Information visualisation and data analysis using web mash-up systems

The arrival of E-commerce systems have contributed greatly to the economy and have played a vital role in collecting a huge amount of transactional data. It is becoming difficult day by day to analyse business and consumer behaviour with the production of such a colossal volume of data. Enterprise 2.0 has the ability to store and create an enormous amount of transactional data; the purpose for which data was collected could quite easily be disassociated as the essential information goes unnoticed in large and complex data sets. The information overflow is a major contributor to the dilemma. In the current environment, where hardware systems have the ability to store such large volumes of data and the software systems have the capability of substantial data production, data exploration problems are on the rise. The problem is not with the production or storage of data but with the effectiveness of the systems and techniques where essential information could be retrieved from complex data sets in a comprehensive and logical approach as the data questions are asked. Using the existing information retrieval systems and visualisation tools, the more specific questions are asked, the more definitive and unambiguous are the visualised results that could be attained, but when it comes to complex and large data sets there are no elementary or simple questions. Therefore a profound information visualisation model and system is required to analyse complex data sets through data analysis and information visualisation, to make it possible for the decision makers to identify the expected and discover the unexpected. In order to address complex data problems, a comprehensive and robust visualisation model and system is introduced. The visualisation model consists of four major layers, (i) acquisition and data analysis, (ii) data representation, (iii) user and computer interaction and (iv) results repositories. There are major contributions in all four layers but particularly in data acquisition and data representation. Multiple attribute and dimensional data visualisation techniques are identified in Enterprise 2.0 and Web 2.0 environment. Transactional tagging and linked data are unearthed which is a novel contribution in information visualisation. The visualisation model and system is first realised as a tangible software system, which is then validated through different and large types of data sets in three experiments. The first experiment is based on the large Royal Mail postcode data set. The second experiment is based on a large transactional data set in an enterprise environment while the same data set is processed in a non-enterprise environment. The system interaction facilitated through new mashup techniques enables users to interact more fluently with data and the representation layer. The results are exported into various reusable formats and retrieved for further comparison and analysis purposes. The information visualisation model introduced in this research is a compact process for any size and type of data set which is a major contribution in information visualisation and data analysis. Advanced data representation techniques are employed using various web mashup technologies. New visualisation techniques have emerged from the research such as transactional tagging visualisation and linked data visualisation. The information visualisation model and system is extremely useful in addressing complex data problems with strategies that are easy to interact with and integrate.

O presente trabalho é uma tentativa de elucidar o que eu considero um fenômeno na literatura, os mash-ups. Em 2009 a lista dos livros mais vendidos da New York Times trouxe um novo romance intitulado Orgulho e Preconceito e Zombies. A editora Quirk Books apresentou como autor Seth Grahame-Smith e a romancista inglesa há muito falecida Jane Austen como co-autora. O livro combina o texto clássico de Austen de 1813 com elementos da moderna ficção de zumbis. O objetivo desta pesquisa é estudar a (desconcertante) possibilidade de alguém modificar uma obra-prima. A autora ainda está presente em seu texto, ou aquele que insere, remixa e acrescenta ao trabalho é o real autor? Esta e outras perguntas são investigadas. Com o aporte teórico de Sanders (2006), Shields (2010), Lessig (2004), faz-se a investigação sobre adaptações, colagens, apropriações e direitos autorais. O romance aqui analisado pertence à literatura não mais protegida por direitos autorais e, portanto, é considerado apto para modificações, permitindo, assim, a justaposição que está no centro do gênero literário sob escrutínio. O tremendo sucesso comercial deste mash-up serve para mostrar que não só Jane Austen, mas também os mortos-vivos são transformados em mercadorias, o que conduz às possíveis conclusões de que Austen vende, os zumbis vendem, e ambos dão aos leitores algo que estes anseiam, talvez maneiras mais suaves, romance, costumes e valores de outrora; no caso dos mortos-vivos, eles exploram temas que transgredem e ameaçam nosso senso de asseio e decoro, particularmente no tocante ao corpo, às nossas identidades, e a nossa mortalidade. Através de olhares como o de Žižek (2008), pode-se inferir que o sucesso do livro pode ser visto como um tributo ao poder do marketing viral, ao interesse duradouro e contínuo em Jane Austen, e ao atual zeitgeist zumbi. / The present research brings an attempt to elucidate what I consider a phenomenon in literature, the mash-ups. Is the author still present in her text or the one who inserts, remixes and adds to the work is the actual author? This and other questions are investigated. With the theoretical approach of Sanders (2006), Shields (2010), Lessig (2004), and others, there is an investigation on adaptations, collage, appropriations and authorial rights. The novel analyzed here is literature no longer protected by copyright and therefore considered apt for tweaking, thus allowing for the juxtaposition which is at the core of the literary genre under scrutiny. This mash-up‘s tremendous commercial success goes to show that not only Jane Austen, but also the undead have become commodities, which leads the possible conclusions that Austen sells, and zombies sell, and they all give readers something they crave for, perhaps gentle manners, romance, mores and values long gone; and in the case of the living-dead, they explore themes that transgress and threaten our sense of cleanliness and propriety, particularly referencing the body, our identities, and our mortality. The body is essential both in the sketching and in the final experience. More specifically, In this degree project I am investigating how body, furniture and puffer jacket can relate to each other. How a puffer jacket collection can be perceived spatially and what will it be then.

Hitler comedy / Hitlerhoff

The critical component of this thesis, “Hitler Comedy”, is a dissertation on the intersection between comedy theory in general, and the specific practice of Hitler comedy. Focusing on Bertolt Brecht’s play The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (1941; directed by Heiner Müller in 1995), and Dani Levy’s film Mein Führer: the Truly Truest Truth About Adolf Hitler (2007), my argument critiques existing “instrumentalist” theories of comedy as didactic and morally reductive. Moving beyond prevailing conceptualisations of comedy as corrective and/or forgiving, my dissertation emphasises the centrality of pleasure, displeasure and disruption for audience members in the process of their experiencing Hitler comedies. / The creative component of this thesis is a script and a DVD recording of Hitlerhoff, a theatre and multimedia work that combines the characters of Adolf Hitler and David Hasselhoff into a single hybrid figure. Hitlerhoff is a spectacular black comedy that uses comedy to entertain and unsettle, and to disrupt audience members’ expectations. Hitlerhoff is a practical demonstration of the ability of “irresponsible” comedy to act as a potent catalyst for “responsible”, ethically engaged discussions.
