Previous issue date: 2017-10-30 / CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The present research presents the development and characterization of cementitious composites reinforced with jute and malva fibers textile. In order to increase the durability of these materials, a free matrix of calcium hydroxide was used, a degrading agent of natural fibers in a cementitious environment. The treatment of the textile was performed by the hornification process, aiming to reduce the fiber volume variation and consequently to improve fiber-matrix adhesion and durability. Reinforced cementitious plates with two layers of jute and malva textile were produced by a pneumatic system and exhibited double-cracked flexural tensile behavior for most experimental conditions (plates reinforced with treated and untreated textile and matrix of reference and modified by 40% metakaolin) at twenty and eight days. The composites reinforced with textile treated for 10 cycles of hornification, presented multiple cracking only in the middle third of the specimens. The durability of the composites was investigated by means of the accelerated aging process (50 wetting and drying cycles) and they were evaluated by tensile strength tests, microstructural analysis and physical characterization. In the composites with metakaolin, the hornified and untreated textile did not result a significant increase in flexural tensile strength (MOR) in relation to the reinforced reference matrix (about 6.5 MPa for all composites), however, those presented high specific energy (more than 100% increase). After aging, the matrix modified and reinforced with textile in both conditions (untreated and hornified) were efficient, since they preserved the mechanical characteristics, mainly MOR (6.5 MPa). This was not observed for the reinforced reference matrix, in this case, there was a 25% loss in resistance (MOR = 5.15 MPa).

Previous issue date: 2015-12-21 / FAPEAM - Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas / Since ancient times it has been known the use range of natural fibers and other organic and inorganic materials such as reinforcing agent in matrix to improve their mechanical properties. The vegetable fibers have numerous advantages for use in composites such as low cost, low density and abrasion, are nontoxic, biodegradable, abundant in nature and other factors. From this, it was decided to use the mauve fiber (Urena lobata Linn), widespread in the Amazon region and sold in the local market, as a reinforcing agent in cement composites. This study aimed to develop laminar cement composites with long alignments of mauve fibers, consisting of 6% by volume of fibers dispersed in 5 longitudinal layers, to obtain a laminar plate. It was proposed two kinds of treatment to the composite: impregnating the fibers by immersion coating based on acrylic copolymer emulsion in order to decrease hydrophilicity and matrix treating with comminuted ceramic waste in 50% partial replacement of the Portland cement to provide calcium hydroxide decrease and improving the mechanical strength of the composite protecting the vegetable filler. The composites were characterized by direct tensile, 4 points bending, optical microstructural analysis and scanning electron. The fibers were characterized by thermogravimetry and morphological analysis using optical and scanning microscopy in order to evaluate varnish treatment. The results of electron microscopy showed no improvement interfacial between fiber and matrix after treatment. Moreover, the mechanical tests showed that the composite with the partial substitution of ceramic waste have presented the same or superior results when compared to the Portland cement matrix, both for the reinforcement with the treated fibers and the untreated, leading to consider the mauve fiber relevance as a promising reinforcement agent for high strength composites.

Studium akumulace kademnatých iontů energetickými plodinami / Study of accumulation of cadmium ion by energy cropsBerkyová, Petra January 2012 (has links)
Cadmium is heavy metal toxic for plants and animals and environmental contaminant which must be removed from natural environment. In recent years a new method phytoremediation is getting more attention. This method uses plants called hyperaccumulators for extraction of heavy metals from soils. Hyperaccumulators have, however, after accumulation of heavy metals no other use. Therefore new possibilities are discussed in last few years. Energy plants, in this thesis sorghum and malva, could be used for accumulation of heavy metals from soils and after that these plants could be used as energy source. This thesis wants to find out if sorgum and malva are able to grow in cadmium contaminated environment and if these plants will accumulate cadmium. It also compares different cultivars of sorghum in toxicity tests and compares ability of these cultivars to grow in cadmium contaminated environment and to accumulate this heavy metal. Further it focuses on affection of uptake of kadmium ions by sorhum in presence of glutathione or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid.

