The Chapel Royal partbooks in eighteenth-century England

Hume, James Cameron January 2013 (has links)
This thesis provides a comprehensive source study of the eighteenth-century Chapel Royal partbooks (London, British Library R.M.27.a–d). The 56 manuscript volumes in this collection, which are now catalogued into four groups (or ‘sets’), were used in the daily choral services at St James’s Palace during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The sources have a complex history since they have an ‘organic’ quality whereby the books continued to be copied into and altered whilst they were in regular use. The first part of the thesis (chapters two to six) examines the physical characteristics of the manuscripts by considering the books’ construction, the traits of the copyists, and the way material was gradually added. Paper and scribal analysis, as well as general cataloguing work, are used to identify the contents and explore the layers of copying. The second part of the thesis (chapters seven and eight) looks at the function of the books and considers the collection within its eighteenth-century context. Documentary sources are considered alongside various elements of the books to establish how the partbooks were used in performance. The Chapel’s method of partbook organisation is then compared with the organisation of similar collections at other choral foundations (including those with which the Chapel had strong connections).

Orientador: Gilda Figueiredo Potugal Gouvea / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-22T04:20:38Z (GMT). The "1845 manuscript on List" still represents a gap in the discussions on the formation of Marx's thought, and especially of his economic thought. It is rarely mentioned even among German-speaking specialists, we have not found any reference to the text in the Brazilian literature. First, in order to introduce it to the debate, it was necessary to translate the text into Portuguese. The translation work, in turn, was faced with the problem of editing, which led us to collate the first German edition directly with the manuscript. Besides the translation, this text is structured to provide a critical apparatus. In the introduction to the text we inform the features of the manuscript, such as size, transmission status and internal structure, and refer to the circumstances, dating, motivation and purpose of the writing, the origins of Marx's debate with List and the positioning of the writing in the author'. The analysis presents the preserved structure of the text and shows the footsteps of its concatenation, explaining and grouping the fundamental issues, linearly from beginning to end. In attachments we have listed materials that assist us in understanding the specific themes and history of the same, as well as the translation of part of the Second Speech in Elberfeld, of Engels, and basic information on the life of List and his book / Doutorado / Sociologia / Doutor em Sociologia

About what not due fit: repetition and difference in the production and reception of Tutaméia

Mônica Fernanda Rodrigues Gama 29 October 2008 (has links)
Terceiras Estórias is the one of Guimarães Rosas works that shows his preoccupation with the materiality of the book and about its reception. To achieve this goal he explored textual elements that create intermediary spaces between the book and the reader, leading the latter to consider the time of the books production. Following clues about Rosas practice of writing, we intend to consider the composition of the literary manuscript and its reflection on the narrative problems proposed to the reader in the texts Desenredo and Sobre a escova e a dúvida.

Evaluation of the crowdsourcing method for manuscript transcription.

Vikhrova, Anne 06 December 2017 (has links)
Projects in digital humanities increasingly employ public-oriented collaboration methods such as crowdsourcing to achieve objectives that include research, conservation and scholarly editing in the humanities and social sciences. For example, crowdsourcing presents an opportunity to quicken the pace of progress for transcription projects for research communities that have traditionally operated within closed circuits. Some important questions raised by researchers and scholars concern the benefits of using this method and in particular the quality of results that can be obtained. Meanwhile, literature that evaluates the efficacy of crowdsourcing for digital humanities projects is insufficient. Questions as to whether the public can produce material that can be used for scholarly editions, in which cases, for which types of projects, and how much post-processing or corrections will be required, continue to occupy discussions on the matter. This doctoral thesis will examine the potential benefits of crowdsourced transcription for scholarly editing projects in the digital humanities. Firstly, by exploring the technologies and techniques available to render online transcription in XML possible. Secondly, by developing and testing an online transcription platform, which will allow to examine user needs for collaborative work environments based on user responses and existing industrial crowdsourcing environments. Thirdly, the data collected will be subjected to digital analysis to compare the productions of non-expert transcribers to those of expert transcribers on the basis of document distance measurements. The results will be interpreted to determine the potential benefits of crowdsourcing for digital scholarly editing projects. Finally, the work will conclude by discussing the implications of current work and presenting opportunities for future research in the field.

