Diabetes Self-Management Education for Adults With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Dennis-Bradshaw, Rondalyn 01 November 2015 (has links)
Diabetes, a major public health challenge in St. Kitts, has been a focus of international public health community research. Although researchers have demonstrated that diabetes self-management education is a cost-effective strategy for the prevention of diabetes-related complications, they have yet to establish whether there is adequate education occurring in treatment settings with diabetic patients. The purpose of the study was to implement and evaluate the short-term effectiveness of a diabetes self-management education intervention on diabetes-related knowledge and accepted behavioral changes to decrease risk for complications. Based on a self-care approach, this education intervention was designed to improve diabetes-related knowledge and self-management behaviors. To test and evaluate the pre and post intervention effect, a convenience sample of 15 patients diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes attending a scheduled diabetic clinic completed the Diabetes Knowledge Test and a researcher-designed sociodemographic survey, which included self-report of blood glucose self-monitoring and foot care behaviors. The results of these analyses indicated that the participants’ knowledge level increased (p = < .001). However, Chisquare and Fisher’s exact tests determined no significant changes in the participants’ self management behaviors. The results may be attributed to the short time frame of the intervention. The implications for positive social change include opportunities to improve inter-professional collaboration in programs that will create positive effects on diabetic self care and reduce the incidence of negative health outcomes. Furthermore, the use of a self-care approach by health care professionals could be a key factor in strengthening diabetes knowledge, engagement, and self-management for Type 2 diabetic patients.

The Influence of Pain Self-Management Education on the Prevalence of Opioid Prescription among Patients with Chronic Non-Cancer Pain: An Agent-Based Modeling Simulation

Samuel-Ojo, Catherine Olubunmi January 2015 (has links)
Chronic pain has no cure. It is a lifelong condition presenting a growing concern due to its high occurrence and effects on every facet of life. It cost about $635 billion each year in medical treatment and lost productivity (IOM, 2011). The management of chronic pain using prescription painkiller opioids has increased drastically in the last two decades, leading to a consequential increase in deaths from chronic opioid use. This Plan-Do-Study-Act quality improvement project investigates the problem of the prevalence of opioid prescription using agent-based computational modeling method. The simulation models the interaction of 50 patient-agents with pain self-management messages in an episode of 50 patient iterations (visits) for 10 simulated years. This interaction generates health benefit and risk outcomes represented by wellness data obtained when messages are processed. As the simulation runs, data are dynamically captured and visualized using wellness charts, time series plots, and benefit and risk regression plots. The result of the project provides evidence for research and practice on the process of achieving more impact of programs based on administering pain self-management education to patients with chronic non-cancer pain who are currently on opioid therapy and on the process of customizing interventions that might take advantage of the conditions of behavior change driven by pain self-management messages. The tools and the evidences in this project are highly recommended to nurse practitioners primary care providers involve with providing care to the vulnerable groups of patient with chronic non-cancer pain. These evidences might inform the formation of self-management interventions that might lead to a decline in opioid use and prescription and accelerate the acceptance of self-management practices.

Hospitality Education Programs in Senior Colleges and Universities in the United States

Dahl, Joanne L. 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to describe senior-level hospitality programs and assess hospitality administrators' opinions concerning specialized accreditation during the 1990-91 academic year. Overall, administrators characterized the typical full-time faculty member as: being in a small program (1-3 members); being a non-ethnic minority; having a minimum four years industry work experience; having attained a doctoral degree; and holding the rank of associate professor. Part-time faculty members were described as: being in a small program (1-3 members); being a non-ethnic minority; having at leas one to three years industry work experience; having attained a master's degree; and holding the rank of instructor. Administrators characterized their programs as: located at public institutions; beginning after 1970; requiring graduates to acquire work experience; expecting increased enrollments; having placement services available; and not offering continuing education courses. Administrators indicated they were seeking accreditation or were accredited currently. They agreed slightly that accreditation would improve program image, help them meet their programs' missions and objectives, and provide assistance in planning.

