Esta pesquisa resgata a trajetória de um tipo de publicação muito popular no século XX em todo o mundo, cujo renascimento verifica-se atualmente no mercado editorial brasileiro: os clássicos da literatura universal em quadrinhos. Para isso, buscou-se conhecer o legado da Classics Illustrated (1941-1971), a mais emblemática série de clássicos em quadrinhos do século XX, com presença em 36 países e traduzida para 26 idiomas. Criada por Albert Kanter (1897-1973), imigrante russo radicado nos Estados Unidos, a série espalhou-se por grande parte do Ocidente e influenciou o mercado editorial brasileiro a partir da segunda metade do século XX, quando foi trazida para o País pelo também imigrante russo Adolfo Aizen (1907-1991), com o nome de Edição Maravilhosa (1948-1962). Este trabalho explora a adaptação de obras literárias para quadrinhos com base na autonomia de cada uma das linguagens, identificando sua função nas operações da memória cultural e também os principais editores que compartilharam essa prática cultural no Brasil, a partir de reflexões relacionadas às adaptações como processo e como produto. / This research measures the trajectory of a very popular editorial device in the twentieth century in the world, which revival is now verified in the Brazilian publishing market: the classics of world literature in comic book format. For this, it intended to rescue the legacy of Classics Illustrated (1941-1971), the most emblematic series of classic in comics in the Twentieth century, with presence in 36 countries and 26 languages. Created by Albert Kanter (1897-1973), Russian immigrant living in the United States, the series spread over much of the Western world and influenced the Brazilian publishing market from the second half of the twentieth century when it was brought to the country by also Russian immigrant Adolfo Aizen (1907-1991), with the name of Edição Maravilhosa (1948-1962). This research explores the definitions of classics in comics from the autonomy of each language, identifies their role in the cultural memory operations, the main publishers who shared this cultural practice in Brazil and raises reflections related to adaptation as a process and as a product.

The publishers catalogues of great circulation in the book market of our country present a vast panorama of the volume of this "editorial formula . This thesis, entitled Adaptation of literary classics: a history of reading in Brazil, having as theoretical reference authors who historicize the practices of reading and writing at various periods of history, as well as works that demonstrate the process of rewriting, demonstrates the existence of adjustment marks in Brazil, notably since the nineteenth century, when the country was culturally nourished by works from other places. This research not only makes visible the vital role developed by adaptations as a symbolic and historically constituted benefit and that is part of the cultural construction of Brazil, but also brings up the discussion of an object that is closely linked to the history of literature, reading, the reader and the book, in order to highlight the legitimate way of writing and reading. To restore, therefore, the historical background of this genre, is to show how their use and circulation remained today as a collection of reading and knowledge, responsible for presenting the vast legacy of universal poetry. In this perspective, the adaptation is conceived as a rewritten text, from a classic work called literary for a public that has no access to the "original" text. As such, the adapter must propose meaning to a cultural community from which the reader takes part of. / As adaptações de clássicos literários constituem atualmente uma prática de leitura muito disseminada no universo escolar. Os catálogos de editoras de grande circulação no mercado livreiro de nosso país apresentam um vasto panorama do volume dessa fórmula editorial . A presente Tese, cujo título é Adaptação de clássicos literários: uma história de leitura no Brasil, tomando como referência teórica autores que historicizam as práticas de leitura e de escrita em vários períodos da História, bem como obras que manifestam processo de reescrituras, demonstra a existência de marcas de adaptação no Brasil, mais notadamente desde o século XIX, quando o país se alimentava culturalmente de obras originárias de outras terras. Esta pesquisa não apenas torna visível o papel fundamental desempenhado pelas adaptações como um bem simbólico, historicamente constituído e que faz parte da construção cultural do Brasil, como também traz à tona a discussão de um objeto que está estreitamente ligado à história da literatura, da leitura, do leitor e do livro, de forma a pôr em evidência esse modo legítimo de escrever e de ler. Restabelecer, pois, o percurso histórico desse gênero, é mostrar como seus usos e circulação permaneceram na atualidade como um acervo de leitura e de conhecimento, responsável por apresentar o vasto legado da poética universal. Nessa perspectiva, a adaptação é concebida como um texto reescrito, a partir de uma obra clássica denominada literária, para um público que não tem acesso ao texto original . Como tal, o adaptador deve empreender significado para uma comunidade cultural da qual participa o leitor.

Ce travail vise à observer les mécanismes à l'œuvre dans la canonisation des nouvelles finlandaises et estoniennes. L’auteur présente d’abord les travaux théoriques qui concernent le canon littéraire et les fréquents débats entourant cette notion. Il étudie ensuite le rôle des plus importantes instances canonisatrices (recensions, travaux critiques, prix littéraires, anthologies, traductions, institution scolaire et universitaire) en Finlande et en Estonie. Une attention particulière est accordée à la réception critique dans les revues littéraires des deux pays, et à la présentation qui est faite des classiques de la nouvelle dans les manuels de littérature.Des études de cas sont ensuite présentées : à partir d’exemples tirés d’écrivains ou de thèmes précis, l’auteur y met en lumière certains phénomènes caractéristiques de la canonisation, et diverses circonstances susceptibles de faciliter la canonisation des textes, ou au contraire d’y faire obstacle. Ces analyses débouchent sur des propositions de nouveaux outils théoriques pour l'étude diachronique des canons. / This study aims to analyze the mechanisms of canonization, based upon Finnish and Estonian short stories. The author first presents the theoretical works about literary canons and the frequent debates that surround that notion. He then studies the respective roles of the most important canonizing instances (critical articles, critical works, literary prizes, anthologies, translations, educational system) in Finland and Estonia. Attention is particularly drawn toward critical reception in literary journals, and the way classical short stories are evocated in literary handbooks. Case studies dealing with precise authors and themes lead to several proposals of new theoretical tools for the diachronic study of canons and the description of canonization-related phenomena and the different circumstances which can help or hinder the canonization of short stories.
