Is it possible to get a low-cost airline to Karlstad Airport? / Är det möjligt att få ett lågkostnadsflyg till Karlstad Flygplats

<p>Vi valde ämnet som handlar om möjligheten att få ett lågkostnadsflygbolag opererande på Karlstad flygplats därför att det är en intressant fråga om regionen skulle gynnas av ett lågkostnadsflyg eller inte så väl som flygplatsens existens. På senare tid har det i media också ofta framkommit att flygplatsen har ekonomiska problem.</p><p>Idén till vårt syfte uppkom efter att ha läst rapporten som Handelskammaren i Värmland skrev angående vikten av flygförbindelser till och från Karlstad flygplats för regionen. I den rapporten framkom det att det var önskvärt med ett lågkostnadsflyg från Karlstad flygplats.</p><p>Frågan kring ett lågkostnadsflyg från Karlstad Flygplats presenteras genom användning av teorier för risk, uppdragsgivare- uppdragstagareproblemet och beslutstagande. Alla dessa områden är sammanhängande.</p><p>Vi intervjuade Göteborg/Säve-, Stockholm/Skavstas-, Jönköpings/Axamo- och Smaland/Växjöflygplats för att få information om aktuell situation på respektive flygplats med eller utan opererande lågkostnadsflyg. Frågorna som ställdes var av liknande karaktär, men det utgjordes en skillnad mellan dem, beroende om de tillhörde gruppen som redan har lågkostnadsflyg eller om de önskar ha ett lågkostnadsflyg.</p><p>Vi fann likheter mellan flygplatserna och de ledandes uppfattning i frågan om lågkostnadsflyg. Det visade sig även att det för flygplatsen är kostsamt att ha ett lågkostnadsflyg opererande, men att det däremot är fördelaktigt för regionen. Utöver det bör risken delas mellan fler än en intressent. För att bli framgångsrik måste man göra uppoffringar och lätta på attityden till risk hos intressenterna.</p> / <p>We chose our topic, regarding the possibility to get a low-cost airline operating at Karlstad airport, because it is an interesting question whether the region could benefit from a low cost airline or not as well as the existence of the airport. In this report it appeared that it was desirable with a low-cost airline at Karlstad airport.</p><p>This topic is presented by applying theories about an interested party model, risk, agency theory, decision making and growth. All these areas are somehow connected.</p><p>We interviewed persons in managing positions at Göteborg/Säve, Stockholm/Skavsta, Jönköping/Axamo and Smaland/Växjö airport, who gave information about the actual situation at their airport respectively. The first two airports have operating low-cost airlines and the last two have not. We also interview partners in Värmland to get their view of the situation at Karlstad airport. The questions were roughly the same, with a difference made if they belonged to the group that has a low-cost airline or if they belonged to the group without a low-cost airline.</p><p>We found that there are similarities between the airports. And it turned out that having a low-cost airline operating at an airport is a costly business for the airport, but it seems to be advantageous for the region. And that the risk ought to be diversified between more than one interested parties. In order to be successful you have to make sacrifices and lighten up all parties’ attitudes to risk.</p>

Strategic Alliances : Implications for Low Cost Airlines

After the deregulation of the airline industry new actors entered the market and among them were the low-cost airlines. These actors are not involved in the same traditional airline alliance used by the traditional airlines to strengthen their position on the market. Little research has been made regarding the benefits for low-cost airlines to engage in strategic alliances. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate if low-cost airlines benefit from engaging in strategic alliances or collaborations, and identify possible alliance configurations. To fulfill the purpose we have used a qualitative method and case studies. Interviews with respondents from two low-cost airlines as well as an airline industry field expert were used to gather information about the thesis subject. We have concluded that the low-cost airlines in this study benefit from engaging in strategic alliances. The low-cost airlines are using vertical as well as horizontal alliances principally to gain cost-reduction or efficiency benefits. Both cases were against traditional airline alliances due to the high costs involved, and the fact that they do not share the same motives for alliances.