Former à l'organisation par l'art pour un retour vers un fondement pratique : une analyse critique de l'usage de l'art dans la Management Education / Training for organization through art to return towards a practical foundation : A critical analysis of the use of art in Management Education

Flamand, Guillaume 01 December 2017 (has links)
Art has been put forward in response to the critiques of Management Education whose activities have become quite academized and where scientifically inspired approaches dominate. In my thesis, I note the homogeneity of the specialized literature which is quite focused on what the “romantic” characteristics of art can bring – art is there taken as the theoretical opposite of management. With a critical perspective, my thesis builds on a longitudinal, qualitative, inductive study of a single case to try to determine if art, used as a teaching method, creates distance with what locally dominates. The analysis indicates it is an experience of a hybrid practice, between art and management, which can resonate with the pillars of Management Education. Art entails less academism, but one remains in the domain of an organized activity that can be compatible with the current managerial values. It brings an experience of the practical, not only the romantic characteristics. It can have an effect on the means more than on the ends, so as to offer a return to a practical foundation which has been the source of Management Education before its progressive academization.

Identifying multicultural managerial competencies informing the content of a Master's program in International Management

Fortier, Denise January 2009 (has links)
The fabric of the workforce is changing. Indeed, domestic managers are working with an increasingly multicultural workforce at home while managers who travel abroad often work with people from multiple cultures. Concurrently, managers are often required to work with people in organizations that span across geographic boundaries, located in various time zones, relying mainly on information technology. However, empirical guidelines to train managers facing these challenges are scant as management typologies fall short when it comes to identifying the skills needed for simultaneously working with people from multiple cultural backgrounds. The goal of this study was to identify a repertoire of multicultural managerial competencies for work at home and abroad, in face-to-face contexts and via the use of technology. Using competency modeling as a conceptual framework, we enlisted the help of 20 mid- to upper-level managers who were invited to participate in individual behavioral event interviews to discuss positive and negative critical incidents and to answer questions grounded in job analysis. Data was analyzed using thematic (content) analysis based on a mixed method, a process that mostly illustrated the emergence of new competencies. ATLAS.ti was then used to code transcripts and to cross-reference behaviors according to emerging competency categories. Managers were then invited to validate the relevance of the initial version of the typology and to confirm that no competencies or related behaviors were missing. The resulting Multicultural Managerial Competency (MMC) typology, outlining five competence categories that combine 12 competencies along with their 71 corresponding behavioral indicators, makes both theoretical and practical contributions while offering flexibility for application. Indeed, the MMC typology illustrates an overlap between management and intercultural/cross-cultural literature, confirming that managers in multicultural contexts are called upon to invest in the management of trusting relationships, in distance management, as well as in expatriate management. Multicultural elements also permeate classic business and team functions thereby giving management requirements a new form. In terms of practical applications, the MMC typology provides concrete behavioral indicators for managers to use as guidelines for competence and serves to inform the creation of university curricula in international management.

BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING (BIM) - TO PREPARE CURRENT CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT STUDENTS FOR TOMORROW’S CONSTRUCTION CAREERS

Clark A. Cory (5929613) 10 June 2019 (has links)
<p>Building Information Modeling, or BIM, is a process that is quickly changing the way Architectural, Engineering, and Construction companies manage construction projects. Being a company specific process, only parts of the process have been accepted as a standardized method across every company. Those components that are not standardized have become proprietary to each specific company. The goal of the research is to provide a rich and complete description of the use of BIM across multiple Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) companies in order to inform and integrate BIM into construction graphics and management curricula in higher education. The literature review generated a thorough understanding of BIM standards currently identified. The methodology, a comparison of BIM theory to industrial practices, provided a broader picture of all aspects of BIM being utilized in current AEC companies. The results identified a comparison of all aspects of BIM to current AEC practices and paints a well-defined picture of what is being accomplished with BIM within company construction processes across AEC companies that are classified into several categories. BIM practices within each company indicate similarities and differences that give a rich BIM description across the entire AEC industry. The results suggest a high usage of BIM across more areas than just construction of the building branching out to all areas within a set of construction documents for project management. </p>
