The Fugitive Kind in the Major Plays of Tennessee Williams

Gunter, John O. 01 1900 (has links)
What basic similarities are found in all the fugitives? First of all, they are fugitives in the sense that they are wanderers. While not necessarily running to or from some specific thing, the fugitives nonetheless are men who travel; they are men who only face their conflicts directly when they attempt to stop traveling either by changing themselves so that they will fit in (Val in Orpheus Descending and Chance), by changing their environment so that it will accept them (Val in Battle of Angels and Shannon), or by searching for something that is permanently lost (Kilroy).

香港變性女人(MTFs)的性別認同與體現. / Gender identity and embodiment of male to female transsexual women in Hong Kong / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / Xianggang bian xing nü ren (MTFs) de xing bie ren tong yu ti xian.

January 2012 (has links)
This study is mainly based on in-depth interviews with seven local MTFs (Male-to-Females/Transsexual women) in Hong Kong. Taking off from MTFs’ lived experiences, the study focuses on their gender identity and embodiment, and explores the power relationships and discourses of gender in our culture. And it also suggests some possibilities for ideological and social changes. / The rights and needs of transsexual people have been neglected in our society, and there are often misunderstandings and discrimination from the public. In academic context, there is a lack of consideration for transsexual people’s voices and experiences in gender studies in Hong Kong. In particular, in the field of gender studies - nowadays seemingly dominated by sexuality issues - there is a non-critical tendency to imagine transsexual people to be warriors who subvert gender dualism and gendernorms warriors. Such imagination or discourse also exists in local movements of sexual and gender minorities. Realizing these misunderstandings and myths in society, academia and movement, I think a more localized and grounded study is needed to construct new knowledge and theories about transsexuality and gender/sexuality. / This thesis analyzes MTFs’ experiences at three levels: gender as discourse (including medical and theoretical-political), gender as structure, and gender as embodiment. Firstly, by analyzing how MTFs interact with the medical institution and discourse, I find that MTFs did not or do not play a passive or victim role, but nevertheless they can make use of these medical resources, although limited and restricted, to “do gender. And then, I explore oppression and survival strategies of MTFs living within the gender structure, and the possibilities and limitation of doing gender in our society can be analyzed. Afterwards, I reveal the contradictions inside MTFs’ own bodies and intimate relationships. Only by looking into their hesitation, struggling, compromise, negotiation and resistance in these contradictions can their gender embodiment and subjectivity be understood. The last analytical part focuses on what critiques and reflection MTFs’ experiences could bring us on the mainstream gender/sexuality discourses and identity politics in academia and movement. In conclusion, by theorizing transsexuality, with insights from feminist epistemology, I suggest destabilization and melting the boundary among different subjects, in order to surpass the binary thinking of Subversion vs Convention, and transcend the structure of opposing the Minority vs Majority into new theoretical, practical and political possibilities. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / 陳文彦. / "2012年3月". / "2012 nian 3 yue". / Thesis (M.Phil.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2012. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 174-178). / Electronic reproduction. Classification of juvenile delinquents : cluster analysis using sociemotional, psychoeducational, and neuropsychological variables

McKinney, Robert January 1999 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to describe a sample of incarcerated juveniles with severe delinquency histories using variables selected from the MMPI-A, WISC-III, DVMI, WRAT-III, WJ-R, CPT, and WCST. The subjects were classified into subgroups using cluster analysis. The membership and profiles of the subgroups that were derived using MMPI variables were compared to the subgroups formed using variables from all domains and to previous school based diagnoses. Group membership did not correspond to school based diagnoses or with clusters formed with different sets of variables. The MMPI-A profiles were more interpretable if the clusters were formed with only MMPI-A variables. For the entire sample, these subjects were found to be about one standard deviation below the mean in Full Scale IQ, verbal expression, visual-motor integration, and academic achievement. They were near the mean of normative samples for receptive verbal language and ability to inhibit perseverative responses. Phonological processing was better than sight word reading, but not as good as reading comprehension. Executive functioning data supported the underactive cortex theory of psychopathy and favored Eysenck's (1977) hypothesis that this interferes with conditioning, but not Hare's (1970) inference of perseverative response patterns.Whether formed from variables from all domains or from MMPI-A domains only, the derived clusters resulted in a strong levels of performance effect with the best and worst performing groups in one domain functioning at a very similar level in the other domains. Groups in the moderate range were differentiated by a less well defined patternsof scores effect. / Department of Educational Psychology

The barriers and enabling factors for the uptake of voluntary medical male circumcision among "Coloured" males between the ages of 15 and 49 years in the Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality

