Accelerated testing of tidal turbine main bearing in a full scale nacelle test rig

Tidal Energy is one of the growing renewable energy technologies that is aimed at tackling global energy challenges. The Horizontal Axis Tidal Turbine (HATT) is an in-stream Tidal Energy Converter (TEC) which extracts kinetic energy from tidal flows. These tidal turbines face many reliability challenges due to their complexity, harsh operating environment and low accessibility. One of the component contributing significantly to the reliability of a TEC is the bearing supporting the rotating shaft within the nacelle. The reliability assessment of this component is essential during the design process and before their eventual deployments. This work is describes shaft bearing reliability assessment procedures. In recent years, the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult’s National Renewable Energy Centre has developed a dedicated multi axis test facility for full scale testing of tidal turbine nacelles and components (i.e. Nautilus). This work presents a methodology for testing tidal turbine shaft bearings in a representative manner in the full scale nacelle test rig, Nautilus. Two aspects are considered, namely the damage assessment and the damage replication in an accelerated manner. The damage assessment process considers the global loading on the shaft bearing and a Rigid Dynamics (RD) model has been applied to identify the local bearing loads. Local loads are converted to stress enabling the identification of stress-life relationship and bearing damage. The damage replication process is aimed to evaluate the 20 year damage and the Acceleration by Phase-shift (AbP) method has been developed to accelerate the cumulative damage. The AbP method enables the assessment of performance characteristics of shaft bearings in a laboratory environment, reducing failure rates, validate performance in a cost effective manner by reduced testing times. Within this work, novel processes for shaft bearing reliability assessments and demonstration are suggested and it concludes with the presentation of a recommended test plan for carrying out accelerated tests on a full scale bearing.

Coordination chemistry of Sb (III) and Sb (V) cations

The coordination chemistry of antimony(III) and antimony(V) have been investigated to reveal fundamental structural and electronic features. The limited scope of known cationic antimony(V) complexes was greatly expanded, including the first examples of pnictogen(V) trications. The systematic nature of these investigations led to the observation of redox chemistry, determined to be the result of reductive elimination of chlorobenzene and biphenyl from an antimony center. The reactivity of [Ph2Sb(OPyrMe)4][OTf]3 was investigated and it was found that the OPyrMe ligands are sufficiently labile to perform ligand substitution chemistry. However, when exposed to phosphines, ligand-centered reactivity prevails and phosphonium salts of the form [R3P(2-4-methylpyridine)][OTf] which may be useful reagents in the field of medicinal chemistry and drug design. While attempts were made to synthesise antimony(V) tetra- and penta- cations have been unsuccessful, the methodologies reported here will serve as a foundation to future endeavors. / Graduate / 2019-08-31

Cultural Representations of the One-child Policy in Chinese Literature and Film since 1978

This dissertation focuses on the cultural representations of the one-child policy ever since 1978. The artistic discourses about the one-child policy provide a fantastic space to explore China’s post-socialist society and contending ideologies. It also sheds light on the intricate relation between aesthetics and politics and these among the state, family and individual. Moreover, as discourses, artistic narratives and images also participate in the redefining of reproduction/one-child policy. Therefore, inquiries into the interaction between aesthetics and politics enrich our understanding of how reproductive ideals are constructed, negotiated and transformed. This dissertation can be divided into five parts. In the introduction part, I introduce issues related to the one-child policy, materials which I use and my main approaches to interpret them. Chapter Two explores how post-1978 family planning films and novel envision the ideal reproductive lives of peasants through the construction of ideal reproductive subjects, especially ideal female models. These artistic works also show changed representations of the ideal role models. Chapter Three looks into the patriarchal reproductive subject in Mo Yan’s Frog which centers on the conflict between state power and traditional male-centric reproductive culture. Although there are ambiguities, the novel demonstrates that the state has failed to transform peasants’ traditional reproductive ideas. Chapter Four deals with women’s exploration of reproduction from the 1980s on. The writings of some female authors demonstrate a consciousness of independent female reproductive desire. In some works, we can even see the emergence of a new kind of female reproductive privacy. In these works, reproduction becomes the female protagonists’ personal, private matter and women’s subjectivity is seen in their ability to make reproductive decisions according to their own interests. In the Coda, I talk about my future research plans. Overall, in this dissertation, I trace the political, economic, cultural, and technical factors that contribute to the gradual emergence of pluralism in reproductive ideas and practices. My dissertation demonstrates the dynamic interaction among different forces affecting reproduction, one of the most strictly controlled realms in Chinese life. Although reproduction is still mainly dictated by the state current two-child policy, a push towards greater individual autonomy is starting to gain momentum. / 10000-01-01

Presenting ASU's Ethos: Old Main as a Seat of Argument

abstract: Scholarship on the rhetoric of place and space provides ample precedent for the study of structures as rhetorical texts; real and imagined places which convey meaning or memory, particularly monuments, memorials, and museums have been extensively studied, but loci of identity and history in institutions of higher education are under- examined. The following analysis of Arizona State University's Old Main building seeks to fill a gap in the study of place and space. As an entity which produces its own powerful discourses, Arizona State University expresses its historicity and institutional goals through varied and numerous media, but Old Main is one of the most critical, for the structure acts as an ethical proof in ASU's argument for its character, endurance, and worth. This examination addresses how ASU's ethos is articulated through the experiences of Old Main's past and current users, the instructional historical texts and artifacts displayed in the structure, the way that the building is mediated by ASU discourses, and the agency of the edifice itself. This work endeavors to answer Henri Lefebvre's call to improve widespread understanding of spaces as texts and their dialogue with users, and builds on the work of Carol Blair, Richard P. Dober, Diane Favro, and Bruno Latour, as well as that of Henri Lefebvre. Protoplanetary Disks in ρ Ophiuchus as Seen from ALMA

We present a high angular resolution (similar to 0 ''.2), high-sensitivity (sigma similar to 0.2 mJy) survey of the 870 mu m continuum emission from the circumstellar material around 49 pre-main-sequence stars in the rho Ophiuchus molecular cloud. Because most millimeter instruments have resided in the northern hemisphere, this represents the largest high-resolution, millimeter-wave survey of the circumstellar disk content of this cloud. Our survey of 49 systems comprises 63 stars; we detect disks associated with 29 single sources, 11 binaries, 3 triple systems, and 4 transition disks. We present flux and radius distributions for these systems; in particular, this is the first presentation of a reasonably complete probability distribution of disk radii at millimeter wavelengths. We also compare the flux distribution of these protoplanetary disks with that of the disk population of the Taurus-Auriga molecular cloud. We find that disks in binaries are both significantly smaller and have much less flux than their counterparts around isolated stars. We compute truncation calculations on our binary sources and find that these disks are too small to have been affected by tidal truncation and posit some explanations for this. Lastly, our survey found three candidate gapped disks, one of which is a newly identified transition disk with no signature of a dip in infrared excess in extant observations.
