Expansion Planning of Distribution Substations with Dynamic Programming and Immune Algorithm

Lin, Chia-Chung 24 June 2005 (has links)
The thesis investigates the optimal expansion planning of substations for the distribution system of Taipei City District of Taiwan Power Company. The small area load forecasting is executed with the support of Outage Management System(OMS) database. The capacity expansion of distribution substations is obtained by considering the annual load growth of each service area to achieve the cost effectiveness of substation investment. The geographic information of each service zone has been retrieved form the OMS data. With the land use planning of Taipei City Government, the load density of each small area for the target year is derived according to the final floor area and development strength of the land base. The load forecasting of each small area is then solved by considering the load growth of each customer class, which is then used for the expansion planning of substations. After determining the small area load forecasting for the final target year, the center of gravity method is applied to find the geographic blocks of all substations and the corresponding service areas at the target year. The power loading of each small area is used to calculate the power loading loss of which service area to solve the optimal location within the block for each substation. Based on the annual load forecasting of all small areas, the expansion planning of distribution substations for Taipei City District is derived by Dynamic Programming(DP) and Immune Algorithm(IA) to achieve minimization of power loading loss with subject to the operation constraint. By the proposed methodology, the unit commitment of distribution substations is determined to meet the load growth of service area and achieve power loading loss minimization of distribution systems.

Fault Restoration of Distribution System by Considering Customer Service Priority

Yeh, Chao-ching 10 February 2003 (has links)
When a permanent fault occurs in distribution systems, the fault location should be detected, isolated and the un-faulted but out of service areas have to be restored. The outage areas can be minimized by the switching operation based on the system load characteristics. By integrating the Outage Management Information System (OMIS), the connectivity of customers and feeder/transformer, the Customer Information System (CIS), the Automated mapping /Facility Management (AM/FM) with the customer load patterns, the hourly load demand and the service priority index of each distribution feeder and each service zone are calculated. By this way, the service restoration of the most power demand and customers can be obtained for the fault contingency of distribution system. To enhance the effectiveness of switching operation for fault contingency of distribution system, the Expert System with CLIPS has been developed by considering the operation rules in the application software program. A underground distribution system with 26 feeders in Kaohsiung District of Taiwan Power Company has been selected for computer simulation to solve the proper switching operation by taking into account the service priority of customers. It has been verified that the proposed methodology can restore the customer power service effectively by Expert System with distribution operation rules.

The Structural Relationship of Affecting Effectiveness of Implementing Management Accounting System

Su, Jyh-Tay 22 July 2003 (has links)
This research constructed the structural relationships between competitive strategy, size of business unit, task environment, organizational structure, information asymmetry and the information characteristics of management accounting system (MAS). In addition, the structural model included the impact of MAS design, by way of job-relevant information, on managerial performance. There were two kinds of relationship, including the effects of intervening variables, 28 hypotheses were studied. This research collected empirical data of 107 middle-level managers who serviced in those manufacturing companies listed in Taiwan Stock Exchange Market, and used the method of path analysis to test the hypothesized intervening effects. The empirical evidence of this research revealed as follows: 1.Those business units that adopted differentiation strategy have faced relatively high variable task environment, and adopted cost leadership strategy have faced low variable task environment. 2.Those managers of big business units perceived usefulness of broad and aggregated MAS information would be higher than those of small business units. 3.Those managers of business units perceived relatively high usefulness of broad and aggregated MAS information would have high managerial performance than those who perceived low usefulness of broad and aggregated MAS information. 4.Those managers of business units perceived relatively high usefulness of broad and aggregated MAS information would have more job-relevant information than those who perceived low usefulness of broad and aggregated MAS information. 5.Not anticipated effects this research hypothesized, the data revealed those business units that adopted differentiation strategy had low degree of decentralization, and adopted cost leadership strategy had relatively high degree of decentralization. 6.Not anticipated effects this research hypothesized, the data approved the indirect effects of decentralization on strategy type and broad and aggregated MAS information, but those business units which adopted differentiation strategy had relatively low degree of decentralization would perceived high usefulness of broad and aggregated MAS information. 7.The empirical results verified the indirect effects of job-relevant information on broad and aggregated MAS information and managerial performance.

