This study was undertaken at the request of the Cache County Council of Child Health and Protection, who in cooperation with the Juvenile Court of District No. 1 beginning with 1933 planned specific undertakings to minimize delinquency. Life is a ceaseless struggle for existence. It enters every aspect of life and culture and in the long run the more fit tend toward the high places and the less fit are sifted and shaken to the low places. This struggle goes on in our physical environment, the less able take poor homes and the poor sections to live. In employment the less able take the brunt and often shift from one unskilled job to another. In intellectual attainments the less fit cannot compete and drop out of the race early. In the field of nervous stability and physical health the less able die young or carry chronic difficulties with them through life. They are the occupants of our sanitariums and mental hospitals. This struggle brings out the winner and the superior with honors and crushes the loser with discouragements. Is the difference all within man or could each one succeed if the right note were sounded to which he could respond? Does our society make the struggle too severe for some to surmount? To what extent on the other hand, does faulty economic and social organization bring into the ranks of the needy, physically and mentally fit people? What types of maladjustments are most pronounced among the underprivileged groups? An important part of the study has been concerned with the health situation. To find out the nature and extent of the health difficulties experts generously and without pay made physical examinations of thirty-five families. These families came to the FERA health center and received a complete medical examination. Dr. J. O. Heyward and Dentist Clark Haskins, with Miss Emma Willmore and Miss Anna Malmberg, FERA nurses assisting, spent five full evenings giving these examinations to 173 people. This service represents a very real contribution to the effort to clarify conditions in Logan among the dependent classes. The willingness of the three professions involved to render unpaid service of no small extent on a social problem of significance is once more in evidence.

Dunmore’s War was the last colonial war in America before the Revolution. This conflict was the culmination of nearly thirty years of intrigue and violence in the so-called “Western Waters” of the trans-Allegheny region of Virginia, which included the valleys of the Ohio River and its lower tributary system. This thesis traces the origins of the war, and suggests that, among other things, the provisions in the Royal Proclamation of 1763 for the westward extension of the Indian boundary line and soldier settlement contributed mightily to the instigation of the war between Virginia and the Shawnees. Indeed, Virginia’s former provincial soldiers took advantage of the waning authority of the royal government in the west to secure their bounty lands, at the expense of the Shawnees and their allies in the Ohio Valley. Matters reached a climax during the curious administration of Virginia’s last colonial governor, Lord Dunmore. Dunmore, who harbored his own western land ambitions, allied himself with the soldiers and land speculators, and instituted policies aimed at extending Virginia’s jurisdiction over the Ohio Valley and Kentucky against the directives of his superiors in London. Accordingly, the thesis examines the royal governor’s motivations, policies, and conduct in the events leading up to the conflict. Finally, the thesis contributes a fresh, complete narrative of the war itself, which has been lacking for some time in the field of Virginia History. / Master of Arts

The voluminous limnological literature contains few studies of mountain streams. Though there are a few papers on the benthic algae (see Budde 1928, Raabe 1951) only Pennak (1943) reports year-round quantitative data on the phytoplankton. Brinley (1950) gives some phytoplankton information in a summer study of streams in Rocky Mountain National Park.

The story of Presbyterianism begins, in general, with the story of Protestantism. Not many years after Luther's action in Wittenburg began a spiritual reformation, two men - Calvin and Knox- shared in the new form of Protestantism which was to come under the name of Presbyterianism. Largely by way of Scotland and England this denomination of Christianity moved into America early in the 17th century. When the United States government was formed officially in 1789, one man, John Witherspoon, was highly instrumental in the form adopted.

"Pasture is the natural food of all domesticated herbivore, especially the ruminant, and the only single feed upon which it can be maintained in health indefinitely."

B. A. Richeverry in his book, Land Drainage and Flood Protection, states that inadequate drainage causes: (1) a public health menace, (2) an animal health menace, (3) lower grade plant life, (4) inadequate soil aeration, (5) lower soil temperatures, (6) shallow root penetration and, therefore, plant suffering in late summer months from effects of drought, (7) poor soil texture and workability, (8) increased surface washing and erosion of land surface, and (9) alkali and saline conditions, other factors such as poorer roads and highways, decreased tax revenues, ets., might be added to this list. The advantages of aequate drainage are absence of these disadvantages. Many public as well as privae benefits are realised from land drainage.
