Modeling and vibration analysis of a rocking–mass gyroscope system

Ansari, Masoud 01 April 2008 (has links)
Rocking-mass gyroscope consists of an assembly of four cantilever beams with a rigid mass attached to them in the middle subjected to base rotations. Due to the gyroscope effect, the beams undergo coupled flexural-torsional vibrations. The main goal of the research is to develop an accurate model of such a system and along this line a detailed mathematical modeling of the gyroscope is developed. The equations of motion clearly show the presence of the gyroscopic couplings in all cantilever beams. A computer simulation model in its most general form has been developed, to analyze the effectiveness of this type of gyroscope. / UOIT

An Experimental and Quantitative Analysis of E. coli Stress Response: Metabolic and Antibiotic Stressors

Jalli, Inderpreet Singh January 2014 (has links)
<p>A series of experiments and mathematical models explore the response of the bacteria E. coli to stressors. Experimentally, the effect of L-homocysteine, a non-protein amino acid, is explored, and via math models, the effect of trimethoprim, a common antibiotic, is also explored. Previous work on L-homocysteine labels it a stressor, and this assertion is refined via the presented work. A mathematical model that improves on a previous work published by Kwon et al. (2008) explores the response of E. coli to various supplementations of amino acids when exposed to trimethoprim. New methods of developing antibiotics and therapeutic drug treatments are also explored.</p> / Dissertation

Thermal Interface Materials (TIM) for Applications in Microelectronics

Aliakbari, Shahla 06 November 2014 (has links)
A major challenge in the formulation of thermal interface materials (TIM), used in the microelectronics industry to facilitate heat transfer from an electronic package to a heat sink, is to ensure that the material is electrically insulating while achieving a high thermal conductivity. Several parameters influence thermal conductivity, but it will be shown that proper selection of the polymers serving as binders and additives in the formulation is important. The incorporation of electrically insulated metallic particles as fillers can also help to increase the thermal conductivity of a TIM. This Dissertation is concerned with exploring different strategies for the preparation of thermally conducting, but electrically insulating TIM compositions. Among these, the synthesis and the application of functionalized (telechelic) poly(ethylene oxide), PEO, in the preparation of TIM will be explored in more details. To achieve this goal, we conducted the synthesis of telechelic oligomers containing a primary amine functional group at one end, and investigated their influence on the properties of metallic surfaces such as copper. The results obtained indicate that the PEO-NH2 oligomers can bind to copper metal and/or the oxide layer at its surface, leading to much lowered electrical conductivity for the particles. The composition of TIM formulations was optimized in a systematic fashion using these materials and effective thermal conductivities reaching up to 9.4 W/mK were attained, much higher than for two commercial TIM used as benchmarks (1.5 W/mK for Arctic Silver 5, and 3.5 W/mK for ShinEtsu X23-7783D). Moreover, thinner layers (down to 0.004 mm) were achieved for the materials developed as compared to commercial TIM (0.07 mm). Additionally, we used a computational approach based on the method of random resistor networks to predict the effective thermal conductivity of the TIM. We studied the effects of mono- and polydispersed filler particle size distributions, as well as geometry (spherical particles and flakes). The influence of the PEO-NH2 oligomers acting as surfactants on the effective thermal conductivity was also investigated by defining surfactant concentration-dependent thermal conductivities. We finally compared the results of the numerical simulations with our experimental data and obtained excellent agreement for most compositions.

Modeling the large-scale electrical activity of the brain

Rennie, Christopher John January 2001 (has links)
Modeling of brain activity is often seen as requiring great computing power. However in the special case of modeling scalp EEG it is possible to adopt a continuum approximation for the cortex, and then to use the techniques of wave physics to describe its consequent large-scale dynamics. The model incorporates the following critical components: two classes of neurons (excitatory and inhibitory), the typical number and strength of connections between these two classes, the corresponding connections within the thalamus and between the thalamus and cortex, the time constants and basic physiology of neurons, and the propagation of activity between neurons. Representing the immense intricacy of brain anatomy and physiology with suitable summary equations and average parameter values has meant that the model is able to capture the essential characteristics of EEG and ERPs, and to do so in a computationally manageable way.

[en] MATHEMATICAL MODELING AND SIMULATION OF A HYDROCYCLONE MODEL / [pt] MODELAGEM MATEMÁTICA, SIMULAÇÃO E AJUSTE DO MODELO DE UM HIDROCICLONE

JUAN SERGIO ROMERO SAENZ 29 June 2012 (has links)
[en] The present work is realted to the mathematical modeling and computacional simulation of flow through hydrocyclons. The present model assumes the air core being a free surface of Young-Laplace type. As the characterisctic of the flow suggests, the model considers a turbuleny diffusion, this fact is essential to have a good agreement with experimental data. The velocity and pressure with the shape and localization of the interface are approzximated. For the above approximation a langrangian grid is used to characterize the free interface, and an eulerian grid for calculating the velocity and pressure fields thorough a finite-volume method. The approximation of the interface is achieved using an iterative procedure. An extensive comparison of model predictions against experimental data is presented together with some numerical results.

The goals of this thesis are the theoretical study of the Statistic Education's didactical basis and its integration with the Critical Education and the Mathematical Modeling and application of this integration with the development of pedagogical projects toward this end. In the research of the theoretical basis of the Statistic's didactic, we observe that the instruction planning must be able to develop three capacities: literacy, reasoning and statistical thinking. The Mathematical Modeling and the work with projects are used as a pedagogical strategy to create the education projects looking for build up these capacities. The Critical Education is present in the projects with the problematization and the thematization, the real data manipulation, contextualized, the discussion stimulation, the non-hierarchyzation, the democratic values acquired in the classroom, the capacity stimulation of the students to be critical, the reflexive knowledge valuation and the student preparation to explain the world, the practicing speech of the social responsibility and the critical language, stimulating the individual freedom, the ethics and social justice. Putting together these ideas, the Critical Statistics Education's concept appears in this thesis in two projects, presented here.

Multigrain and multiphase mathematical model for prediction of the equiaxed solidification.

Davi Teves de Aguiar 21 March 2011 (has links)
Properties of components obtained by solidification processes depend strongly on the final grain structure. In the past few decades, there has been a significant breakthrough in the mathematical modeling of metallic alloy solidification to predict the grain macrostructure. Nevertheless, the so-called deterministic models are still not capable of modeling the individual growth of grains throughout the solidification time. The objective of the present work it to propose, implement, and evaluate a multiphase and multigrain mathematical model of equiaxed solidification in binary alloys. The equations of the model are based on the macroscopic conservation equations of mass, energy, and chemical species. The main feature that distinguishes the present model from other models available in the literature is the consideration of the growth of individual grains of different sizes, and of the dendritic or globulitic growth. The macroscopic conservation equations of mass, energy, and chemical species were applied separately to each class of grains of different sizes. The results obtained from the present model were compared with those from a model that also simulates the individual growth of grains, but was developed only for the early stages of solidification, during which there is globulitic growth. Next, the results were compared with those from a similar model, but which does not consider the individual growth of grains, following only a grain of average size. A parametric analysis was carried out with the present model, which was later used to simulate different experiments presented by several authors. The model was capable of simulating several phenomena, including the globulitic and dendritic growth for each class of grain, during the whole solidification time. The results obtained with the present model reproduce very accurately the cooling curves and the prediction of grain size obtained from a model that considers only a grain of average size. The present model results are in close agreement with measurements of average grain size and grain size distribution in an commercially pure Al with different additions of Al-5%Ti-1%B.
