Memory and ArchitectureHuang, Sining 11 June 2019 (has links)
Proper and dignified care for an aging population, especially those with Stage IandII Alzheimer's disease is a challenge. To stay and live in one place as conditions progress irreversibly is perhaps one of the areas where architecture could make a contribution. In addition to patients, the needs of caretakers and visiting family members play a role in the program for a new facility. As an architectural premise, the focus is directed toward an environment that is memorable, provides basic comfort, and instills a sense of belonging. Essentially, the proposal advocates an architecture made operational by providing spaces that enable deep archaic memories which seem to remain present in the psyche of Alzheimer's patients even in advanced stages. / Master of Architecture

Does It Matter Who We Ask in Household Surveys? A Study on Gendered Effects and Decision Making Processes in EcuadorYang, Chao 05 January 2015 (has links)
The understanding of how households make decisions may improve the success of an economic development program and enhance targeted training efforts. Technology adoption and farm management decisions depend on household decision making. If a relevant decision maker can be clearly identified and specifically trained to meet his or her needs, the development program may be enhanced. Many approaches have been developed to help understand household decision making processes and the responses to household surveys provide the basis for many such approaches. Survey questions are often asked of a single person, and proxy responses are commonly used. Though potential bias from proxy responses is well documented, there is less information regarding the relationship between the proxy and his or her characteristics and the veracity of responses to subjective questions like who makes decisions within the household or who is in charge of major responsibilities. This paper employs the methods of mining contrast-set (Bay and Pazzani, 1999, 2001) and association rule (Agrawal et al., 1993) to answer the general question of whether and under what conditions proxy responses to survey questions are acceptable in a rural area of Ecuador. It also analyzes how factors such as gender of the respondent matters and how other factors affect the suitability of using proxy responses.
The findings show that gender matters for farm-household decision making in rural Ecuador. For instance, more male than female respondents are likely to claim that they are responsible for household decision-making. Respondents answer differently not only to some subjective questions such as who sells crops, but also to objective survey question such as the number of female workers in a family. Factors such as the age of the respondent are found to influence responses about certain activities such as preparing and applying pesticides. The pattern of responses to both objective and subjective questions as well as the effect on responses by characteristics differ by areas where the survey is conducted, etc.. / Master of Science

An examination of the relationship between attachment and loss : the role of meaning-makingDouglas, Ryan Patrick 25 September 2014 (has links)
This dissertation examined the relationship between attachment insecurity and complicated grief by testing a path model of variables that were hypothesized to mediate this relationship. Three meaning-making variables were tested as potential mediators: benefit-finding, sense-making, and positive reappraisal. First, a series of principal components analyses were performed to determine the factor structure of these meaning-making variables. After these constructs were identified, a series of hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to determine the unique contribution of each of the primary variables in predicting either complicated grief or one of the meaning-making variables. As hypothesized, some of the attachment and meaning-making variables were highly associated with complicated grief. Attachment insecurity variables were also associated with some of the meaning-making variables suggesting that attachment may have some influence on how individuals use meaning-making strategies in the midst of a loss. These variables were then entered into a path analysis that accounted for other relevant risk factors. It was found that, contrary to the main hypothesis, the meaning-making variables did not appear to mediate the relationship between attachment insecurity and complicated grief. Multiple regression was used to determine the relative impact of meaning-making and attachment variables on complicated grief because these variables have not been previously included in one statistical model. The results suggested that both meaning-making and attachment insecurity variables can play an important role as risk factors for complicated grief and that these relationships are still present after accounting for the closeness that an individual reported towards the deceased. It was concluded that both sets of variables, attachment and meaning-making, should be included in models of the development of complicated grief and that both may have clinical implications in terms of how to approach counseling for individuals struggling with complicated grief. More research on this topic is needed to look at similar research questions within specific populations. It was also suggested that in the future, researchers need to find better ways to measure meaning-making constructs because the current findings suggest that meaning-making may be even more multifaceted than has been suggested in previous literature. / text

Descriptive analysis of Pinot noir juice and wine qualitiesLudwig-Williams, Nancy 30 April 1987 (has links)
The overall purpose of this study was to develop
sensory evaluation methodology whereby wine quality can
be predicted from juice quality. Descriptive analysis
was used by a trained panel to describe Pinot noir juice
and wine from three sources. From each source, one wine
and four juice samples (a control and three treatments)
were prepared. The following three treatments were
applied to the crushed grapes prior to pressing the
juice: freezing and thawing; skin contact with 250 ppm
Pectinol VR (a pectinase); and skin contact with 250 ppm
Rohapect D5L (another pectinase). The trained panel
developed descriptive terminology which differed between
Pinot noir juice and Pinot noir wine. The juice
treatments created subtle, if any, aroma differences. Treatment differences were evident in color, as measured
by human perception and by instrumental measurement. Few
characteristics of wine aroma and/or color correlated
with juice aroma and/or color. Perceived color
correlated well with Somer's color density measurement
(the sum of the corrected absorbances at 420 and 520
nm.). Some of the same samples were evaluated by a wine
industry panel. They appeared to disagree regarding the
definition of varietal character. Further research
utilizing grapes from many sources is necessary to
determine whether Pinot noir wine quality can be predicted
from Pinot noir juice quality. / Graduation date: 1987

HUSBAND AND WIFE PARTICIPATION IN DECISION-MAKING RELATIVE TO INVESTMENT VALUE OF HOUSINGBlock, Linda Mary, 1945- January 1987 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine agreement of husbands and of wives as groups and to explore differences in responses within individual couples in the house purchasing decision participation relative to items comprising investment value of housing. The sample consisted of 144 married couples between the ages of 30 and 60 who had purchased their house jointly and resided in the Tucson SMSA. Non-parametric tests were used to analyze the data. The Kendall's Coefficient of Concordance measured agreement of husbands and wives as groups. The McNemar Test was used to examine significant differences in responses within individual couples. Results of this study found that for items tested in this study that husbands and wives do agree when making house purchasing decisions. Wives tended to respond with a higher perceived participation score both for self and spousal responses than did their respective husband. Twelve significant differences were found.
