Risk Aversion and Adoption of Conservation Agriculture Practices in Eastern UgandaWeixler-Landis, Barry 03 July 2014 (has links)
Many poor farmers, especially in Africa, have not adopted recent farming innovations to improve their yields. One theory is that poor farmers are risk averse and therefore do not invest in high risk high return innovations and that risk averse farmers will only adopt larger innovations if they experience success with small ones. Risk preferences were measured in two districts in Uganda (Tororo and Kapchorwa) where adoption of agricultural innovations has been slow, and where a program is underway to encourage use of conservation agriculture practices (CAPs) to reduce soil erosion and sequester carbon. An ordered lottery selection was used to measure risk preferences and an ordered probit model was estimated. Thirty five percent of a random sample of 200 farmers in Tororo (and fifty three percent of 200 farmers in Kapchorwa) made lottery choices that implied severe or extreme risk aversion. However there was no indication that risk preferences correlate with willingness to adopt new technologies (such as CAPs). Neither wealth nor previous success with technology adoption were found to correlate with farmers' risk preferences. / Master of Science / CCRA-6 (Economic and Impact Analysis)

Shirley Jackson's legacy : a critical commentary on the literary receptionCohen, Gustavo Vargas January 2012 (has links)
Uma seleção de quatro contos compõe o corpus desta pesquisa, são eles ―The Intoxicated‖, ―The Daemon Lover‖, ―Like Mother Used to Make‖ e ―The Villager‖, todos publicados na seminal coleção The Lottery and Other Stories de 1948. / Shirley Jackson‘s alleged invisibility and status as a forgotten writer are investigated in this thesis. Thus, complaints of a shortage of critical assessment regarding her works were studied in order to determine how these detrimental labels actually reflect her recognition historically by specialized/academic critics, media and reading public. Instances of lively artistic and cultural activity stemming from her literature are offered as counterpoints that expose much of the incongruence that contaminates her literary historiography. The scope of this exploratory study spans a wide-ranging body of criticism about Jackson‘s works from the 1940s to the present. Among the aims of this thesis are the investigation of these disputable inconsistencies and the offering of insights into the potential factors that have caused them. Moreover, it tentatively proposes the critique that does not yet exist, that which places the very author at the center of the critical-source enterprise; in other words, one that uses Jackson‘s own fictional material as scientific-support and background against which to examine her fiction. A selection of four short stories compose the corpus of this research, namely ―The Intoxicated‖, ―The Daemon Lover‖, ―Like Mother Used to Make‖ and ―The Villager‖, all published in the cardinal 1948 short fiction collection The Lottery and Other Stories. Discussions of the restricted intertextual connections that binds the four stories are conducted so as to make conspicuous how pervasive and influential the essential common thematic elements spread all over her oeuvre can be, especially in what concerns the themes that form what is here called the Shirley Jackson Lore.

Hazard na akciových trzích: empirická studie Evropy / Gambling in Stock Markets: Empirical Evidence from EuropeVokatá, Petra January 2012 (has links)
Motivated by the recent evidence of investors' preference for stocks with lottery- type payoffs documented on the U.S. stock markets, I investigate preferences for stocks that appear to be like lotteries in Europe. Across 14 markets, lottery- type stocks, characterized by high idiosyncratic skewness, high idiosyncratic volatility and low price, underperform and exhibit a "lottery premium". Fur- thermore, preferences for lottery-type stocks can help to explain the puzzling negative relation between past idiosyncratic volatility and returns, which does not persist after controlling for past extreme positive returns. Examining the relation between national revenues from gambling and "lottery premium" I find that countries featuring higher gambling revenues also exhibit a higher "lottery premium". Overall, the results indicate that lottery preferences might impact investment decisions and stock prices. The demand for gambling: Empirical evidence from state-operated lotteries and football pools in SpainPérez Carcedo, Leví 13 January 2010 (has links)
There are several arguments why the economic analysis of gambling seems to be very interesting. Gambling is a very important economic industry from which either local or national governments obtain resources due to some sort of fiscal imposition on gambling participation. On the other hand, the consumption of gambling seems to violate the premises of economic theory (risk aversion, maximizing and rational conduct). The empirical literature on this field has tried to answer several questions that might be summarized as follows: Who does gamble? Why do people gamble? And, how do game features, such as the rules or the prize structure, affect the demand for gambling?
This thesis tries to shed more light on the questions identified above, focusing on the particular case of state-operated lotteries and football pools in Spain. Specifically, we are interested in examining what aspects drive gamblers' participation in Spanish lottery markets and spending on lotteries, focusing on network externalities in consumer spending on closely related lottery goods. Next, we study the demand for a particular game, paying attention to the factors that explain why individuals bet, especially, those that refer to the design of the game and the structure of prizes. Finally, the analysis of the main economic determinants of demand for gambling is extended to football pools as a particular form of sports gambling. In addition to these empirical exercises, this study contributes to the economics of gambling by briefly reviewing the theoretical work and empirical highlights from the previous analysis of the demand for lottery.