Cockburn, Jonathan January 2016 (has links)
Magister Public Health - MPH / Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) has been proven to reduce heterosexual HIV transmission to men by approximately 60%. It has been argued that achieving 80% circumcision coverage among males aged 15–49 years within five years and maintaining this coverage rate in subsequent years, could avert 3.4 million new HIV infections within 15 years and generate treatment and care savings of US$16.5 billion. As a result the South African Government plans to circumcise 4.3 million males aged 15 and 49 years by the 2015/2016 financial year. However, in the Western Cape the uptake for circumcision has been poor. While there is not a great deal of knowledge out there about the reasons for the uptake (or lack thereof) of VMMC in the Western Cape, current research focus on Xhosa males predominantly. However, there is limited research on circumcision among the "Coloured" population of the Western Cape. As the "Coloured" population is the largest group in the Western Cape, this gap in research and knowledge is worth noting. The current study aimed to explore the barriers to and enablers of uptake of VMMC among "Coloured" males between the ages of 15 and 49 years in the Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality. Methodology: The study adopted a qualitative design; semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven key informants, and two focus group discussions with men who had undergone VMMC and men who had chosen not to volunteer to undergo VMMC. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. Results: The key enablers to uptake of VMMC were: the desire for improved hygiene; the reduction in the risk of contracting other STIs; the reduction in the risk of contracting HIV; the role of partners and family members who can encourage males to access services; the perceived improvement in the males' sexual experience and performance; and cultural reasons and religious injunction. On the other hand the key barriers that discouraged "Coloured" participants from accessing the services include: fear, particularly the fear of pain; the experience of the health services and the role of health staff; the six week healing period in which males cannot have sex; the unwillingness to alter the body that they were born with; role of partners and family as discouragers of uptake; the influence of gangsterism on the ability of males to access services offered on a different gang's 'turf'; and, substance abuse. The recommendations in this study focus largely on the need to expand the coverage of VMMC in the Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality and to increase the uptake among "Coloured" males between the ages of 15 and 49 years. . These recommendations essentially involve the need to break down the barriers and to accentuate the enablers. To this end social mobilisation campaigns should not focus solely on HIV prevention but rather on hygiene and improved sexual experience and appearance as well as the cultural and religious aspects. With regard to the barriers it is essential that any social mobilisation engages with the fear of pain. On method to do this would be through the introduction and expansion of the PrePex™ device. The fear that circumcision could impact on sexual performance and the fear of embarrassment and discomfort the whole process would potentially bring would need to be allayed. In addition it is essential that the health services and health staff are orientated and trained in a way that ensures that the process of circumcision is as easy as possible for the clients. / National Research Foundation

The anxious actor

Logan, Zachari John 25 November 2008
The collection of paintings and drawings constituting the thesis exhibition The Anxious Actor are rooted within the visual language of contemporary realist figurative painting and drawing, with a focus on the male body. Traditionally in western culture, the depiction of the human form, both male and female, has sought to reinforce hierarchical constructions and meta-narratives implicit in religious and imperialistic structures. I paint and draw my own body as subject, exploring personal narratives that contradict these pre-existing notions. As a queer man interested in the vocabulary of realist figurative painting, my body is a catalyst for my fascination with stereotypic masculine portrayals.<p> Utilizing historic themes of male bravado, heroism and narcissism I juxtapose the mundane realities of everyday contemporary life. My narratives are situated within the complex visual languages of Neo-classical, Baroque, Rococo and Renaissance style painting. These specific pictorial vocabularies add both psychological and metaphoric weight to my conceptual process; locating my marginalized identity within historic and contemporary archetypes.

First year male students' personal experiences of senior male students' aggression in residences / Cornelia Twine

Twine, Cornelia January 2013 (has links)
This qualitative research study explores and describes first year male students’ personal experiences of senior male students’ aggression in residences. In recent years, the aggressive behaviour of male university students has become a matter of concern for university staff. The aims of this study were (i) to explore and describe the nature of aggression as experienced by first year male students in the residences; (ii) to explore how first year male students’ experiences of aggression influence their day-to-day lives; (iii) to explore and to gain an understanding of how first year male students feel about living in the same residences as senior male students; and (iv) to make suggestions to assist first year male students to cope with aggression in residences. A qualitative design situated within an interpretive paradigm and employing a phenomenological approach to inquiry was employed in order to achieve the aims of the study. The research focused on exploring, understanding and describing the lived experiences of particular first year male students; the study was thus explorative, descriptive and contextual in nature. A purposeful random sampling strategy (Patton, 2002) was used to select the sample of first year male students who live in on-campus residences at the North West University (NWU) Potchefstroom campus to participate in this research study. A number of ethical requirements were met in this research study: approval was obtained from the Ethics Committee of the NWU Faculty of Education Sciences (Potchefstroom campus); and permission to conduct research was obtained from the Dean of Students on the (Potchefstroom campus), wardens of nine on-campus residences, the student council representative chairperson (SRC) and the residence primarius (chairperson) of each residence. In addition, participants’ interests were protected by ensuring their anonymity and obtaining their informed consent in writing before the research data generation process began. Visual ethics were strictly observed in taking the photographs which were used during the data generation process. The data generation process consisted of two phases: (i) photo-narratives (written) and (ii) photo-narrative-elicitation-interviews. Data saturation occurred after the fourteenth photo-narrative-elicitation-interview. The data analysis of the generated data was done by means of interpretative phenomenological analysis (Griffin & May, 2012). After a consensus meeting with independent coders, the two main themes that emerged were clarified. Theme 1: first year male students associate senior male students’ aggression in residences with feelings and emotions that vary from indifference to negativity, but they remain optimistic about the outcome of living with them. Theme 2: first year male students suggest strategies to cope with experiences of senior male student aggression in residences. In the last chapter, the researcher provides suggestions that could help first year male students to cope with senior male students’ aggression in residences. Limitations of this research study are also discussed and recommendations are made for further research. / MEd (Learner Support), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014
