Brännlund, Hector January 2022 (has links)
This essay explores the magazine covers of Hemmets Journal between the years of 1921 and 1990. The first issue of the magazine was released one hundred years ago. The aim of the study is to examine how the motives have changed during the years in composition, color and text. The methods applied to this essay are formal analysis. Heinrich Wölfflin ́s set of five pairs of opposed visual concepts help distinguish when the clearest breakingpoints of the magazine covers occur. A style analysis is applied to the breakingpoints to examine if the contemporary structure of the society is depicted in the magazine covers. The results show for instance that you can spot the society in different ways in the magazine covers depending on what year it is and the most representative motive is women.

Du Plessis, Liezl January 2009 (has links)
The wide variety of magazines in the South African market and the economic relapse that has been experienc,e d worldwide has given rise to the increasing competition for higher circulation figures and advertising income. This phenomenon especially occurs between publications competing for the same target audience, such as the women's magazines SARIE and rooi rose, competitors over many years in the Afrikaans magazine market. Magazine covers play a critical role in this rivalry due to the direct connection between the popularity of the cover and circulation figures. The more popular the cover of a publication, the higher the sales, circulation and potential profitability will be. Thus it is of the utmost importance for any publication to make the suitable cover selections, considering that the wrong choices can contribute towards a decrease in circulation and eventually fatal consequences for the publication. This study endeavours to determine which requirements magazine covers should meet to be successful and also which tendencies can be identified in the cover choices of SARIE and rooi rose and how these tendencies can be explained. In literature it was found that there are several requirements and directions to which magazine covers should account to be able to be achieving success. It was also found that magazine covers consist of several elements, such as the logo (master-head), cover-girl/-photo, background colours, text and also competitions (announced on the cover). SARIE and rooi rose's covers were analysed in accordance with the requirements for magazine covers. It was found that these magazine covers complied with the formal requirements formulated in the literature consulted. It also appeared that the success of every cover and edition is determined by the cover elements as a whole and not only the popularity of the "cover-girl" only. Several aspects should thus be taken into account when planning the magazine cover. It also appeared that although the cover choice sets an agenda for readers concerning the topics they will eventually be thinking about and discussing, another dimension of agenda-setting rather is to the point, namely the role readers' preferences play (through their personal feedback and buying of magazines) regarding editors' decision in respect of covers. / Thesis (M.A. (Communication Studies))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2010

January 2003 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The thesis is based on the increasing importance of pictures in the 20th century. Pictures may be understood as (1) gaze stimulating and as (2) appearances charged with communicative potentiality. The use that the media make of the gaze is extremely conspicuous. Even in their ambiguity, pictures are veritable publicity instruments in a century during which news and information became gradually commercial goods in the hands of great communication groups. Our research sources are covers of best selling Brazilian magazines. Since the information market is intimately linked to politics and the analyzed period ranges from the late 60s (the starting point of press censorship by the government) to the late 80s (the first true election for the presidency of Brazil after censorship), it is important to problematize the communication theme as Brazil alternated from censorship and dictatorship to democracy. Magazine covers are performance signs of the big press and, at the same time, of the gaze structuring itself throughout the century: the gaze that seeks precise and fast information. Common strategies in magazine covers, uses of color, body expression codes, underlined themes which show the constitution of meanings suggested to the great amount of photos by the same communication media, are analyzed. Picture-composed synthesis establishes discussions, giving great importance to pictures since they exercise an excluding stance. Magazine covers allure the magazines' target public, or consumers. Beneath the magazines' syntheses lie... (Complete abstract, click electronic access below) / Doutor

Hard Muscle, Slim Body : A Systemic Functional Analysis of the Covers of Men’s and Women’s Fitness Magazines

Jansson, Pernilla January 2014 (has links)
Magazine covers are multimodal texts designed to draw the attention of potential readers. Health and fitness magazines, in particular, make up a large portion of the publishing industry, and previous research has pointed to their influence on readers’ perceptions of health and fitness. In order to interpret the multimodality of magazine covers, a different approach other than the purely linguistic one needs to be employed. Following the theoretical frameworks of Systemic Functional Linguistics and Social Semiotics, this study set out to investigate the verbal and visual construction of health on eight covers of Men’s Health and Women’s Health. The findings indicate that there are significant differences in how health is constructed on the men’s and women’s edition of the magazines. These differences mainly concern the way in which health is achieved, and the relationship between the viewers and the magazine. This not only indicates that different strategies were used to attract viewers, but also reveals something about the relationship the viewer is supposed to have with their bodies as well as their perceptions of health.
