic analysis, the results show that adolescents smoking are not determined by knowledge, beliefs and attitudes alone, but by social and environmental influences as well. Risk and protective factors for adolescent smoking was identified on a psychological, physical, social/environmental level cross-cuttingly on the different stages of the smoking cycle. Of importance was the adolescents‘ common misinterpretation of 'smoking out of habit‘ for 'addiction‘. Essentially, this study focused on the importance of adolescent health and how it is affected by factors associated with tobacco use in South Africa. Therefore, a key recommendation of this study would be for these underlying risk and protective factors needs to be integrated to strengthen current smoking cessation programmes.

The impact of the interactivity of Web 2.0 technologies on the learning experience of students in higher education

The use of Web 2.0 technologies in the field of learning is on the rise, yet there have been a limited number of studies of the impact of Web 2.0 technologies on learning. By their nature, Web 2.0 technologies increase the interactivity between users. Interactivity is considered to be a key to success in traditional classrooms. The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether the interactivity of Web 2.0 technologies has an impact on the learning experience of students. The thesis investigated the use of Web Polls to provide interactivity inside the classroom and the use of Twitter to provide interactivity outside the classroom. Four studies were conducted, two involving Web Polls and two involving Twitter. Mixtures of methods such as qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed in the studies in order to triangulate the data, and the data from participants were collected via questionnaires and interviews. The primary purpose of employing triangulation techniques is to have more explanation and more understanding of the student behaviour from different points of view. The responses to the four studies revealed that the use of interactivity of Web 2.0 technologies were more positive than neutral about the learning experience of students. Across these field studies, the interactivity inside the classroom had a greater effect on the learning experience of students. Overall, the research revealed that the perception of using interactivity of Web 2.0 technologies inside and outside the classroom was more positive than neutral about the credibility of the instructor, the engagement, the communication by students, and the motivation of students, and results in a positive attitude to the use of Web 2.0 for learning. The thesis suggests that the adoption of interactivity of Web 2.0 technologies has the potential to support learning in higher education.

The relationship between childhood exposure to substance use and substance use as an adult

Magister Artium (Social Work) - MA(SW) / It is a common fact that drug and alcohol abuse has become a complex problem with children in South Africa. There is also a risk that children of substance abusers will become substance abusers themselves. The aim of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between childhood exposure to substance use and substance use as an adult. The theory that was implemented in the study was the Social Learning Theory. The participants were obtained from an outpatient substance abuse treatment centre. A cross sectional study design was used whereby 192 participants were requested to complete an adapted version of the Child Exposure to Domestic Violence scale. The results of the study show that 48% of the respondents experienced exposure to substance abuse which they witnessed as a child. The results of the study indicated that past exposure to substance abuse accounted for a mean of 2.47. Respondents also responded in terms of exposure to parent/s that abused substances, which had a mean of 2.12. The results illustrated that there is a significant positive relationship between past experiences of substance abuse and current experiences of substance abuse within the total sample (r=.39, p:0.01). The study showed that for gender a positive relationship was found for males (r = .23, p:0.01) and for females (r = .34, p:0.01). In terms of family structure there was a significantly positive relationship, which for one parent was (r = .23, p: 0.05) and for two-parent families was(r = .38, p: 0.01). In conclusion early intervention strategies for children who are at risk and who are exposed to substance abuse, should be implemented.

Prao ur ett elevperspektiv – hur upplever elever prao?

Undersökningens syfte är att få en inblick i vad elever i årskurs nio på en skola i Västra Götaland anser om prao, om praoperiodernas kvalitetssäkring samt om de upplever att praon varit till hjälp för gymnasievalet.Höstterminen 2018 blir det obligatoriskt med prao för elever i årskursåtta och nio. I samband med det och våra personliga upplevelser och erfarenheter från våra VFU-perioder under studie-och yrkesvägledarutbildningen uppstod vår tanke om detta examensarbete. Då vi kommit i kontakt med elever som haft delade åsikter om prao ville vi undersöka detta. I undersökning är frågeställningarna följande: “Hur upplever elever i årskurs 9 prao?” och “Hur har praon påverkat gymnasievalet?” För undersökningen valdes en kvalitativ metod. Vi har intervjuat sex stycken elever som går iårskurs nio på en grundskola belägen i Västra Götaland. Skolan valde vi ut efter personlig kännedom då en av oss haft VFU på utvalda skolan. Informanterna valdes ut av studie-och yrkesvägledaren efter önskade kriterier. Empirin analyseras utifrån teorierna Careership och Happenstance learning theory. Resultatet från undersökningen visar att elevernas upplevelse av prao är positiv. Eleverna tycker prao är givande, lärorikt, att det är intressant att få inblick i arbetslivet och nyttigt att få prova på olika arbetsuppgifter. Praon har hjälpt eleverna i gymnasievalet då de efter avslutad prao kunnat värdera och ta ett beslut om vilket gymnasieprogram de ska välja, för att sedan kunna välja ett yrke som passar eleven utifrån sin självkännedom i samspel medupplevelsen från sin prao. I resultatet framkommer även att praon behöver bli mer kvalitetssäkrad. Det finns brister både på praoplatserna och med för-och efterarbete i skolan.

He’s Got Friends in Online Places: The Presence of Social Media in Radicalization

abstract: Social media has become a significant aspect of American life and culture. Criminal groups including extremists of various ideological milieus have found social media useful in their recruitment efforts. Further, these online spaces allow extremists to easily interact with one another, reinforcing each other’s radical perspectives. Little research has examined social media’s role in radicalization and fewer studies have tested the differences between the radicalization processes of individuals espousing disparate ideologies. Using Profiles of Individual Radicalization in the United States, a data set of 804 extremist men, this study sets out to determine whether the role of social media in the radicalization process varies between Islamist and far right extremists using social learning as a theoretical framework. The results indicate no significant difference regarding the role of social media in radicalization between Islamists and far rightists. Additionally, the odds of having radical friends and family were much lower for Islamists than far rightists, suggesting only partial support for social learning theory as an explanation of radicalization. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Criminology and Criminal Justice 2019
