This study gives insight to the origin of pollution in the water resources of the Limpopo province of South Africa. The Limpopo province is the largest rural province in South Africa. Up to 40% of the total population does not have access to sufficient water supply, resulting in adverse health effects. The purpose of this study is to determine (1) the degree of inorganic pollution of borehole water; (2) to identify the pollution sources, and (3) to determine whether the pollution is inherited from the surface water that recharges the groundwater or is caused on site near the bore holes. In order to achieve these objectives, surface water quality data (14 675 samples) and borehole water data (340 samples) at health facilities were analysed. A pollution index, defined by the following ratio:
Pollution index (%) = 100 x ([Cl–] + 2[SO4^-2] + [NO3-] + 3[PO4^-3]) ÷ ([Cl-] + 2SO4^-2 + [NO3-] + [PO4^-3] + [HCO3-])
was used to determine the percentage of contribution of each chemical species towards pollution. This ratio is based on the fact that bicarbonate is released during chemical weathering of rocks whereas sulphate, nitrate, chloride, and phosphate are anthropogenic in origin. The pollution index shows that 6% of the surface waters and 21% of the borehole water is severely polluted. The pollution of the surface water is characterized by high concentrations of sulphate whereas the pollution of the borehole water is characterized by high concentrations of chloride. This indicates that the pollution of the borehole water is not so much the result of the infiltration of polluted surface water, but rather the result of on–site pollution on the surface near the bore holes. / Thesis (M.Sc. South Africa's water resources are, in global terms, scarce and extremely limited (DWAF, 2004).
Groundwater is a valuable source of potable water in South Africa. It was found that most of the health
facilities in the Limpopo Province depend on groundwater as sole source of potable water.
Groundwater quality is to a great extent influenced by the dominant land use in the vicinity of an
aquifer. It is therefore important to carefully manage possible pollution sources of anthropogenic origin.
This may be seen as pro–active water quality management that may result in significant saving on water
treatment.
This aim of this study is to obtain a regional view of the water quality situation at clinics and other health
facilities in the Limpopo Province. It was found that the general water quality at health facilities in the
Province is questionable. It is of concern to note that 56% of health facilities use water that is
unacceptable for human consumption.
Water quality may be managed by introducing appropriate treatment options to treat the water to ideal
water quality standards. This dissertation explores some treatment options used at health facilities in

A reconceptualisation of the concept of social capital: a study of resources for need satisfaction amongst agricultural producers in Vhembe, LimpopoVermaak, Nicolaas Jakobus 28 February 2006 (has links)
Social capital, in broad terms, refers to norms, networks, trust and forms of social connections in societies that allows people to gain access to resources. This study involves a reconceptualisation of the concept of social capital. An overview of social capital literature reveals that economic needs are still dominant in both the theory and practice of development efforts that make use of social capital. It would therefore appear that the social capital paradigm is not balanced in that it does not clearly provide for the satisfaction of the diverse range of needs that people, particularly those in the rural communities, often experience. A resource-orientated approach is suggested in broadening the concept social capital to include the satisfaction of a wider variety of needs.
An effort is made in the literature study, to capture the manifestations of social capital in different societies globally, with particular emphasis on community life in developing communities of the world. In addition, the discussion of social capital is deepened to include need satisfaction. A matrix of needs, as proposed by Max-Neef (1991), is used to argue that social capital would better be seen as a synergetic resource for the satisfaction of various needs. Instead of understanding social capital as a need, single satisfier, or as a `factor of production', an argument is put forward that such a conception of social capital is incomplete and inaccurate and that, instead, social capital should be understood as a multi-dimensional resource that can be used to service various needs of communities.
Extensive fieldwork amongst agricultural producers in the Vhembe district of Limpopo provided ample evidence of social capital, although a precise fit with the mainstream theoretical perspectives was not found. The unusual profile of social capital reaffirmed the argument that social capital is present in different forms in rural developing communities and that social capital can best be seen as multi-dimensional because it has the ability to satisfy a wide variety of needs at different levels. Better use can be made of the concept of social capital by viewing it as multi-dimensional and linked to resources relevant to a wide variety of needs. Further research is needed if social capital is to be used by development planners. / Sosiale kapitaal verwys breedweg na norme, netwerke, vertroue en verskillende vorme van sosiale skakeling. `n Oorsig oor sosiale literatuur toon dat ekonomiese behoeftes die sosiale kapitaal teorie en praktyk domineer, veral tydens ontwilkkelingspogings wat gebruik maak van sosiale kapitaal. Hierdie studie behels `n heroorweging van die konsep sosiale kapitaal. Die sosialekapitaal - paradigma blyk ongeballanseerd te wees aangesien dit nie volkome voorsiening maak vir die verskeidenheid van behoeftes wat mense in landelike gemeenskappe dikwels ondervind nie. Deur die sosiale kapitaal konsep te verbreed, naamlik volgens die bevrediging van `n verskeidenheid van behoeftes, word `n hulpbrongebasseerde benadering tot sosiale kapitaal voorgestel.
Tydens die literatuurstudie is gepoog om die manifestasies van sosiale kapitaal in verskillende samelewings van die wêreld vas te lê, met besondere verwysing na ontwikkelende gemeenskappe van die wêreld. The rapid and sustained development of the rural regions of South Africa continues to pose an
extraordinary challenge to the development community of the country. Policy makers continue to be overwhelmed by the lack of development in the rural areas in spite of the various efforts made to develop them. A review of the publications and development plans of the study region indicates that the planners have for long been pre-occupied with taking limited perspectives of the development
planning problems. Development plans have been conceived and implemented in terms of individual
sectors instead of looking at their relations with other sectors and regions.
This study seeks to make a contribution to the solution of the development problems of the rural
areas of the former homeland regions by demonstrating how an integrated approach to the research process and to development planning could make a difference to the lives of the rural communities.

