Vivere sul serio: Eduardo De Filippo and the Art of Life

Gargiulo, Jennifer January 2006 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / This thesis offers the first English translation of Eduardo De Filippo’s last play, Gli esami non finiscono mai (1973). It analyzes the play in the context of the dramatist’s career and describes the philosophical shift that took place in Eduardo’s dialectic as he progressed from a post-war, neorealist drama like Napoli milionaria! toward the existential reflections present in his last play. Unlike previous studies, this work concentrates on Eduardo’s philosophical journey from neorealism to existential query and identifies the factors that influenced his thinking process. To this end, I have evaluated the plays most relevant to the development of his philosophy and the socio-political context in which they were written. The influence of the Neapolitan traditional dialect theater, along with that of Luigi Pirandello, his American contemporaries, Arthur Miller and Eugene O’Neill, and William Shakespeare, is also examined. Important social issues that directly affected the author, such as the struggle in Italy for the legalization of divorce and the plight of children born out of wedlock, are highlighted to illustrate how they contributed to the disillusionment and pessimism present in Eduardo’s last play. From the rather hopeful ending of Napoli milionaria! Eduardo was reduced at the end of his life to sheer desperation in Gli esami non finiscono mai. Italy had changed but it had not moved on. By focusing on the playwright’s final play, this thesis offers a new perspective on a twentieth century dramatist who is much more complex than is commonly acknowledged. De Filippo is revealed as a dramatist who transcended the Neapolitan comic theatrical traditions he sprang from and created a theater of political and social engagement that endures today.

Adaptive MC-CDMA Receiver with Diagonal Loading Linearly Constrained RLS Algorithm for MAI Suppression.

Yang, Shin-Cing 03 September 2005 (has links)
There are many novel techniques have been invented to provide high-data rate with high quality communication services for future wireless communications systems. Recently, a novel digital modulation technology for multiple accesses, referred to as the Multi-Carrier Code Division Multiple Access (MC-CDMA), has been proposed to support high data rate transmission; it is based on the combination of CDMA and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). The MC-CDMA has been shown to be an effective technique for combating multipath fading. With MC-CDMA system, a user¡¦s spreading code can be modulated on separate subcarriers, undergo frequency-flat fading channel and offers frequency diversity advantage. But in a multi-user environment, othogonality among spreading codes is severely distorted due to multipath delay spread, such that the system capacity will be limited by the multiple access interferences (MAI). Similar situations exist due to possible narrowband interference (NBI) from other systems. Effective interference reduction will render system capacity to increase, which means interference suppression techniques are vital in improving overall system performance. In this thesis, we propose a new linearly constrained recursive least square algorithm, with diagonal loading approach, referred to as the DL-LC RLS algorithms, to further improve the system performance. The proposed diagonal loading RLS algorithm is different from conventional diagonal loading RLS algorithm, in which the diagonal loading was used to improve the robustness to pointing errors in beamforming problem. However, in this thesis, the diagonal loading approach could be used to alleviate the effect due to multiple access interference (MAI), such that under certain circumstances, better performance could be achieved. Basically, in the proposed algorithm, the power of interference plus noise of received signal will be estimated and subtracted from the diagonal terms of the autocorrelation matrix of received signal. After that instead of using the original autocorrelation matrix, the new correlation matrix, with subtracting power related to the interference plus noise, will be involved during the adaptation processes for updating the weights of the multi-user detector. Finally, computer simulation results, in terms of bit error rate, are used to demonstrate the merits of the proposed scheme compared with the conventional RLS algorithm approach without using the diagonal approaches.

Rehabilitation Of Malatya Narli No: 7 Railroad Tunnel

Divleli, Baris 01 September 2004 (has links) (PDF)
In thesis thesis, studies associated with the rehabilitation of the Malatya-Narli No: 7 Railroad Tunnel are presented. The rehabilitation work includes cleaning of two collapses and stopping of deformations occurring in the tunnel as well as characterizing the rock-mass by evaluating the cores obtained from 67 drill holes. Due to two collapses ocurred in the tunnel a large sinkhole (15x10x20 meters) was developed at the surface and the tunnel closed to train traffic for 10 months (September, 2002-July, 2003) covering the initiation of Iraq War. Originally, the tunnel had been opened into the paleo-landslide material in 1930. The rock-mass surrounding the tunnel consists of limestones, metavolcanics, and schists. Although the main problem in the tunnel is the reduced tunnel span caused by displacements triggerred by underground water, poor rock mass and time dependent deformations, from engineering point of view the other problems can be sited as collapses occurred in the tunnel, sinkhole devoloped at the surface and unstable sections existing in the tunnel. During the field studies, 15 deformation monitoring stations were installed aimed at determining the deviation from tunnel alignment. In order to provide stability of the tunnel Self Drilling Anchors (Mai bolts) were installed systematically around the tunnel. The details of the rock reinforcement design was presented in this thesis.
