This thesis focuses on the detection of marble sculpture forgery made of cultured marble. Cultured marble is a mixture of marble dust, polyester and accelerators. Thus chemical analysis of cultured marble would give declined levels of calcium when compared to authentic sculptures. Since sample removal is a problem when dealing with archaeological heritage, the instrument used was portable X-Ray Fluorescence device which provides in situ analysis of the samples. Device has been used to analyze six authentic and four forgery sculptures. In 1909 the composer Gustav Mahler and the sculptor Auguste Rodin, arguably the greatest composer and the greatest sculptor of the time, met in Paris. Both were transitional figures in their respective fields, representing the end of an era in their creative work. Their respective legacies nevertheless also inaugurated new ideas and inspired younger composers and sculptors. Rodin sculpted two portraits of Mahler, one of which — in pure white marble — is the main focus of the article. The refinement and beauty of this work is different from Rodin's male portraits in that the head is stylised like many of his female portraits, an ambiguity compounded by the fact that Alma Mahler, the composer's wife, wrote in her memoirs that Rodin fell in love with his model during the sittings. An understanding of the marble bust calls for an analysis of the life and work of the composer, fraught with ambiguities - as reflected in that superb portrait.

Η εκπόνηση της παρούσας εργασίας, αποσκοπεί στην πετρογραφική μελέτη των πετρωμάτων του όρους Φαλακρού του νομού Δράμας και κυρίως των κοιτασμάτων μαρμάρου που εξορύσσονται σε διάφορες περιοχές του όρους. Από κάθε περιοχή επιλέχθηκαν οι πιο χαρακτηριστικοί εμπορικοί τύποι. Επίσης, εξετάζονται οι πετρογραφικές και φυσικομηχανικές ιδιότητες ανθρακικών πετρωμάτων που εμφανίζονται σε περιοχές των νομών Δράμας και Σερρών, όπου θα εξελιχθούν σε λατομικούς χώρους. / The purpose of this thesis is the petrographical and mechanical study of mount Falakro's rocks and specially of the marbles of different areas og this region, in order to be used as quarries.
