Everything Under My Control: CEO Characteristics and the Evaluation of Middle Manager Performance in Small and Medium-Sized FirmsHaas, Nora, Speckbacher, Gerhard 05 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Studies of small and medium-sized enterprises have provided evidence
that CEOs of such firms can have a dominating influence on firm activities. Drawing
on upper echelons theory, we analyze the influence of CEO personality (CEO internal
locus of control), CEO ownership and CEO education on the evaluation of middle
manager performance. In line with our expectations, we find evidence for a direct
effect of CEO ownership (negative) and CEO education (positive) on the use of
objective performance evaluations and for a direct effect of the CEO's internal locus
of control on the use of subjective performance evaluations. Moreover, we provide
evidence for a moderating role of both CEO ownership and education with respect to the influence of the CEO's locus of control on the use of subjective evaluations.
We use a sample of 247 small and medium-sized manufacturing firms to test our hypotheses.

Although predicted by many experts, the decline of religion did not occur with modern
society. Instead, religiosity is in full swing, but performing in a new shape, less
institutionalized, more individualized, subjective, fluid and fragmented, crossing through and
blending in several other fields, including tourism. Given this scenario, the objective of this
study is to understand, by through consumption habits/behaviour, how evangelical tourism in
the Holy Land can be configured as a modern search of tradition, conforming to a (post)
modern experience of contemporary religiosity, examining their meanings for those who are
directly or indirectly involved with this activity. This symbolic consumption by evangelicals
through the caravans to the Holy Land revealed it is not only a modern way for evangelicals
to public space, but also a way to (re) activate various Jewish and Christian traditions, giving
them a new meaning in accordance with the spirit of this age.

Knowledge Transfer by Austrian Banks to the Transition Economies of Central, Eastern and South Eastern EuropeHaiss, Peter, Schellander, Elisabeth January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Since the opening of the Central, Eastern and South Eastern European (CESEE) banking market, foreign banks, have started to invest in the financial sector of emerging economies. Economic research highlights that foreign banks have brought advanced technology, improved management expertise, upgraded risk management techniques and generally more efficient and competitive banking practices into CESEE countries (Clarke, Cull, Peria and Sànchez, 2002; Eller, Haiss and Steiner, 2006). However, there is hardly evidence about how this large-scale knowledge transfer has been achieved and what knowledge has actually been transferred. This paper intends to fill this gap. Two in-depth case studies of bank acquisitions by Austrian banks in CESEE give insight into the methods and content of knowledge transfer within the post-acquisition integration. A questionnaire sent out to CESEE subsidiaries of Austrian banks additionally provides information on the topic. The results show that knowledge transfer mainly occurs in international teams and during international meetings, trainings and development programs and that it is supported by information and communication technologies. Results further show that the content, methods and magnitude of knowledge transfer efforts change along the stages of post-acquisition integration. (author's abstract)

Regulatory Compensation Limits and Business Performance - Evidence from the National Football LeaguePetutschnig, Matthias January 2017 (has links) (PDF)
Executives' compensation has been on the forefront of the public and political debate since
the recent financial crisis. One of the measures publicly discussed is a general upper
boundary to top management compensation packages ("salary cap", "maximum wage").
While such measures are novelties to the corporate world, the North American major sports
leagues have been using maximum compensation regulations for decades. This paper
exploits the 23-year experience with salary cap regulations from the National Football
League (NFL). The results show a significant negative relation between the success of NFL
teams and the amount of the net (after-tax) salary cap represented by the personal income
tax rate of the teams' home states. A team from California (highest average tax rate) wins
2.256 games less per year and has an 11% reduced probability of making the playoffs than
a team located in a no-tax state such as Florida or Texas. The paper contributes to and
informs the ongoing public and political debate regarding the regulation of executive
compensation, and its effects on the performance of the regulated entities. / Series: WU International Taxation Research Paper Series

SYNTHESIS AND BIOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF CCR5 ANTAGONISTS AS NOVEL ANTI-PROSTATE CANCER AGENTSAdams, Joanna Lee 01 January 2007 (has links)
The chemokine receptor CCR5 has been implicated in the pathogenesis of prostate cancer (PCa). A novel series of piperazine derivatives have been designed and synthesized as CCR5 antagonists and their activity as inhibitors of PCa cell lines proliferation was explored. A lead compound has been identified which induced 100% inhibition of PCa cell proliferation at micromolar concentrations. Anibamine, the only natural product CCR5 antagonist, was also examined for its anti-proliferative activity and was found to inhibit proliferation of PCa cells at micromolar concentrations as well. The expression of RANTES mRNA was observed in DU-145, M12 and P69 cells via RT-PCR, while the expression of CCR5 mRNA was observed only in M12 cells. A CHO-CCR5 stable cell line was prepared for the CCR5 ligand competition binding assays. Both anibamine and the newly identified lead compound will serve as leads in the development of novel CCR5 antagonists as anti-prostate cancer agents.
