A Historical Analysis of Women Student Activities during the Inter War Years 1918 -1941Ryan, Daniel Martin 01 December 2014 (has links)
The study of women in higher education has been compartmentalized from the overall history of higher education. Educational historians continue to influence future discovery on the higher education of women by continuing to reinforce the master narrative of women in history. Acknowledging and confronting the master narrative within the history of higher education provides a useful endeavor by uncovering a deeper understanding of the history of the United States and educational systems. The challenge of continuing to be open to new perspectives of history will allow educators, policymakers and the general public to contribute to a better understanding about how education contributes in the journey for discovery.

EVALUATING MASTER GRAZE AS A FORAGE SOURCE IN LACTATING DAIRY COWS RATIONSSalamone, Ashley Marie 01 August 2012 (has links)
The effects of feeding Master Graze (MG) on dairy cows productivity and nutrient digestibility were evaluated in experiment 1. Sixteen cows were divided into 4 groups and fed treatment diets for 4 consecutive periods. Cows on the control diet were fed a diet with corn silage and alfalfa hay as forage source (1:1; DM basis). For treatment groups, the MG substituted the forage mix at 16, 33 and 50%. The feeding of MG at the three tested levels had no effects on feed intake, milk production or milk composition. The apparent digestibility of DM, OM, NDF and CP were higher in cows fed the MG. In experiment 2, the effects of maturity and preservation method on MG nutrient composition and digestibility were evaluated. The MG was harvested at 3 maturity levels and then preserved using oven-dried, ensiled, or freeze dried. In general, the MG digestibility and nutritional quality was higher in the first cut and with the freeze dried preservation method.

Grain refinement in aluminium containing magnesium alloysJoshi, Utsavi Mukeshbhai January 2016 (has links)
The novel grain refiners developed in this research could be broadly classified into borides and carbides. The motive behind choosing MgB2, AlB2 and their master alloys Mg-MgB2 and Mg-AlB2 as the grain refiners was driven by the crystallographic matching of the hexagonal borides with the magnesium crystal structure. Apart from this lightweight borides, denser borides such as CrB and WB have also shown excellent grain refinement in AZ91, AM50 and AZ31 alloys. It is suggested that the grain refinement effect in the magnesium alloys could be improved through a combined addition of bismuth along with the boride. The carbon based grain refiners were also explored as they are well-established for the grain refinement of aluminium containing magnesium alloys. The new carbon based grain refiners identified through this research are B4C, Mg-B4C, Mg-3Ti-1C. Magnesium matrix was chosen for the development of each of these master alloys to eliminate any impurity contamination during the grain refiner addition to the magnesium melt. The pressureless melt infiltration techniques was involved in the development of Mg-MgB2, Mg-AlB2 and Mg-B4C while, the ‘halide salt route’ was adopted for producing Mg-3Ti-1C master alloys. The application of ultrasonic cavitation for the development of a new Al-1.5B-2C master alloy was shown to be effective for a homogenous distribution of the intermetallic phases in the form of Al3BC. The potential heterogeneous nucleating sites proposed in the commercial aluminium containing magnesium alloys are MgB2 for Mg-MgB2 master alloy; Mg1-xAlxB2 (0.10 < x < 0.18) for AlB2 grain refiner; MgB2C2 for B4C grain refiner; CrB and WB for their individual powder additions respectively; Ti2AlC for Mg-3Ti-1C master alloy; Al3BC and Al4C3 for the Al-1.5B-2C master alloy.

Therapists who practice mindfulness meditation : implications for therapyAlvarez de Lorenzana, John W. 11 1900 (has links)
In the past decade the healing potential of mindfulness and its practice has gained widespread recognition across various health disciplines and institutions, especially mental health. Past and current research on mindfulness interventions have focused almost exclusively on the beneficial effects for clients. However, there is a serious shortage of research on how mindfulness practice influences therapists and their work. The current study looked specifically at how the influence of mindfulness meditation (MM) was experienced by therapists in the context of their work.
An interpretive description methodology was used to guide the research process. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with six therapists who practiced MM regularly. A thematic analysis of interview transcripts highlighted commonalities and differences among participants’ perceptions of the influence of MM on their work. Eleven themes emerged from the data analysis. Thematic findings were considered in relation to key issues in psychotherapy, master therapist traits and other contemporary qualitative research addressing the influence of MM on practitioners. The results are discussed with an emphasis on the practical implications for future research, therapist training and clinical practice. / Education, Faculty of / Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS), Department of / Graduate

Data Quality Metrics / Data Quality MetricsSýkorová, Veronika January 2008 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to prove measurability of the Data Quality which is a relatively subjective measure and thus is difficult to measure. In doing this various aspects of measuring the quality of data are analyzed and a Complex Data Quality Monitoring System is introduced with the aim to provide a concept for measuring/monitoring the overall Data Quality in an organization. The system is built on a metrics hierarchy decomposed into particular detailed metrics, dimensions enabling multidimensional analyses of the metrics, and processes being measured by the metrics. The first part of the thesis (Chapter 2 and Chapter 3) is focused on dealing with Data Quality, i.e. provides various definitions of Data Quality, gives reasoning for the importance of Data Quality in a company, and presents some of the most common tools and solutions that target to managing Data Quality in an organization. The second part of the thesis (Chapter 4 and Chapter 5) builds on the previous part and leads into measuring Data Quality using metrics, i.e. contains definition and purpose of Data Quality Metrics, places them into the multidimensional context (dimensions, hierarchies) and states five possible decompositions of Data Quality metrics into detail. The third part of the thesis (Chapter 6) contains the proposed Complex Data Quality Monitoring System including description of Data Quality Management related dimensions and processes, and most importantly detailed definition of bottom-level metrics used for calculation of the overall Data Quality.