Blue skies or dark clouds for the pilots and flight attendants? : Loyalty, self-loyalty, commitment and motivation in the flight industry

While worldwide the flight industry was increasing in the last decade, little is known about the working environment of pilots and flight attendants. This paper aims to develop a deeper understanding based on the theories of loyalty, self-loyalty, commitment, and motivation for pilots and flight attendants in the low-cost segment and the carrier segment in the flight industry. A qualitative study with a semi-structured interview is provided. In total, three pilots and three flight attendants who work for a low-cost airline and carrier airlines from all over the world were interviewed. The findings show that a differentiation between before the COVID 19 pandemic and during COVID 19 has to be made. Before COVID 19, pilots were almost satisfied with their working conditions whereas flight attendants felt their working conditions could have been improved in terms of better wages. However, during the COVID 19 time, both the flight attendants and pilots are afraid of losing their job. Due to COVID 19, many flights were cancelled which might have an impact on the flight industry in the future. My studies open up possibilities for new research in the future about the transformation of the flight industry after COVID 19.

Locating the Effects of Emotional and Aesthetic Labor on Performance Through the Lens of Flight Attendants : —An investigative qualitative study of a low-cost and a premium airline

This research implemented a multiple case study design to investigate the effects of aesthetic and emotional labor in the premium airline context of Emirates, in comparison to the low-cost airline context of easyJet. This was achieved through the conduct of interviews with flight attendants from each airline as they are the frontline employees who are mostly concerned with the implementation of these standards. Even before the recruitment process employees are introduced to the requirements of aesthetic and emotional labor as airlines aim to find those who will best ‘fit’ their organizational culture, and that through training they will be even more equipped to represent the company during their interactions with customers. Thus, flight attendants are regarded as a strategic resource that contributes to the competitive advantage and organizational performance of airlines. Taking into consideration that aesthetic and emotional labor standards define the very nature of flight attendants’ job and that their performance determines the organization’s performance, the potential effects on their performance cannot be disregarded. The main themes that were yielded through the thematic analysis of the empirical findings were found to be parallel to some of the performance factors in Herzberg’s two-factor theory of motivation, while aesthetic and emotional labor were located as components within identified themes. Thus, this provided us with a general theoretical framework that allowed us to further discuss our findings in connection to relevant theory. Results showed that the different operational business models as well as the different cultures of each airline mostly contributed to the differences that were found in regard to the implementation of standards between the two contexts. Aesthetic labor standards were found to have a stronger effect on employees’ performance in the case of Emirates due to the fact their supervision was stricter. In both cases, aesthetic labor standards were not found to have an effect on employees' performance when it comes to their interaction with customers. While easyJet was found to receive a more diverse training when it comes to interaction with customers, in both cases emotional labor standards were found to have an overall positive link to employees’ performance not only when it comes to interaction with customers but also when it comes to dealing with co-workers, managers and the demands of the job in general. However, the aspect of personality was found to be a moderating factor influencing employees’ understanding and following of standards. It should be noted that the results of this research cannot be generalized. Further investigation across different contexts and airlines is suggested so as to conclude whether the results are representative of a specific context.

The work is focused on appearance of multinational companies in the air transport or more precisely on analysis of strategic airline alliances in term of its multinational character. Analysis of two multinational airlines, members of two different strategic airline alliances and their confrontation on the basis of services provided to customers is the principal aim of this work. Two airlines of world signification and establishing members of two different alliances, French Air France and German Lufthansa, were chosen for this work. These two airlines were advises in three fields: destination offer, fleet and general services provided to customers.

Nízkonákladová letecká přeprava v Evropě a ověření fungování strategie modrého oceánu / European Low-cost Air Transport and the Verification of the Blue Ocean Stategy

This thesis tries to prove a functioning of the Blue Ocean Strategy on the case of Europen low-cost air transport. Through the Blue Ocean Strategy´s Analytical Tools and Frameworks, specifically with the help of the Strategy Canvas, the Four Actions Framework and the Eliminate-Reduce-Raise-Create Grid, it is proven that the strategy introduced by the airline Ryanair in the nineties of the twentieth century corresponds to the Blue Ocean Strategy. Through the same Analytical Tools and Frameworks and a comparison of business models of three low-cost airlines also the time validity of the Blue Ocean Strategy is proven in this case. The functioning of the Blue Ocean Strategy on the case of European low-cost air transport was verified.

My Master thesis focuses on the design of the marketing strategy of a low-cost airline SparrowJet. The first chapter of the theoretical parts contains the required basics of theoretical information necessary to develop a marketing plan. In the second chapter is an analysis of the air transportation market with an emphasis on the low-cost segment. The final chapter of the theoretical part is dedicated to the marketing mix in the transportation. The practical part of my thesis begins with the situation analysis, which includes: the PEST analysis, Porters five forces analysis, a competition analysis and a customer analysis. My work is concluded with a complete proposal of a marketing strategy for the airline, including both basic strategy of S-T-P and a marketing mix.
