The diploma thesis focuses on the topic of library associations and networks that have a direct impact on development of libraries and librarianship. The main attention was given to library associations of the United Kingdom. The aim of this thesis is to analyze current activities and goals of selected library associations of the United Kingdom. Furthermore the thesis presents library associations of the Czech Republic, their history and current activities. The conclusion provides a comparison of Czech and British library associations. Monitored were primarily legislative frameworks, the focus of library associations, their activities and use of Web 2.0. There were also defined areas of possible future development of the Czech associations.

The master thesis deals with the development of public academic libraries in the Czech Republic. The research identifies the strengths and weaknesses of these libraries, possible areas for further development and new opportunities. The thesis briefly describes the situation of Czech academic librarianship and describes the characteristics of academic libraries. Czech are foreign conceptual documents for these libraries are presented. The research was divided into four parts - a questionnaire survey, where the target group were librarians of these libraries, followed by structured interviews with representatives of library management, group discussions with librarians and structured interviews with students. The conclusion of this thesis is dedicated to the summary of the information obtained from all parts of the research.

The diploma thesis focuses on the topic of the current state of professional library organisations in the Czech republic and the attitudes that the beginning as well as experienced librarians have towards them. The thesis analyses the importance of professional organisations and further analyses each Czech organisation of this type, with emphasis on the current array of professional education opportunities they offer. The core of the thesis lies in a survey examining the attitudes that librarians have towards this type of organisations. The survey consisted of three parts: it was carried out among students of librarianship and informations sciences, among current members of professional library organisations which have an option of an individual membership, and among potential members of these organisations from the ranks of experienced librarians. Based on the analyses of the individual professional organisations and the results of the survey, the thesis also presents several development concept proposals which touch upon areas these organisations should further develop in the future. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt das Bibliothekswesen auf den Maltesischen Inseln. Einleitend werden Länderinformationen, Informationen zur maltesischen Sprache und zu Schul- und Berufsausbildung gegeben, gefolgt von einem Überblick über die maltesische Druckgeschichte, dem Buchmarkt und der Pflichtexemplarregelung auf den Inseln. Im Hauptteil wird auf Unterhaltsträger von maltesischen Bibliotheken eingegangen und alle bekannten Bibliothekstypen vorgestellt. Innerhalb der verschiedenen Bibliotheksgruppen wird mindestens eine Bibliothek anhand ihrer Funktion, Mitarbeiter, finanziellen Situation, vorhandenen Sammlungen, Erschließungsinstrumenten und Benutzungsmodalitäten detailliert dargestellt. Andere Bibliotheken des gleichen Bibliothekstyps werden genannt, Besonderheiten werden erörtert. Des Weiteren wird ein Überblick über die Möglichkeiten bibliothekarischer Ausbildung gegeben. Die beiden bibliothekarischen Berufsverbände MaLIA und MSLA werden kurz anhand ihrer Aufgaben und Tätigkeiten dargestellt. Ausführliche Informationen über die Literaturversorgung der Malteser durch Bibliotheken und die Struktur des Bibliothekswesens in Malta werden in der Zusammenfassung erörtert. Der Text wurde gelegentlich durch graphische Darstellungen ergänzt. Im Anhang der Arbeit befinden sich unter anderem Adressverzeichnisse der bekannten öffentlichen und wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken sowie Karten im DIN A3 Format, auf welchen die Bibliotheken verzeichnet wurden. Die Diplomarbeit basiert auf Literaturstudium, Befragungen per E-Mail und Experteninterviews.

For school libraries to sufficiently contribute to better information skills’ development and creation of a culture of lifelong learning among students, they require backing through well articulated policies both at national and individual school level. This study investigated the prevailing status of school libraries in public secondary schools in Nairobi County, Kenya. Using a survey research design, with a response rate of 68% for school principals and 66% for school librarians, this study established that although the majority of the schools had school libraries, these were individual schools’ efforts. There were no government policies on school libraries and most of the schools lacked explicit library policies. Additionally, they had not embraced contemporary trends in technology and the major impediment was lack of financial support. The study concluded that school libraries in Nairobi County were inadequately resourced and supported and recommended that the government of Kenya should come up with national policies that will entrench school libraries in the education system. / Information Science / MA (Information Science)
