Fallen feathers in Thunder Bay: How Canada's newspapers implicate Indigenous youth

Gabriele, Chelsea Brianne 06 1900 (has links)
This study asks how the media perpetuates the cycle of racism, colonialism and stereotyping of Indigenous youth in Thunder Bay, and how Indigenous news sources participate in giving voice to Indigenous peoples. The research methodology is a discourse analysis examining both mainstream and Indigenous newspaper articles on the subject of the First Nations youth deaths in Thunder Bay. The methodology is also influenced by critical and decolonizing theories. Findings show that Indigenous newspaper articles are overall more inclusive of Indigenous voice, therefore providing an Indigenous perspective on the issue of First Nations youth dying in Thunder Bay and leaving out racist portrayals. On the other hand, non-Indigenous newspaper articles include less Indigenous voice and use the opinion of individuals in powerful positions. They also tend to portray Indigenous people in a negative light when compared to Indigenous newspapers. Outcomes from this research include implications for social workers such as: developing an understanding of how the media perpetuates racism, colonialism and stereotyping against Indigenous youth, advocating for and empowering Indigenous youth so they can come together and fight for change in First Nations education, and improving education within schools of social work regarding advocacy in the media. / Thesis / Master of Social Work (MSW)

The media which tries to territorialize the Ói Nóis´s practice throught the use of clichés and words of order, orders and commands which enforce an order; and the actions´s group as a minor mode, movement of deterritorialization where the sense becomes production, to go beyond representation´s idea. The anaysis was based on philosophy of difference, more precisely the Deleuze and Guattari´s work, A Thousand Plateaus, with concepts such as becoming, ritornelo, body without organs, rhizoma. The work trying also to detect some procedures of Ói Nóis´s theatrical language as means to produce new subjectivisations´s forms. The creation´s act and the art as a becoming space, which breaks the fixed significations and the values established by the majority / O foco desta tese é o estudo da relação dos discursos da mídia com a ação do grupo teatral Ói nóis Aqui Traveiz, de Porto Alegre.

The emergence of social media discourse among Ghanainan University Students: implications for the acquisition or academic literacy

Anku, Joyce Senya Ama 18 May 2017 (has links)
PhD (English) / Department of English / Language, in general, has always been evolving and dynamic; the same can be said of the English language. Spontaneously, but not unexpected though, since the beginning of this 21st century which saw the introduction of the internet, there have been noteworthy manifestations in the structure and use of varied forms of the English language on social media. This study aimed at exploring, describing and explaining the linguistic features associated with the new communicative order – social media – and their communicative functions, vis-à-vis their impact on Ghanaian university students’ acquisition of academic literacy. To do this, the study adopted a qualitative method and an ethnographic approach in understanding the netnographic realities on social media. In addition, the sociocultural theory and the theory of error analysis served as the philosophical underpinnings which guided the research. Participants of the study (largely undergraduate students) were drawn from two universities in Ghana – the University of Ghana, and Valley View University. The total sample size was one hundred and eighty eight (188). It was found that frequent and prolonged use of social media discourse does impact negatively on the academic literacy of students. The findings also indicate that social media use overtime becomes addictive and this directly results in limited time span and low attention span of students. Again, the study found that over engagement on social media discourse leads to a general breakdown in both sentence and discourse structure of academic writing resulting into uncontrolled deviant spellings, omission and misuse of punctuation marks and capitalisation, as well as a high level of colloquialism. Despite these negative influences, it was found that there are some positive potentials of social media that can be harnessed to support academic literacy. The study, thus, recommends that the affordances of social media communication should be retooled to support the teaching and learning of academic literacy.

