Dressing ghosts : museum exhibitions of historical fashion in Britain and North America

Petrov, Julia January 2012 (has links)
By critically analyzing trends in museum fashion exhibition practice over the past century, this thesis defines and describes the varied representations of historical fashion within museum exhibitions in Britain and North America. Evidence collected through archival research on past exhibitions at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Bath Fashion Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, the Royal Ontario Museum, and the McCord Museum, and supplemented by media reports, academic reviews, as well as secondary theoretical literature, suggests that the discourses of historical fashion exhibitions have been heavily influenced by the anxieties and values placed upon fashion more generally. The discipline of fashion curation is deeply rooted in and dependent upon much earlier display practices in museums, galleries, and shops. The interplay between personal and world-historical narratives in exhibitions, the celebration of consumerism and corporate brand identity, as well as claims to aesthetic universality and quality, continued to surface across historical fashion exhibitions in all the institutions studied over the period 1913 to the present. Moreover, historical fashion, as it has been displayed in the case study institutions, also reflects the function of the museum institution itself, especially its visual marking of time and social contexts. This thesis contributes to a growing literature on the history of museums and on fashion curation and provides a historical framework for exhibitions of historical fashion to both disciplines. The worksheet generated during data-gathering provides an objective vocabulary for evaluating the physical and intellectual content of a historical fashion exhibition, and is a potentially useful tool for future researchers. Furthermore, as this dissertation investigates the role of display as a means of communication about material culture, it provides new and original insights into this important aspect of museum practice and therefore, also contributes to theoretical debates within the larger field of cultural heritage.

Trådsmala och graciösa : en studie om skyltdockor / Super skinny and graceful : a study on mannequins

Lantz, Stina, Lilius, Mette January 2012 (has links)

Motion Planning: from Digital Actors to Humanoid Robots

Esteves Jaramillo, Claudia Elvira 27 February 2007 (has links) (PDF)

Development of an Instrumented Dynamic Mannequin Test to Rate the Protection Provided by Protective Clothing

Sipe, Joel Edwards 03 May 2004 (has links)
A dynamic mannequin testing facility has been constructed to test the thermal protective properties of Navy uniforms and protective clothing. The existing facility consists of a traversing mannequin mechanism that passes through a fire that has been spatially characterized by temperature and heat flux measurements. The fire is provided by 8 propane sand burners in a modified ISO 9705 room. The current project is a continuation of work done by WPI Students over the last 5 years. A copper disk surface heat flux transducer has been designed and calibrated in the WPI Cone Calorimeter. The mannequin has been instrumented with 40 of these transducers for the acquisition of heat flux data during fire exposures. Heat Flux data was collected with the bare mannequin and through protective clothing for a range of exposure times. A finite difference method approach is used to model the skins temperature response at the epidermis-dermis interface. This temperature is used to predict 1st and 2nd degree skin burns using Henrique's burn damage integral. The percent total body area (%TBA) affected by burns can be calculated by this method. The facility is now capable of providing comparative data on the relative thermal protection provided by different clothing.

Modélisation géométrique du corps humain (externe et interne) à partir des données externes / Subject-specific geometric modeling of the human body (external and internal) from external data

Nérot, Agathe 08 September 2016 (has links)
These models include a geometric representation of the body surface and an internal linkage composed of rigid segments and joints allowing simulation of human movement. The customization of human models first starts with the adjustment of external anthropometric dimensions, which are then used as input data to the adjustment of internal skeletal segments lengths. While the external data points are more readily measurable using current 3D scanning tools, the scientific challenge is to predict the characteristic points of the internal skeleton from external data only. The Institut de Biomécanique Humaine Georges Charpak (Arts et Métiers ParisTech) has developed 3D reconstruction methods of bone and external envelope from biplanar radiographs obtained from the EOS system (EOS Imaging, Paris), a low radiation dose technology. Using this technology, this work allowed proposing new external-internal statistical relationships to predict points of the longitudinal skeleton, particularly the complete set of spine joint centers, from a database of 80 subjects. The implementation of this work could improve the realism of current digital human models used for biomechanical analysis requiring information of joint center location, such as the estimation of range of motion and joint loading