These problems may manifest in truancy, delinquency, negativism, runaway, antisocial behavior, alcohol and substance abuse and gang involvement.
The results of the study prove that the environment in which the adolescent lives, contribute greatly to the development and the maintenance of rebellious
behavior.

The value of the automated fingerprint identification system as a technique in the identification of suspectsMokwele, Madimetja Edward 02 1900 (has links)
This research is concerned with the value of the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) as a technique in the identification of suspects. A problem was identified in the withdrawal of cases where suspects had been identified by means of fingerprints. The study attempted to determine the value of AFIS in the identification of suspects, to find new knowledge that could improve the situation and suggest ways to apply this knowledge to enhance the performance of AFIS experts, criminal investigators and the prosecution in a court of law. The study adopted a multi-method approach to data collection, with the researcher using a literature review, docket analysis and interviews with AFIS experts from Limpopo Province as his sources of data.
The results of the study showed that AFIS is a valuable system for the identification of fingerprints in that it is fast and accurate but that in South Africa AFIS experts encounter a number of challenges with the system. The main challenges identified were the potential for the system to be attacked by computer hackers; the slowness of creating an SAPS 69 record, particularly when dealing with prints of poor quality; which leads to cases being closed where AFIS experts’ evidence is not tested/accepted; and the fact that in South Africa AFIS is not applied across government departments, which would allow a more comprehensive database.
On the basis of these findings, the study recommends that steps be taken to improve the quality of prints taken at crime scenes, that attention be paid to speeding up the process of dealing with the relevant SAPS 69 records, that investigators and prosecutors be informed about the AFIS process and that the AFIS database be extended to include the fingerprints of all South Africans and immigrants to the country. Lastly, the study suggests that the databases of government departments such as Home Affairs, Public Works Roads & Transport and Safety Security & Liaison (Traffics) be combined to form one national database. / Police Practice / M. Establishing a benchmark for educator work ethic in the Limpopo ProvinceMashamba, Madumi Jonathan 12 September 2012 (has links)
M.Ed. / The birth of a democratic South Africa demanded that all people of this country be integrated into one society (Hariparsad, 2005:1). This implies that people from various cultural backgrounds brought with them their individual, cultural and normative values into the integrative process. For example, there were more than one education system in this country and all were integrated into one system (Bray, 2000:31). According to Bennet (1997:71), the term 'work ethic' describes the preposition that work is a moral obligation and that work occupies a central position in a person's life. Van der Westhuizen (2003:71) argues that a school reflects traits of both societal relationships and organizations. The school is a formal organization consisting of structure and activity that has to be managed to fulfill the intended function. A fundamental management function is leadership (Smith & Cronje, 2001:278), which Gunter (2001:19) defines as the process of directing the behaviour of others towards the accomplishment of objectives and goals of the organization. In a school environment, the task of leadership is accorded to the principal, who needs to be responsible in his/her job for maintaining an effective school environment. Organizations do not achieve their objectives on their own. Someone has to deploy the basic resources that the organization has at its disposal to help it achieve its goals. This important element is management. Managers must activate and guide the organization (Hariparsad, 2005:4), and the responsibility for professional management of a public school is also vested in the principal (South African Schools Act, 1996:16[3]). The researcher believes that the work ethic of the educators will dictate the manner in which the school functions. Hariparsad (2005:5) states that if the work ethic of the educators is based on sound principles of efficient and effective work practices, emerging from a sound value system and a strong individual moral fibre, it can be expected that the school will function as a meaningful organization in society. It seems, however, that some schools face management problems which emanate from the work ethic of the educators. In addition, the management practices and procedures selected by the principal impact on the ethos of the school which in all likelihood will affect the work ethic of the educators (Hariparsad 2005: 6). Educators in South Africa have recently been accused by the public of going on strike far too easily; and hence have been labeled as having a poor work ethic (Makgoba, 2007:7). The work ethic among South African educators has, however, not been determined in any empirical way and this research will attempt to obtain a benchmark for educators in the Limpopo Province of South