Role českých veřejnoprávních médií v diskurzu důchodové reformy / The role of the Czech public media in the pension reform discourse

Tomíčková, Adéla January 2011 (has links)
The thesis 'The role of the Czech public media in the pension reform discourse' aims to provide a critical reflection on the role of the Czech Television and the Czech Radio in the debate over the changes in the pension scheme of the Czech Republic. The principal method used for that is the discourse analysis, which comprises quality and quantity analysis of the media output, interviews and personal observation. The research project focuses on the context the debate over the pension reform occurs and how it is presented in the public media. The theoretical part summarizes the theoretical concepts used in the research project, i.e. concepts from the field of public policy, social policy, mass communication and discourse analysis. The empirical part examines the institutional development of the pension reform, its variations in political, scholarly (Czech and international) and public discourse. The major part of the research project is based on the discourse analysis of the pension reform discourse in the Czech public media. The role of the public media in the pension reform discourse is deduced on the basis of the theoretical and empirical parts.

Interaktion und Medien: 20. Arbeitstagung zur Gesprächsforschung am Institut für deutsche Sprache Mannheim, 29.–31.03.2017

Meiler, Matthias 11 April 2022 (has links)

Kritická mediální pedagogika - teoretická východiska a přínos pro mediální výchovu / Critical media pedagogy - theoretical underpinning and contribution to media education

Valenta, Petr January 2016 (has links)
Critical media pedagogy - theoretical underpinnigs and contribution to media education Dissertation Mgr. Petr Valenta Keywords critical theory, critical media pedagogy, media literacy, critical pedagogy, media, ideology, discourse, power, symbolic power, knowledge Abstract The theoretical dissertation analyzes the traditional media education model issues, which derives from the orientation of media literacy on the dominant paradigm of media effects research in media studies. Media education takes the "media effects concept" and uses it to organize its own teaching practice. Theoretical dependence on media studies and the concept media effects leads media education to protectionism and normativity, which is reflected in the directive establishment of knowledge, skills and values pupils may acquire. This situation has negative effect on efforts of developing critical media thinking as independent on social authorities. Moreover, media education potentially reproduces the dominant modes of knowledge about media and society, without revealing them as social constructions. The theoretical basis for changing the paradigm of media education to become more critical and transformative practice able to form the student's personality as an autonomous, critical- thinking and committed citizen is presented in the second...

Тактики дискредитации политических деятелей в дискурсе французских медиа (на примере публикаций в журнале «Charlie Hebdo») : магистерская диссертация / Tactics of discrediting politicians in the discourse of the French media (on the example of publications in the magazine "Charlie Hebdo")

А., Makarova, D. A. January 2023 (has links)
The research is devoted to the study of tactics of discrediting and ways of their implementation in the French magazine of political satire "Charlie Hebdo". The object of the research is text fragments of analytical articles and comments published in the French magazine "Charlie Hebdo". The objective of the research is to study the communicative tactics and ways of their implementation used to discredit politicians in the magazine "Charlie Hebdo". The research material consists of 156 text fragments extracted from 112 articles published in electronic versions and on the official website of the magazine from the end of 2021 to April 2023. In total, in the French magazine "Charlie Hebdo", we identified 187 cases of implementation of tactics of discrediting politicians (50 universal, 88 direct and 49 indirect). The most productive are the direct tactics of creating the image of the "dark present" and its varieties (17 cases of use), as well as the direct tactic of exposure (14 cases of use), the universal tactic of evidential diminution of authority (16 cases of use) and the indirect tactic "trap on contradictions" (13 cases of use). The analysis of the empirical basis convincingly shows that in the media political discourse, tactical schemes often intertwine and create hybrid forms of implementation. According to the study, universal discrediting tactical schemes are mostly with the help of metaphors, hyperbole, interjections, irony, rhetorical questions, emotionally colored and colloquial vocabulary, ellipses and assonances. Direct tactics are implemented through the use of a large number of expressive and even invective vocabulary, metaphors, antiphrases, irony, rhetorical questions and exclamations, parallel and homogeneous constructions. Indirect tactics are implemented by referring to rhetorical questions, repetitions, parallel and negative constructions, metaphors, allusions, irony and paraphrases.
