Syfte: Syftet med studien var att se om det fanns en correlation mellan AAA och kronisk parodontit med hjälp av en enkät.Material och metod: Män som har undergått screening hos Kärlcentrum vid Skånes Universitetssjukhus i Malmö erbjöds deltagande i studien via telefon. Enkäten som användes formulerades främst med frågor från studien i Self-reported measures for Surveillance of Periodontitis (Eke et al. 2013). Frågor om individens tobaksvanor, om den led av andra sjukdomar, och mediciner lades till som en del av denna studie. Insamlad data analyserades med IBM SPSS Statistics 25 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA. Ingen normalfördelning antogsför analyserna. Värdena bearbetades med Mann-Whitney U test och χ2-test.P-värden < 0.05 togs som statistiskt signifikanta.Resultat: Totalt kontaktades 300 individer, varav 65 (21.7%) inkluderades i studien. Av dessa var 42 (64.6 %) individer i kontrollgruppen medans 23 (35.4%) ingick i AAA-gruppen.Bennedbrytning förekom oftare i AAA gruppen (37.9%) jämfört med kontrollgruppen (11.9%) (p=0.010)Slutsats: En svag länk mellan kronisk parodontit och AAA kan föreslås i detta skede, dock behövs fler studier med större kohort och om möjligt en kliniskt verifierad parodontal diagnos för att med säkerthet bekräfta denna potentiella länken / Aim: The aim of this study was to find if there is a correlation between AAA and chronic periodontitis in regards to their relation with the help of a questionnaire. Questions asking the respondents about tobacco habits, if they suffered other diseases, medication, and more were added as part of this study. Values were processed with Mann-Whitney U test and χ2-test. P-value < 0.05 was accepted as statistically significant Results: A total of 300 individuals were contacted, of which 65 (21.7%) were included in the study. Of these, 42 (64.6 %) were controls and 23 (35.4 %) had AAA. Bone loss was more commonly present in AAA group (37.9%) versus control (11.9%) (p= 0.010)Conclusion: A weak link between chronic periodontitis and AAA may be suggested, however more studies with larger cohorts and potentially clinically verified periodontitis diagnosis, are necessary to establish this potential link more firmly.

Structural and Functional Characterization of Human SNM1AHuang, Simon Y. 23 December 2014 (has links)
<p>DNA interstrand cross-links (ICLs) occur when various chemical agents bind to chromosomal DNA and form a covalent bond between adjacent strands, preventing unwinding of the DNA double helix. The formation of an ICL is therefore extremely toxic to cells and necessitates quick removal and subsequent repair. Human SNM1A is a 5’-phosphate-dependent exonuclease that has been shown to be selectively involved in ICL repair; however the mechanism by which it processes ICL substrates remains unclear. To address this, our research is focused on the structural and functional characterization of SNM1A to determine this mechanism of substrate processing. In this thesis, we report the purification of human SNM1A<sub>698-1040</sub> as a His<sub>6</sub>-NusA tagged protein from 4 L of <em>E. Coli</em> cell culture. This protein was found to possess 5’-phosphate-dependent exonuclease activity, and demonstrated a preference for ssDNA. Additionally, electrophoretic mobility shift assays performed with a D736A/H737A mutant suggest that the binding of SNM1A to DNA is independent of the presence of a 5’ phosphate. Collectively, these results provide insight into the mechanism of SNM1A substrate processing in ICL repair, and establish a platform for future studies of this protein.</p> / Master of Science (MSc)

Investigating Pilot Performance Using Mixed-Modality Simulated Data LinkLancaster, Jeff A. 19 April 2004 (has links)
Empirical studies of general aviation (GA) pilot performance are lacking, especially with respect to envisioned future requirements. Two research studies were conducted to evaluate human performance using new technologies. In the first study, ten participants completed the Modified Rhyme Test (MRT) in an effort to compare the intelligibility of two text-to-speech (TTS) engines (DECtalk and AT&T's Natural Voices) as presented in 85 dB(A) aircraft cockpit engine noise. Results indicated significant differences in intelligibility (p £ 0.05) between the two speech synthesizers across the tested speech-to-noise ratios (S/N) (i.e., −5 dB, -8 dB, and −11 dB S/N) with the AT&T engine resulting in superior intelligibility in all of the S/N. The AT&T product was therefore selected as the TTS engine for the second study.
In the second study, 16 visual flight rules (VFR) rated pilots were evaluated for their data link performance using a flight simulator (ELITE i-GATE) equipped with a mixed-modality simulated data link within one of two flight conditions. Data link modalities included textual, synthesized speech, digitized speech, and synthesized speech/textual combination. Flight conditions included VFR (unlimited ceiling, visibility) or marginal VFR (MVFR) flight conditions (clouds 2800 feet above ground level [AGL], three miles visibility). Evaluation focused on the time required accessing, understanding, and executing data link commands. Additional data were gathered to evaluate workload, situation awareness, and subjective preference.
Results indicated significant differences in pilot performance, mental workload, and situation awareness across the data link modalities and between flight conditions. Textual data link resulted in decreased performance while the other three data link conditions did not differ in performance. Workload evaluation indicated increased workload in the textual data link condition. Situation awareness (SA) measures indicated differences in perceived SA between flight conditions while objective SA measures differed across data link conditions.
Actual or potential applications of this research include guidance in the development of flight performance objectives for future GA systems. Other applications include guidance in the integration of automated voice technologies in the cockpit and/or in similar systems that present elevated levels of background noise during normal communications and auditory display operations. / Ph.