The effect of different land uses on household livelihoods in Tale Ga-Morudu Communal Property AssociationRamaloko, Thomas Tshwantshi January 2016 (has links)
This study is about a population of 235 households in Blouberg municipality, Limpopo Province, that constituted itself in 2004 into a Communal Property Association. The Tale Ga-Morudu CPA was formed in order to own, manage and control a total of seventeen farms which were progressively restituted to them during 2004 by the Commission on Restitution of Land Rights. Tale Ga-Morudu households were dispossessed and forcefully removed from a number of fertile, arable and irrigable farms1in the 1960s due to racially discriminatory laws or practices. These households were then relocated by the then apartheid regime on the eastern part of Mogalakwena River. They were distributed in the arid communal areas of Laanglagte/Vergelegen, Matekereng; Ga- Mankgodi; Letswatla and Mamoleka under the traditional leadership of Kgoshi Maleboho of BabinaTšhwene. (Map one). It is the aim of this study to find out how Tale Ga-Morudu CPA currently uses these restituted farms for the households who have said to have benefited from restituted land. The researcher used his own observations, lessons and analysis of perspectives from case studies conducted from Limpopo in order to pursue this aim. This study adopted a descriptive household survey design that used a predominantly quantitative approach, and the use of qualitative methods to complement contextual details. A quantitative questionnaire was used on a sample unit of (20%) 45 households obtained by simple random sampling from a population of 235 households of the CPA. Other qualitative methods include focus group discussion, document review and observation. From the results it is clear that land claimants, prefer to retain existing practices of land use, than risk changes in land use in order to meet their socio-economic needs. Thus, instead of investing in commercial agriculture or wildlife farming, people follow subsistence agriculture and remain dependent on social grants and pensions for their livelihood. The general study findings show that the CPA planned to implement different types of land use including those of direct land use value. These include food gardens, resettlement; game farming; poultry enterprises and livestock grazing, and also of indirect use value. The latter refers to contract crop cultivation, rentals and strategic partnerships. The study found that despite income being generated from indirect types of land use, the majority of these intended beneficiaries never benefited from accrued financial dividends of land rental and development. However, households were still able to take advantage of employment opportunities created by contract crop cultivation and in the process they acquired crop cultivation skills. Furthermore the harvesting of natural resources such as wood and poles also contribute to the wellness of households. Households, also derived cultural wellness and a sense of satisfaction by accessing their restored farms to perform rituals. The general conclusion of the study is that the CPA is underutilizing its properties, including arable and irrigable fields, rentable recreational facilities, game farming and its tourism potential.

School governance in the Limpopo ProvinceSadiki, Ntavhanyeni Ben. 15 August 2012 (has links)
D.Ed. / Limpopo Province, in line with other provinces in South Africa, adopted democratic school governance in public secondary schools. Since the inception of this system in 1997 hopes ran high that eventually the culture of teaching and learning in secondary schools will be improved and subsequently schools will be transformed. Contrarily, there has been a mismatch in terms of the provincial education objectives with what is currently happening in secondary schools in the province. Conditions of school governance in secondary schools as regards the physical, social, moral, economic, and academic problems are deplorable albeit democratic school governing bodies are in place. The 1998: 35.2%; the 1999: 37.5%; the 2000: 51.5%; and the 2001: 59.5% matriculation pass rates could partially be attributed to ineffective school governance. Consequently, communities are concerned about SGB's who are not accomplishing their role and functions as mandated by the SASA of 1996. The focus of this research is on democratic school governance in the Vuwani district in the Limpopo Province. The objective of this research was to probe perceptions of the different members of the SGB's regarding diverse aspects of school governance as mandated by the SASA of 1996.