Performance trends of seasoned Two Oceans Ultramarathon runnersNoll, Helena 17 February 2021 (has links)
Background: Endurance running is known to be a prevalent sport, due to well-understood health benefits. Ultramarathon running, particularly in master athletes, has been increasingly popular. Various parameters of an individual's ability to participate in numerous such events have been explored. The performance trends of such seasoned runners have been of interest to identify trends that could influence participation and running career longevity. Aim To identify performance trends of seasoned ultramarathon runners across their Two Oceans Ultramarathon running careers. Specific Objectives The specific objectives were to 1) describe the profile of seasoned ultramarathon runners who have completed 20 or more Two Oceans Ultramarathon races, including sex, number of ultramarathons completed, medal category of peak performance and age at debut Two Oceans Ultramarathon; 2) to determine average performance, peak performance, worst performance and the pattern of improvement or decline in performance in seasoned ultramarathon runners over 20 years of race participation; 3) to determine differences in factors that may influence performance trends, such as sex, number of ultramarathons completed, medal category of peak performance and age at debut Two Oceans Ultramarathon; and 4) to determine the variation in ultramarathon performance based on the sex, number of ultramarathons completed, medal category of peak performance and age at debut Two Oceans Ultramarathon. Methods Data from 625 runners who completed 20 or more Two Oceans Ultramarathons were extracted from a publicly available website (www.twooceansmarathon.org). Finish times across their running careers were used to establish average race speeds, peak and worst performances, changes in performance over time, and coefficients of variation in performance. Groups were compared according to a) sex, b) number of Two Oceans Ultramarathons completed (20 or more than 20), c) age category of debut race, and d) medal category of peak performance. Results The finishing times and race speed results showed that males ran significantly faster than females across their 20 year Two Oceans Ultramarathon running careers (p=0.00001). Runners who completed more than 20 races had faster finishing times and race paces than those who ran 20 Two Oceans Ultramarathons (p=0.00001). When performances of the participants were analysed according to age categories, the youngest age group, namely 16-19, had the fastest average finishing times across 20 years of racing (p=0.00002). Peak and worst performances showed that best personal efforts were attained in the first quarter of the Two Oceans Ultramarathon career, and worst race performances toward the end of these running careers. It was observed that as running careers progressed over time, the groups compared showed a pattern of performance convergence as differences in finishing times and running speeds decreased. Discussion and Conclusion The findings of this study suggest that a decline in performance over time is a natural and inevitable progression of a running career. Peak performances are usually acquired within the first few years of running careers. Participation trends as well as improved performances of master runners has shown that advanced age may be favourable in successful long-term ultramarathon running. This study identified a unique cohort of athletes who have consistently maintained ultramarathon running for 20 or more years. There is an opportunity for more detailed investigation of factors contributing to the longevity of their running careers, with the goal of promoting continuity in endurance running participation and physical activity at large.

Optimal versus naive diversification : do different loss functions improve portfolio choice? / Optimal vs. naive diversification : do different loss functions improve portfolio choice? / Do different loss functions improve portfolio choice?Ramesh, Dhruv. January 2019 (has links)
Thesis: M. Fin., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, Master of Finance Program, 2019 / Cataloged from PDF version of thesis. / Includes bibliographical references (page 55). / I estimate the out-of-sample performance of the equal weight, minimum variance and mean-variance model portfolios in different settings. In each setting, I vary the loss function used when estimating returns and covariances, length of the estimation window, and number of factors used in our estimation model. I find that when measuring performance by Sharpe ratio, choice of loss function strongly influences whether the mean-variance model portfolio outperforms the equal weight or minimum variance portfolio, and that the optimal loss function depends on the length of the estimation window and the dimension of the return model. It appears that we don't gain much by using more factors. The 3-factor model does a pretty good job based on Sharpe ratio, and the results are consistently the best for MVO(10). With more factors, it seems clear that we need longer estimation windows, but even then we do not gain anything in terms of Sharpe Ratio. However, when measuring performance by the certainty-equivalent return, I find that the mean-variance model portfolio does not outperform the minimum variance portfolio or the equal weight portfolio in any setting. This suggests that choosing a loss function carefully is imperative to managing estimation errors and that an investor's utility preferences and attitude towards risk should be taken into account when choosing a measure of performance. / by Dhruv Ramesh. / M.
