Exploring the role of the postmodern feminist voice in the development of the school language text

Perumal, Juliet Christine January 1997 (has links)
Bibliography: leaves 91-107. / Commencing with an abbreviated herstorical review of the various strands that comprise feminism's rich tapestry, this study proceeds with an enquiry into the postmodern feminist challenge against patriarchal ideological extravagances that have valorized Enlightenment significations of knowledge. Building on the postmodern feminist insight, that the discourses that constitute women as deficit Other permeate every aspect of the social configuration, language as a social and cultural construct is examined with a view to ascertaining the extent to which it has aided and abetted in the definition, deprecation and exclusion of women and our realities in a male supremacist society. In surveying the sexual/textual pedagogic terrain, the study proceeds from the premise that texts as cultural artifacts are crucial in the transmission of cultural attitudes, values, and the construction of gendered identities. Exploring the Communication, Literacy and Language component of the Outcomes-Based Learning document, and the interim core English second language syllabus, currently at the centre of educational debate, the study attempts to show that despite the documents' rhetoric to promote gender sensitivity and inclusivity, their allegiance to androcentric multilingual and multicultural concerns entrench phallogocentric binarism, thus making them complicit in furthering patriarchal ideology. The study concludes with a few recommendations for further research in the area of feminist pedagogy.

The Articulation of Difference: Imagining "Women's Language" between 1650 and the Present

Salvo, Sophie Alexander January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation is an archaeology of so-called Weibersprache. While the concept of feminine language is typically associated with 1970s feminist theory, this study shows that there was a diverse history of conceptualizing “women’s language” prior to this period. I begin with seventeenth-century ethnographic texts that report on a langage des femmes among Island Caribs (by authors such as Jean Baptiste du Tertre, Charles de Rochefort, and Raymond Breton). Shifting genres, I then trace how the idea of a separate women’s language was appropriated by German philology and philosophies of language in the nineteenth century. I show how authors ranging from Wilhelm von Humboldt to Fritz Mauthner reconceptualize Weibersprache to be a universal female phenomenon and present “primitive” women’s languages as evidence for the general alterity of female speech. The second chapter of the dissertation juxtaposes this genealogy of Weibersprache with the nineteenth-century debate over the origin of grammatical gender, and contends that discourses on gendered language constitute an important part of the broader reconfiguration of the sexes during this period. The third chapter moves to literary discourse to show how the notion of women's language fulfills a different discursive function around 1900. With recourse to texts by Robert Musil (Vereinigungen, Drei Frauen), Hugo von Hofmannsthal (Furcht, Elektra), and Walter Benjamin (“Das Gespräch”), I demonstrate how Modernist writers use the idea of an alternative feminine language as a means to test the boundaries of their own literary genres. Once the concept of Weibersprache is reimagined in Modernist literature, it assumes a utopian dimension, which then becomes a central concern for French feminist theory. The fourth chapter offers new readings of feminist theories of language (Hélène Cixous, Luce Irigaray, Julia Kristeva) by contrasting their focus on textuality with earlier conceptions of Weibersprache that link women’s language to orality. A genealogy of “women’s language” from “primitive” phenomenon to feminist politics in ethnography, philology, literature and theory, this dissertation is an interdisciplinary study of language, sex and gender.

This thesis presents a study on the discursive construction of identities in a corpus of 54 personal web pages of women retrieved from the Internet. Following the theoretical perspectives of the field of language and gender research, gender is taken to be fluid, co-constructed in and through discourse in communicative events, socially and historically situated. The linguistic and extra-linguistic resources used by the authors in their personal presentation are analyzed in both micro and macro perspectives. The results from this study lead to a conclusion that gender is constructed and sustained both according to traditional discourse of what it means to be a woman in the present Brazilian society and against it, as gender is not to be taken on its own, but intertwined with other identities and the social stands of the authors, such as age, family position, marital status, profession, amongst others / Doutorado / Doutor em Linguística

An investigation of biased language use as a tool for assessing anti-lesbian prejudice among heterosexual women

Medler, Barbara R. January 2002 (has links)
The present study examined the viability of a model of biased language use (e.g., Maass et al., 1989; Maass et al., 1996) as a measure of anti-lesbian prejudice among heterosexual women. As a matter of methodological and psychometric exploration, four alternative methods of scoring linguistic abstraction were employed. One hundred eighty-one female university undergraduates provided abstraction ratings for a series of seven fictitious news clippings, adapted from von Hippel et al. (1997), four of which depicted either heterosexual or lesbian women engaging in behaviors that were either socially favorable or unfavorable and lesbian stereotypic or counterstereotypic. Participants also completed a "Memory Test" devised for this study, a demographic questionnaire, and the ATL Subscale of the ATLG (Herek, 1988, 1994).The prediction that the linguistic expectancy bias (LEB; e.g., Maass, 1999) would be observed in the present intergroup context was not supported. The overall pattern of results suggested some stability across scoring methods. A number of implications of the findings are considered, with a focus on methodological concerns and applications to practice. / Department of Counseling Psychology and Guidance Services

Estudo enunciativo sobre o funcionamento de "super" como forma livre e sua relação com o dizer feminino / Enunciative study on the operation of "super" as free form and its relation to the feminine enunciative mode

Bertagnoli, Danusa Lopes, 1984- 07 March 2014 (has links)
Orientador: Mónica Graciela Zoppi Fontana / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-25T13:06:31Z (GMT). In this work we seek to describe the operation of super as free form, especially in its relation to the verb, for example, super quero (Isuper want), super recomendo (Isuper recommend), super vou comprar (I'm super going to buy), etc. In these cases, we observed the effect of super on the verb without it being attached to the verbal base, thus showing a different operation from that of the prefix super- as, for example, superproteger (overprotect) and superestimar (overrate). In order to understand this operation, at first we analyzed the morphosyntactic aspects that characterize this form, on the one hand thinking its relation to super-(prefix) and, moreover, its relation to the verbs it affects. In a second stage, we sought to understand the semantic-enunciative operation of super, considering the concept of a modifiercalled "surrealisant" (overrealizing) by García Negroni (1995, 1999) as well as the concepts of modality and performativity. Through them, we can understand the operation of super as a free form in the enunciation, characterizing it as a mark by which the speaker represents themselvesin the utterance, or as anenunciative mode in which it is possible to observe the relation between the subject and the language. Finally, due to the nature of our corpus, which consists mainly of utterances taken from blogs with themes generally characterized as feminine, we purposed to analyze the space of enunciation in which these utterancesoccur (the blogosphere), as well as the determinations of gender relations observed in this space in order to show how super can, among other language marks, characterize a feminine enunciative mode / Mestrado / Linguistica / Mestra em Linguística

On a women's language

Brown, Tamara 01 January 1990 (has links)
Assessing the feminist belief that women have a perspective dramatically differing from the patriarchal perspective, and that this viewpoint is, or could be, couched in a language differing from the norm, this researcher addressed the following three questions: (1) is there a definition of a women's language? (2) does a women's language exist? and (3) if a women's language does exist, in what form does it exist? These questions engendered feminist rhetorical criticism on the work of two radical feminists well known for their interest in, and attention to, the issue of a women's language.