MADONY BYZANTSKÉHO TYPU V ČESKÉ KNIŽNÍ MALBĚ 13. STOLETÍ, DESKOVÉ MALBĚ 14. STOLETÍ A JEJICH "DRUHÝ ŽIVOT" V BAROKU / BYZANTINE TYPE OF MADONNAS IN CZECH 13TH CENTURY ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPTS, 14TH CENTURY PANEL PAINTING AND THEIR " SECOND LIFE " IN THE ART OF BAROQUE

Bala, Alice January 2018 (has links)
The ambition of the proposed paper is to summarize all of the up to date information regarding Byzantine types of Madonnas in art production of the Czech lands. First part of this work takes aim at the period of early to high Middle Ages, paying speccial attention to the first Marian depictions in some of the illuminated manuscripts of the 13th century showing deep influences by the contemporary Byzantine or Italo-Byzantine art. Second part of this paper deals with 14th century wood panel paintings, depicting half figures of Virgin Mary with or without her child Jesus, again the attention focuses on those showing close relations to eastern Icons. Final part of this work works with the herritage of the passed, rich era of Marian devotion, being reborn in Czech Barock religious practice. Keywords Madonna, Virgin Mary, illuminated manuscripts, 13th century, wood panel painting, 14th century, Icon, Byzantine influences, Barock

Les archives de Jean Tardieu / Jean Tardieu Archives

Hautois, Delphine 30 November 2018 (has links)
Resting on a complete inventory of the Tardieu archives stored at the Institut Mémoires de l'édition contemporaine (a research institute dedicated to the preservation of 20th century literary documents), this research attempts to chronicle how he shaped his poetic style and his creative persona. From his first unpublished experimental work to later collections of prose, poetry and theatre, his self-fashioned figure as a writer, in a tailor-made literary history and literary field, progressively emerges. Along the way his theoretical interrogations, his rhetorical habits, his recurring images come into view. Jean Tardieu’s editing choices are, in this respect, particularly significant: studying the evolution of his selection principles in the composition of his collections, when they were first published and in the successive editions, can help reveal his various aesthetic and biographic strategies.

Investigating the Margins: Bernard of Parma’s Glossa ordinaria on Religious Marginality in the High Middle Ages

Liu, Yanchen January 2022 (has links)
The Glossa ordinaria compiled by Bernard of Parma (d. 1266) on Pope Gregory IX’s 1234 Decretales, commonly known as the Liber extra, is among the most influential canon law commentaries during the High and Late Middle Ages. Interrogating this source, this dissertation examines the legal status of selected marginal religious groups in medieval Europe—apostates, heretics, Jews, Muslims, and practitioners of magic. Soon after its emergence, Bernard’s Glossa was studied by law school students—that is, future Church judges, lawyers, inquisitors, and even popes—from the mid-thirteenth century on, and was the standard commentary copied into the margins of manuscripts of the Decretales. Yet, modern scholarship ignores this source almost entirely. This study treats this issue through transcription, translation, comparison, and analysis of texts from selected medieval manuscripts of the Decretales and the Glossa, including the earliest surviving exemplars (c. 1240). It explicates the Romano-canonical judicial terminology and principles employed by the Glossa. Furthermore, it scrutinizes the Glossa’s manner of using legal allegations and tracks the excerpts which it inherits from commentarial literature. Finally, it examines how the Glossa treats the selected marginal religious groups, and thus uncovers how this source can serve as a window for us into medieval society from the perspective of the learned or academic law. More broadly, this work contributes to a fuller understanding of the development of medieval canonical science, the operation of the ecclesiastical-legal system, and the mechanism through which the institutional Church defined its own religious boundaries.

The De Villers Book of Hours

Williams, Kenneth R. 01 May 1996 (has links)
Created in France during the late fifteenth century, the illuminations, text, and family genealogy (added by one of many owners) found in De Villers Book of Hours make it an excellent example among other French books of hours from this period. In addition to acting as a repository of the style and iconography of French fifteenth-century illumination, the book's rich decorative program and varied textual content provide a remarkable document of contemporary devotional piety. This thesis provides the first detailed description and analysis of the De Villers Book of Hours. Following a description of books of hours in general, the overall makeup of the De Villers Hours is addressed, including the decorative program with a suggested method and example for description, a sample of textual transcription, comments on the provenance, a brief discussion of the family genealogy, and a concluding section with a sample collection register and worksheet for cataloging.
