E-commerce going global : the case of a Latvian e-tailer expanding over borders

This paper identifies, analyzes and interprets key challenges that e-retailers face when they decide to expand their e-business into a new market. The main topics are the cross-border factors and e-commerce strategies based on theories from previous studies to drive profitable growth. The paper illustrates the case study of an e-retail company, Dateks, in expansion in the Baltic countries. The findings show that the localization strategy in e-retail companies is more highly used when expanding to a new market. The challenge for an e-retailer in expansion is to be cost-effective.

THE JAK-STAT PATHWAY IS REQUIRED FOR MULTIPLE EARLY EVENTS IN DROSOPHILA OOGENESIS

The Janus kinase (JAK) pathway is an integral part of signaling through a variety of ligands and receptors in mammals. The extensive reutilization and pleiotropy of this pathway in vertebrate development is conserved in other animals as well. In Drosophila melanogaster, JAK signaling is involved in embryonic pattern formation, sex determination, larval blood cell development, wing venation, planar polarity in the eye, and formation of other adult structures. Here we describe several roles for JAK signaling in Drosophila oogenesis. The gene for a JAK pathway ligand, unpaired, is expressed specifically in the polar follicle cells, two pairs of somatic cells at the anterior and posterior poles of the developing egg chamber. A primary defect of chambers with reduced JAK activity is fusion of successive chambers. These chambers exhibit an expansion of the polar cell population and concomitant loss of interfollicular stalk cells. Mosaic analysis of both JAK pathway transducers, hopscotch and stat92E, reveals that JAK signaling is specifically required in the somatic follicle cells. Another role of JAK signaling is in oocyte localization. In chambers mosaic for loss of hop activity, oocyte mislocalization results. Proper localization occurs only when the posterior follicle cells are wild type for hop.

Mass limits for 5-dimensional super Yang-Mills

In this thesis we consider the N=1 super Yang-Mills theory on S5 with a single hypermultiplet in the adjoint representation. We argue that there is a critical value of the hypermultiplet mass M=3/2r, where r is the radius of S5, for which the free energy vanishes, and we study the model in the proximity of this value. For large N we provide analytical results for the free energy and the eigenvalue density in the weak and strong coupling limits, and in one case we solve the saddle point equation using a technique introduced by Hoppe. We present numerical results to show where each approximation is justified, and to explore the regimes where the model cannot be solved analytically. Based on the numerical results, we argue that in most cases the behaviour of the model is better understood in terms of an effective coupling constant λ'=λM. For small M the model simplifies to one whose kernel is non-singular. This simplified model shows a peculiar peak structure in the eigenvalue distribution, with the number of peaks growing as the effective coupling is increased. We interpret this as a series of phase transitions as M approaches 3/2r.

Top-to-bottom serial analysis of faces in the left and the right cerebral hemispheres

The present study investigated hemispheric lateralization and the use of serial versus global processing of facial stimuli in a recognition task. The subjects were 19 male and 29 female undergraduate students. Identi-Kit faces which varied on four features (hair, eyes, mouth, and chin) were tachistoscopically presented. The accuracy of the subjects' responses were recorded. Analyses of variance suggested that subjects did not differ in use of inner or outer details, but did differ in use of upper and lower details. The data suggested a top-to-bottom order of processing for stimuli presented in both visual fields, with the most accurate recognition based on the hair, eyes, mouth, and chin, in that order.

Lateralization of pragmatic processsing : a visual half-field investigation of speech act processing

The current study utilized a priming paradigm in conjunction with a visual halffield presentation to determine if the right hemisphere contributes to pragmatic processing. Primes included conversational dialogues that either performed a speech act or did not. The targets identified the speech act and were presented to one of the two visual fields (lvf-RH or rvf-LH). It was hypothesized that the right visual field-left hemisphere (rvf-LH) would be more accurate and faster at identifying targets regardless of the script type that preceded it and the left visual field-right hemisphere (lvf-RH) would be significantly more accurate and faster at identifying targets when preceded by a script that performed the identified speech act. Results indicated that the lvf-RH was more accurate and faster at identifying a target regardless of the type of script that preceded it, while the rvf-LH was differentially affected by the type of script. / Department of Psychological Science

Localization and Proximity Detection in the Internet of Things Based on an Augmented UHF RFID System

In the "Internet of Things" (IoT), the things will be able to sense, communicate, and interact. They will also exchange data, information and knowledge, and locate themselves and other things that surround them. In order to be able to interact, the things need to recognize that they are in proximity of other things. It is anticipated that the most widespread components of the IoT will be passive radio frequency identification (RFID) tags because they are inexpensive and provide automatic identification. However, passive RFID tags are not capable of performing complex operations, such as proximity detection and localization, which will be required in future networks. In this thesis, we describe existing problems with current RFID systems and survey potential solutions for localization and proximity detection. Then we present a new RFID device called "Sense-a-Tag" (ST) that can passively detect and decode backscattered signals from tags in its proximity. There have already been an attempt to use this device for tracking. However, detailed analysis of the performance of the ST especially for proximity detection has not been performed yet. We show that when STs are added to a standard RFID system, the problems of proximity detection and localization with RFID tags can readily be solved. Then we applied ST-based system for identifying people and object interactions. The potential uses of ST as an augmented device for IoT applications are discussed in this thesis. Advantages and limitations of an ST based RFID system have been investigated in details for each application. Results obtained from real experiments illustrate that an ST-based RFID system is feasible for proximity detection applications. In addition, a special software is developed in C\# to process the data and run a localization algorithm based on proximity detection information. The same software has been used for tracking people's activity. Different scenarios have been considered in the experiments. We tried to consider majority of factors that might affect the accuracy in the experiments including: angle and distance between the reader/ST and tags, timing in sending queries, presence of human body, etc. The simulations based on real experiments and results illustrates that an ST-based RFID system can be a realistic solution for proximity detection and localization for Location Positioning systems (LPS) and activity monitoring in future IoT.