Plant Compound Pest Control in California Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) ProductionWeissman, Eli Mahanes 01 February 2017 (has links) (PDF)
Allelopathy occurs when one organism releases a compound into the environment that affects the functioning of another organism. Scientists have long suspected that alleopathic plant compounds could offer novel, softer chemistries to the ongoing battle of controlling pests in agricultural fields. Strawberry growers rely on toxic fumigants to kill soilborne fungal pests, weeds, nematodes, and insects. Increased regulations have reduced the use of fumigants (including methyl bromide), and strawberry growers need new sustainable pest control solutions. We selected four putative allelochemicals with known fungicidal and herbicidal activity (ferulic acid, gallic acid, juglone, and p-Coumaric acid). We assessed the pesticidal activity of these plant compounds both in agar and in soil on two emerging soilborne fungal pathogens (Macrophomina phaseolina and Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. fragariae), and four annual weeds commonly found in strawberry production fields (Malva parviflora, Melilotus officinalis, Poa annua, and Senecio vulgaris). We also assayed lettuce (Lactuca sativa ‘Inferno’), which served as a positive control plant species due to its sensitivity to phytotoxic compounds. Fitted sigmoidal dose-response curves predicted EC50 and EC75 values for each combination of plant compound and pest.
All plant compounds inhibited the in vitro radial mycelial growth of the two soilborne fungal pathogens in a dose-dependent manner. Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. fragariae was more sensitive to the plant compounds than Macrophomina phaseolina. Average EC50 values for the radial mycelial growth of two F. oxysporum f.sp. fragariae isolates were 75.1 parts per million by weight (ppmw) juglone, 469 ppmw p-Coumaric acid, and 687 ppmw ferulic acid. Average EC50 values for the radial mycelial growth of two M. phaseolina isolates were 196 ppmw juglone, 2869 ppmw p-Coumaric acid, and 5716 ppmw ferulic acid. The three compounds we assayed in vitro also reduced M. phaseolina colony forming unit counts in soil and the EC50 values were 476 ppmw ferulic acid, 612 ppmw juglone, and 827 ppmw p-Coumaric acid. Metconazole, the conventional fungicide control, did not inhibit M. phaseolina colony forming unit counts in soil at its label high rate. The plant compounds required similar or lower rates to inhibit colony forming units that grew from M. phaseolina overwintering structures (microsclerotia) in soil as to inhibit radial mycelial growth in vitro. Based on the EC50 value in soil assays, ferulic acid was the least expensive plant compound to apply on a per acre basis to inhibit M. phaseolina ($74,226). In F.oxysporum f.sp. fragariae soil assays, the compounds induced hormesis at lower rates and may be germination stimulant candidates. Metconazole and the high rates of every compound effectively or completely inhibited F. oxysporum f.sp. fragariae colony forming units in soil.
The plant compounds were more herbicidal than fungicidal in vitro. When combining the in vitro seedling length results for L. sativa, M. parviflora, P. annua, and S. vulgaris the EC50 values differed significantly (p < .0001) and were: 47 ppmw juglone, 120 ppmw p-Coumaric acid, 189 ppmw ferulic acid, and 297 ppmw gallic acid. At least one rate of ferulic acid, juglone, and p-Coumaric acid inhibited the germination of all plant species, while gallic acid only inhibited the germination of P. annua at 1000 ppmw (p < .05). In soil, visible microbial contamination in individual wells of 24-well plates and seed dormancy made it difficult to fit curves to weed seedling length data. The soil assay L. sativa seedling length EC50 values 11 days after initial treatment were slightly higher than in vitro, although plant compounds were in the same order of phytotoxicity: 129 ppmw juglone, 616 ppmw p-Coumaric acid, 644 ppmw ferulic acid, and 1584 ppmw gallic acid. Based on the EC50 value in soil assays, the least expensive compound to inhibit L. sativa seedling length on a per acre basis was gallic acid ($21,676). Germination 26 days after initial soil treatment generally declined in a dose-dependent manner for each compound. There was a direct relationship between plant compound rate and seedling damage in soil with the higher rates of all compounds, except p-Coumaric acid, inducing damage comparable to a conventional herbicide (pendimethalin or oxyfluorfen). Contaminated treatments appeared to be due to an interaction between plant compounds and microorganisms because herbicide and water controls had almost no microbial growth 11 days after initial treatment. Further, there was a significant positive linear relationship between level of contamination in phenolic acid-treated wells (ferulic acid, gallic acid, and p-Coumaric acid, p < .0001) and the in soil rate. This relationship was slightly negative in juglone soil treatments (p = .0167), which may be due to its greater antimicrobial activity than the phenolic acids. We propose that herbicidal effects in soil were due to the joint effect of the plant compounds themselves, and the microbial growth in wells. Microbial growth was either antagonistic or additive to the inhibitory action of the plant compounds.
The plant compounds we assayed were inhibitory of emerging fungal pathogens in strawberry production and common annual strawberry field weeds. Evidence presented in this thesis correlates well with past research that not only found plant compounds to be herbicidal and fungicidal, but also described their modes-of-action (such as the production of reactive oxygen species that causes necrotic lesions on roots, and inhibition of glycolytic enzyme activity that prevents germination), and implicate plant compounds as carbon sources for a variety of microorganisms. Compound prices are currently exorbitant, but may decline as demand increases. Whether or not they provide effective pest control may depend on soil texture, organic matter, microbial diversity, and other edaphic factors.

