January 2014 (has links)
The critical analysis of Famílias terrivelmente felizes (2003) short stories, by Marçal Aquino, aims at identifying the use that the author makes of a violence language that pervades the articulation of themes and motifs, the constitution of narrators, the characterization of characters, and the materiality of texts. In regard to content, this violence is adjusted, either predominantly or incidentally, to images of physical, psychological, social, and symbolical death, features of an authoritarian Brazilian society and raw material for the production line of a new realism present in contemporary Brazilian fiction. Therefore, the role of this language is ambiguous, thanks to the ironic happening, with its action marked by subtlety, but also being completely perverse, installing itself in the intimate life of irony interpreters that experience the emptying of public space in the Brazilian social and political post-military regime period. In these terms, national symbols related to family metaphor are questioned by Aquino's short stories, such as to that represented by the supranational family, the Nation-state, and the one represented by the ideal model of bourgeois family / Mestre

January 2015 (has links)
Abstract: This study focuses on the intersection between myth, literature and law in Oedipus the King, by Sophocles, and aims to identify the connections between these areas of knowledge in Greek tragedy. It also aims to demonstrate how literary interpretation can be useful to identify the legal issues in literary narratives, as well as enhance the psychological and sociological functions of the myth, approaching it from the law purposes, notably as model of human behavior and form of social control. It adopts as a starting point for the input provided by the autopoietic systems theory by Niklas Luhmann, from which originate the basic foundations to justify the communication between different niches of knowledge and theorists of the Law and Literature Movement. Comparative literature under Bakhtin's dialogism also reinforces the notion of communication between speeches of various kinds (anthropological, literary and legal). Studies of Frye, Mielietinski and Durand explain the dual relationship established between myth and literature, and modern thinkers such as Nietzsche and Lévi-Strauss show that the myths will continue to be valued and survive. The so-called "Campbell prolegomenon", especially from the perspective of sociological and psychological function of mythic narrative and Eliade's arguments that conveys the idea of ritualistic character of myth and its correspondence to a set of exemplary codes of conduct, even more the relation myth and Law. In sequence, starting from theoretical considerations, the research focuses on the issue of analogy between the wisdom of Oedipus, embodied in the solution of the riddle of the Sphinx and in the healing of Thebes, with legal interpretation issues. Thus, the thesis aims to achieve the expansion and fusion of horizons of each of one of the areas of knowledge involved, especially from the point of view of identification and understanding of the law and its resonance in Greek tragedy, and the ... / Mestre

A partir da análise de uma seleção de poemas que compõem o livro em questão, buscamos mostrar que Manoel de Barros introjeta nas malhas de um discurso poético densamente imagético seu pensamento crítico, fazendo do poema um suporte para a crítica / Manoel de Barros, a poet that appeared on the horizon of Brazilian literature in 1937, has the poetic image and the metalanguage as the main strength points of his poetry, that is, the Barrosiana poetry is characterized by the interpenetration of two spaces of language, the imaging and the metalinguistic. The raw material of the imaging elaboration of Manoel de Barros is searched, mainly, on the lexical paradigms of nature, of the intimate and of the Pantanal from Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. Regarding the base principle that governs the construction of the poetic image, we highlight the fusion of totally dissonant realities between themselves. The elements used as raw materials are taken from their usual position and updated by a subjective look that operates by means of analogy, what generates an above-real poetic Nature that tends to cause strangeness to the reader once it removes the references. This operation retakes poetic construction resources used by the surrealists. Regarding a dialog with the lyrical modernity foundations and a revisit of surrealism, we focus on a specific book, O guardador de águas, that brings concomitantly the action and the conception of Nature as metalanguage. From the analysis of a selection of poems that constitute the referred book, we intent to show that Manoel de Barros introjects in the tissue of a densely imaging poetic discourse his critical thought, making the poem a support for the criticism

The purpose of this thesis was to reflect about the romance¿s consecration process along the XIXth century in Brazil. We ascertained that this kind of literature wasn¿t a priori included in the national literary patrimony, but contrariwise, was the result of a lengthy and complex process of historical construction, once the romance was absent in the firsts anthologies, which project were ground the national literature, published between 1830 and 1850 decades. Therefore, we searched the critical discourses about the romance, under editorial forms which was a capacity of consecration, like that appointed to scholar system (literary histories, literature courses, anthologies and rhetoric treatises), and the periodical press, where this kind of literature was object of critical discourses¿ attention / Doutorado / Historia e Historiografia Literaria / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária

This study is about the Goiânia literature, definite exact, about texts that bring reference of the south west of Goiás as a symbolic space of the recognizable specificity culture with the goal to understand the build of this space. These histories and the literature are the patent fields of this place building. In the histories it is possible to identify the registration of the "own meaning" and see to act, through the specific process of the texts elaborations a relation group of the envolved people, the local writers, in definite spaces through their trajectories and contract. The apprehension of the building way of this places privileged the writers that in reason of their texts and through them, as well as the relation they keep with the places, they envolved in process of the building of the culture references that are definied of their spaces of life and history. The building of the south west of Goiás- object that firmed for this job- conducted since the start, a mix among the people, their texts and the places and played with the possibility of an investigation way defined for the relations among those three dimensions as the most appropriate to the understanding of this building. The defined chapters are fragments, joined for the idea of a constant union, whose the main scenery is a history and a social place. The two choosen texts were interpreted the contraposition, besides, in a comparison and the contents that appears as significatives differences, as a consequence to the view of the places that each text build. The reading in comparision here realizied has the suggest of Said (1995), of an interpretative view that it analyzied together treating them the way of not making them all together, but mix them through the experiment of the building of views, the culture images, the history and the society. The interpretation of this texts considered the relation of the narration with the culture. The Harry Potter phenomenon literary production, generic traditions, and the question of valuesGlover, Jayne Ashleigh January 2004 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the first four books of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. It accounts for the widespread success of the novels by examining their publication and marketing histories, and their literary achievement as narratives including a sophisticated mix of generic traditions. Chapter One looks at the popularity of the novels, comparing their material production and marketing by Rowling’s English language publishers: Bloomsbury in Britain and Scholastic in the United States of America. The publisher’s influence on the public perception of each book is demonstrated by comparative study of its mode of illustration and layout. Further, the design of the books is linked to their strategic marketing and branding within the literary world. The second chapter considers Rowling’s debt to the school story. It concentrates first on the history of this relatively short-lived genre, briefly discussing its stereotypical features and values. Traditional elements of setting and characterisation are then examined to show how the Harry Potter novels present a value system which, though apparently old-fashioned, still has an ethical standpoint designed to appeal to the modern reader. Chapter Three focuses on the characterisation of Harry as a hero-figure, especially on how the influence of classical and medieval texts infuses Rowling’s portrayal of Harry as a hero in the chivalric mode. The episodes of “quest” and “test” in each book illustrate specifically how he learns the values of selflessness, loyalty, mercy and fairness. Chapter Four surveys the contribution of modern fantasy writing to the series. It shows how Rowling creates a secondary world that allows us to perceive magic as a metaphorical representation of power. This focus on the relationship between magic and power in turn has a bearing on our assessment of the author’s moral stance. The thesis concludes by suggesting that Rowling’s unusual mix of genres is justified by the values they share, and which are inscribed in her work: the generic combination forms a workable, new and exciting mode of writing that helps to account for the phenomenal popularity of the series.

The language of the theatre in the apocalypse of JohnVoortman, Terence Craig 23 August 2012 (has links)
M.A. / An explanation of what I will be doing. how I will be doing. it, and why I will be doing this research is given below. The purpose of this subsection is to enable the reader to have greater clarity regarding the overall objectives of the thesis. Chapter 1: "Ezekiel the Tragedian" The objective of chapter 1 is to examine the link between apocalypse and tragedy as genre forms. The work of Ezekiel the Tragedian belongs to the world of both tragedy and apocalypse. Ezekiel, the Hellenistic Jew, was clearly influence by a Hellenistic genre form (namely Greek tragedy) in his work the "Exodus of Moses" (an inter-testamental work based on the Exodus of Moses as mentioned in the Old Testament). Ezekiel the Jew adapts his message towards his Hellenistic audience. The question one asks is "Could John, the Jew, likewise have adapted his message towards his Hellenistic audience? Could John have used Greek drama to communicate his prophetic-apocalyptic message to his Hellenistic audience?". 1.Biermann and I.Grabe, ibid, lff. "The Exodus of Moses" has significant points of comparison with the Revelation of John. These include a vision of a figure seated on a throne in heaven (a typically apocalyptic scene), seven plagues of judgement, a battle involving huge armies, the Exodus account of the deliverance of Israel, and a chorus who sings choral songs. Ezekiel adapts and develops the Biblical narrative and expresses it in the genre of Greek drama. Chapter2: "Tragedy and the Hellenistic World" The objective of chapter 2 is to examine the evidence of tragedy in Hellenistic times. This will include examining the influence of traaedy in the seven cities of Asia Minor to whom John writes, as well as the Jews and their association with the theatre. The popularity of tragedy will be researched. The use of tragedy in the Imperial cult will be also be examined. The question that needs to be asked is "Would John be influenced by Greek drama in his communicating with the seven churches of Asia Minor? And were his audience in the seven cities familiar with Greek drama?" Chapter 3: "The Elements of _Greek Drama in the 126 -v'@ation of John" The objective of chapter 3 is to examine research regarding the Revelation of John and Greek drama. The research shall be discussed in terms of certain features common to Greek drama (for example acts and scenes, the role of the chorus. the structure, the dramatic actors etc). Furthermore, my intention is to show that a number of reputable scholars have noted significant similarities between the Revelation of John and Greek drama, with some even arguing that the Revelation of John is written in the form of a Greek drama. The viewpoint that the Revelation is written in the szenre of Greek tragedy is a respectable viewpoint and has a noteworthy following. Chapter 4: The Form of the Revelation" The form of Revelation will be compared with the form of Greek drama in chapter 4. The purpose is to see whether noteworthy similarities of form exist between the Revelation and Greek drama. Chapter 5: The Function of the Revelation" The cathartic' function of Greek tragedy and the cathartic function of the Revelation will be examined. The question asked is: "does the Revelation have a cathartic function? and if so how does this cathartic function compare with Greek tragedy? Why would the revelation have a cathartic effect?" Chapter 6: "The Throne Scene" The "throne scene" of chapter 4 following is one of the most important scenes in the Revelation of John. "Throne scenes"are popular accounts in both prophetic and apocalyptic writings 63. In this chapter we shall examine the "throne scene" from the viewpoint of Greek drama, so as to see whether it would indeed be possible to communicate a throne scene effectively in Greek drama practice. `Catharsis means "healing" in lavmens terms. This is abundantly clear in the throne scenes of Isaiah and Ezekiel in the Old Testament, as well as an abundance of throne scenes in inter-testamental apocalyptic writings.