Determining the level of usage of information systems in selected small businesses / Pieter Botha

Botha, Pieter Andries January 2011 (has links)
When starting a new business, the owner has the vision to grow the business to a large corporate enterprise. In the small business stage, many challenges face the management of such businesses though. The influence of the external environment pushes the business from one side to the other. It is at this point where a true entrepreneur takes control and uses all necessary skills to succeed in generating the expected return on the invested money. One of the skills in the management armour of the small business manager is the ability to use information as a management tool. To gain insight into the dynamics of information management, a detailed literature study was done on all the aspects relevant to the topic. Previous research studies were taken into account to form a broad understanding of the study field. To determine the use of management information in small businesses as a tool in decision–making activities, a qualitative research study was done. The outcome of this study shows that there is a good understanding of the advantages of using management information as a decision–making tool, but that application does not happen to its full extent in practice. The management of data seems to be not very recent in small businesses. The objectives of the study was to determine the use of information, as well as the possibility of creating a communal information bureau, to assist in the availability of relevant data in the information support process. Certain recommendations were made in terms of the direct results and conclusions raised by the empirical study. Future studies can be done to determine the feasibility of communal data warehouses and data bureaus. / Thesis (MBA)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

Comparison of module usage of project management information system and success rate of construction projects: case study

Sweet, Coretta A. 09 April 2009 (has links)
If construction is about delivering a built asset that is of high quality and efficiency, wouldn t most companies use all the tools and processes available at the highest organizational level possible? A major assumption is made that Prolog Manager is an effective Project Management Information System. Saying Company X will benefit from more module use with Prolog Manager system is not the same as saying they will suffer from lack of module usage. If a company has already attained success using manual systems it successes may continue. To be as successful as possible, maximum utilization of all modules of Prolog Manager at the unique project type organizational level is necessary, and correlations can be made between higher module usage and greater project successes with this type of company size and structure.

Protecting management information systems: Virtual Private Network competitive advantage

Sirisukha, Sid Unknown Date (has links)
Information security technologists and business scholars are motivated by a desire to understand how and to what extent the application of IT within enterprise systems leads to improved and secured organizational performance. An effective relationship between business and IT professionals is a primary determinant of success in gaining business advantage through the enterprise system. As business innovation has relied increasingly on partnerships between business and IT professional, a different perspective of how IT professionals view their organizational contributions was needed for organizations to remain competitive. Business knowledge is essential if IT professionals are to create linkages with other organizational units and have a wider perspective about business objectives, thus achieving fit between IT and organizational strategies. Organizations have started responding to this challenge by demanding more business acumen in their IT staff. The focus of this study is on the knowledge that is beyond that of independent business and IT only domain knowledge of information security. Therefore, technical areas of knowledge, such as hardware and software, all of which are closely associated with IT skills, are not discussed in this thesis. This is not to declare that such knowledge is not important. Clearly technical knowledge is part of the IT professional's overall information security technology expertise, but this study is about the organization proficiency of business and the IT professional, and is therefore interested in what enables business and IT professionals to apply their business domain and technical knowledge in ways that are beneficial to the organization and to act cooperatively with their customers and business partners. The purpose of this study is to employ the triangulation method to identify the theoretical links and empirically examine the association between business and IT perspective of information security. An important contribution of this study is the identification of business and IT perspectives on information security technology. By establishing the link between business and IT, the study focuses and evaluates Virtual Private Network (VPN) as an information security technology to find out if VPN can secure and gain competitive advantage by partisan business process and organization performance. This study articulates distinctive characteristics of Virtual Private Network and management processes that extend the range of applicability across diverse business segments. It distinguishes between business and IT and explains why the exploitation of a complementary set of related information security entities (such as VPN) across multiple functions create competitive vi advantages even across a diverse set of businesses that have limited opportunity to exploit business process and organization performance. The most important direct predictor of this study is a high level of communication between business and IT. However, one cannot mandate meaningful communication between individuals. IT people have to earn the right to play a meaningful role in management forums. Based on the findings from this study, one important way for an IT person to be heard is for him/her to devote the time necessary to create competitive advantage and develop shared domain knowledge, the most influential construct in the research model. An IT person needs to understand the leverage points of the industry, the history and current issues of the business units, and to learn to apply business oriented objectives in the application of technology to business problems. This change in view would help focus their attention on security technology and ideas that could produce the most benefit and create competitive advantage, rather than those that offer the most technical promise.

Budgetstyrning och Balanserat styrkort : i form av en kombinationsmodell

Staflund, Anette January 2008 (has links)

Traditional financial management has lately been criticized, since it gives inadequate and unilateral information for decisions and strategy of the operation. The purpose of this essay is to investigate if a balanced scorecard is able to work together with a budget and become a stronger control system for the management. Essential theory underlies the gathering of data as well as the analysis, and the empirical investigation is based on personal interviews. The conclusions drawn from my analysis are that two parallel control systems could complement each other’s weaknesses. The budget and the balanced scorecard seem to harmonize very well, as the balanced scorecard has a long term strategy while the budget has a short term strategy. In my combination model, the difference in working only with a balanced scorecard is that the budget will have a stronger position than the financial perspective in a balanced scorecard.