Previous issue date: 2008-02-28 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / Anthracnose is considered an important disease of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) in the state of Pernambuco and in various parts of the world, causing significant losses for fruit commercialization. Actions directed to preventive measures such as alternative control, are of great importance through the exploration of secondary compounds present in medicinal plants with antimicrobial activity. This study aimed to, assess the efficiency of crude extracts in the control of anthracnose in bell pepper, and analyze the control stability of promising treatments in relation to different extract, inoculum, temperature and pathogen isolates concentrations. In preliminary selection, 16 plant species were used in order to obtain aqueous and hidroalcoólico extracts. The aqueous extracts of garlic (Allium sativum L.), Mallow (Malva sp.), and ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe.) showed greater than 97% reductions in disease severity levels. The greatest value of CL75 was found for the garlic extract (3.5%), while the lowest value of CL75 was verified with the application of the ginger extract (2.1%). The lowest rate of efficiency reduction of the anthracnose control (TRE) with the pathogen inoculum increase occurred with garlic extract. With regard to different C. gloeosporioides isolates, significant interaction was found between the different extracts and isolates of the pathogen. The plant extracts were effective in controlling the disease in temperatures of 20, 25 and 30 ° C, while temperatures in the 10, 15and 35 ° C there was no disease. There were no differences in the efficiencies of garlic and ginger extracts, while the extract of hollyhock had the lower efficiency at 20 ° C, differing from the other temperatures, and other extracts at this temperature. The results obtained in this study indicate the great potential for use of the garlic extract (6%) in anthracnose control of bell pepper, considering its stability in different situations.

Cassava and caesar weed are among the mainly products of the familiar agriculture in the Northeast of the Pará State. To treat these products the small farmers used to sink amounts of cassava and caesar weed in small streams (regionally named as "igarapés"), to make peal softer and remove its toxic compounds, in the case of cassava, or to promote defibrating in the case of the caesar weed. The effects of these practices to the stream water quality are poor known. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the potential impacts of these practices to the fluvial hydrobiogeochemistry in the "igarapés" of these region. We adopted the strategy of collect stream water samples before the washing point of these products, in the washing point, and ten meters after this point. For a clearer understanding of the feasible alterations of the water chemistry due to cassava and caesar weed washing it was conducted besides the field monitoring a controlled input and output discharge tank experiment. In both approaches it was measured in the dissolved material the following hydrobiogeochemical: pH, electric conductivity, dissolved oxygen, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, chloride, sulfate, phosphate, nitrate, ammonium, as well as total nitrogen total and organic and inorganic carbon. Our results point out that these cassava and caesar weed washing processes contribute to alter the fluvial hydrobiogeochemistry of these small streams only locally. However, some of the observed local alterations remained along at least ten meters downstream the products washing points. In the tank experiments the alteration were observed clearer and a cluster analysis confirmed the hypotheses that these rude treatments of the studied agriculture products contributes to change the fluvial hydrogeochemistry of the monitored small streams. The study recommends some precautions regarding to the evaluated products treatments and also the adoption of some parameters measurements to monitor these impacts.

So this is a considerable importance factor for the better development of the cycles which depend of it. The study aims therefore to research and collaborate with the improvement of the productive chain of mauve (U. lobata L.), contributing to the realization of this structural and organizational growth. When considering that the mauve´s planting is done by the mauve farmers which adopt the system of household production.
