January 2012 (has links)
The present thesis aims at examining some self-help works adapted to children\teenagers readers, establishing as a parameter of analysis the adult books they were adapted from. A comparison between the original adult works and their children\teenagers adaptation is proposed, for which seven books were analyzed. Our aim is to headlight the linguistic- discursive strategies handled to adapt the adult books into children/teenagers books. In order to underlie the analysis, a study of the children\teenagers literature history and self help books composition was carried out. Some discourse and enunciation theoretical principles in a greimasian semiotic perspective guided this research, as well as gender related bakhtinian and greimasian theory. Some New Rhetoric aspects were also dealt with. As a result, we hope to portrait the discursive image projected by the books studied. As a conclusion, the analyzed children\teenagers versions have as an aim to get the children and youngsters ready to deal with adult life challenges they will face in the future, such as: to develop financial intelligence, to learn how to absorb changes, to develop enterprising spirit, among other abilities / Doutor

A critical analysis of the screen adaptation of Saule’s Unyana womntu

Mbatsha, Thembisa January 2012 (has links)
This research will concentrate on various aspects of the screen adaptation of “Unyana womntu” (Saule, 1989). This study comprises of six chapters. In Chapter 1 of this study, the research aims and objectives are formulated. The research methods that are to be followed will involve a thorough reading of the written text, as well as a comprehensive repetitive viewing of all the episodes of the screen version. In the final part of Chapter 1, background information is provided on the personal life of the author as well as on his contributions to the African literary tradition. Background information on the production of the screen version is also provided. In the Chapter 2, the theoretical aspects of the phenomenon of literary adaptation are discussed. This discussion provides a framework for the analysis of the adaptation of “Unyana womntu” (Saule, 1989) in the remaining chapters of this study. The aim of this chapter is to identify and discuss the most important principles which come into play when the written text is adapted into a screen production. Since the screen production belongs to the genre of the performing arts, this chapter is introduced with a discussion on the performing arts and on the drama, in particular. The section will be concluded with a discussion on the different sub-types of the drama which can be found, including the screen production. The main emphasis is on an analysis of the basic features and principles of the drama in screen format. Since the screen play Unyana Womntu (1998) is based upon a novel by the same title, the literary features of the novel are to be discussed here as well. The specific features of the Xhosa novel will also receive attention.

The evolution of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights through a study of its receptions and adaptations

Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis covers the entire range of British and American film adaptations of Emily Brontë’s novel, Wuthering Heights, as no cumulative study on this larger selection has been done thus far. However this will not be the only objective of this thesis, as I create a link between the author’s life to her novel, between the novel to the early criticism, and the criticism to later adaptations, forming a chain of transformation down the ages, to the original novel. By linking the adaptations to the earlier reception of the novel, a change of social interaction will be uncovered as one of its reasons for surviving. These examples of adaptation will be shown to be just as relevant to popular culture history as its original inspiration. This is the result of an unfolding movement of change and mutation, where each adaptation pushes to connect with the past and future. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2014. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Bible a její adaptace pro děti / Bible and Its Adaptations for Children

Ječmenová, Kateřina January 2019 (has links)
The diploma thesis The Bible and Its Adaptations for Children addresses the question of the quality of children's Biblical adaptations. It aims to compile a comprehensive set of criteria based on relevant literature which children's adaptations should meet. These criteria should become a practical tool for primary school teachers to make it easier for them to select quality stories for their lessons. The entire first chapter is devoted to the Bible and should serve as a general knowledge base of the book. The second chapter describes children's literature in terms of its specifics and psychological characteristics of young readers. A special place in this chapter belongs to myth (as one of the essential biblical genres) and the Bible itself, and the examination of their place in children's literature. The chapter on children's literature also includes a section the aim of which is to explain the role of illustration in children's books and to remind us of its crucial position in children's literature. The following chapter deals with the term adaptation, first from the general literary point of view, and then it focuses on the child recipient and the peculiarities of adapting the Bible. At the end of this chapter, the planned set of criteria is created on the bases of the previous theoretical part...
