The plenary address: A rhetorical analysis

Amrine, William James 01 January 2007 (has links)
In terms of structure, style, content and intended audience, Genre Analysis 58, this thesis presents a rhetorical analysis of the plenary address as a genre. Four examples of the opening plenary were analyzed because they represent the opening plenary lecture-keynote speech type, the most common presented at conferences: Mina Shaughnessy and the teaching of writing, Keynote address, Literacy after the revolution and The uneasy partnership between grammar and writing instruction.

On a women's language

Brown, Tamara 01 January 1990 (has links)
Assessing the feminist belief that women have a perspective dramatically differing from the patriarchal perspective, and that this viewpoint is, or could be, couched in a language differing from the norm, this researcher addressed the following three questions: (1) is there a definition of a women's language? (2) does a women's language exist? and (3) if a women's language does exist, in what form does it exist? These questions engendered feminist rhetorical criticism on the work of two radical feminists well known for their interest in, and attention to, the issue of a women's language.

The author aimed to understand the factors of the expressive linguistic use made by this artist, use wich is sense effects producer and use wich is a reflection of romantic ideology preponderant in the first half of the 19th century, ideology on which the Garrett s personality is sedimented. Besides, considering the Stylistic as the science that studies the style and considering style as the manifestation on the linguistic constructions of the writer s personality the author arrived at the conclusion that the notoriety given to the cited romantic novel is due to the stylistic perfection of the Garrett s writing, artist that transmits, by means of his enunciates, information the content of which is not completely contained in the semantic load that exist either in the words, or in the sentences, or in the full text, but rather information the content of which is also contained in the sense effects produced by stylistic facts.

Theodore Dwight Weld's use of the judicial motif in American Slavery As It Is: Testimony of a Thousand Witnesses

Trudeau, Justin Thomas 02 December 1998 (has links)
This thesis examines the rhetoric of Theodore Dwight Weld's American Slavery As It Is: Testimony of a Thousand Witnesses. Published anonymously in 1839, Weld's publication became the longest antislavery tract in American history. It left its mark on the abolitionist movement itself and future antislavery literary works most notably Uncle Tom's Cabin. Despite its historical and rhetorical importance, Weld's text has been subjected to little critical exploration. This being the case, it is the goal of this study to find the dominant means of persuasion that Weld used to argue to antebellum northern audiences that slavery is evil and should be abolished. Weld accomplishes this goal by using a judicial motif throughout his tract. In his text, Weld acts as prosecutor and asks his readers to act as jurors in judging the legitimacy of slavery in the United States. In doing so, Weld relies on evidence in the form of testimony and newspaper advertisements to prove his arguments. I utilize the Hermagorian system of stasis to shed light on Weld's use of the judicial motif. This system points to four main questions, which represent the main stands of argument between a prosecutor and defense. The four main questions are the stases of conjecture, definition, quality, and objection. Under the stasis of conjecture I show that Weld demonstrates that slavery results when individuals are motivated by absolute arbitrary power. Under the stasis of definition I argue that the South offered the justifications of "necessary evil" and "positive good" in linking their way of life to the institution of slavery. Weld rejects these justifications and establishes his own account of slavery to be a thirst for absolute power over others. In the third stasis of quality I show that Weld argues that human nature is against slavery and therefore, should be abolished. In the last stasis of objection I show that Weld answers the question of whether abolitionists are justified in condemning slavery. Using The Hermagorian system of stasis shows that although each one is applicable to an analysis of Weld's tract, the stases of quality and objection are the most fruitful in establishing the effectiveness of Weld's rhetoric. By combining both emotion and logic for his jurors, Weld accomplishes his role as prosecutor in the case. Once his jurors act in accordance to the judicial motif as members of humanity and see the slaves in the same light, they are forced to bring back a just verdict of guilty because slavery is against the very essence of humanity itself. / Graduation date: 1999

The sacramental art of John Donne’s sermons on the penitential psalms

George, Philip Michael 11 1900 (has links)
John Donne was indisputably the foremost English preacher of his day. Many studies have focussed on his instructional methods; fewer have concentrated on how he tries to move his hearers. Donne especially liked preaching on the psalms. Since Christian antiquity, the seven psalms known as the penitential psalms have enjoyed a privileged place in church worship. They are central to the sacrament of penance. By Donne's time, changes in the Church of England's sacramental theology had all but eliminated the practice of penance. Nevertheless, Donne considers penance or, as it had become known, repentance, to be a crucial part of believers' lives. With his sermons on the penitential psalms Donne contributes to the vast body of literature surrounding the sacrament of penance, but his contribution is unique. He thinks that since the second person of the Trinity is identified with the Word of God, the institution of preaching God's Word is incarnational. In the sacraments, the priest ushers in the Body of Christ; in the sermon, Donne believes, the preacher's role is similar. For Donne, sermonizing is sacramental in effect. In his sermons he attempts to bring the real presence of God to his listeners. Moreover, his sermons display a "sacramental mimesis": they enact their subject matter by their very words and try to effect change in the listeners as the words are uttered. Further, Donne thinks that since God established all the ordinances of the church, none of them should be ignored. Therefore, Donne's twenty-one sermons on the penitential psalms reveal a preacher who is on the one hand a conservative churchman and on the other a startlingly innovative preacher.

Le language romanesque de Raymond Queneau : l'exemple du Chiendent

Rouette, Annik January 2004 (has links)
This dissertation concerns the multilingual structure found in the fictitious works of French writer Raymond Queneau (1903-1976) by examining the different languages of genres that occur in this author's first novel, Le Chiendent (1933). The distinctive style of literary discourse and the diversity in the languages of interspersed genres found in this novel are examined. The stylistic analysis is inspired primarily by the Bakhtin theory and aims to shed light on Queneau's language-related practices in a fictitious context. The author's linguistic theory is then examined in order to better understand the philosophy that underlies this innovative practice. The dialogic function of the spoken language and the encyclopedic variety of discourses are some of the aspects considered as essential for accessing the ethos of this novel.
