The (un)certainties of science : an analysis of the representations of medical science in "Fantástico" tv show

Rubbo R. Rondelli, Daniella, 1973- 07 August 2014 (has links)
Orientador: Maria José Rodrigues Faria Coracini / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-26T12:09:00Z (GMT). Based on a discursive-deconstructivist theoretical perspective, and working with some psychoanalytical references, this thesis aims at analyzing representations of science that emerge in the Brazilian TV Show named Fantástico, by looking for their possible similarities with religious representations, and questioning the assumption of Western logocentric culture that has dichotomized these two fields. For that, our analytical work consisted in the analysis of medicine-related news that were conveyed in the TV show within the period of one year. Agreeing with Foucauldian terms that all truth comes from relations of power-knowledge, which are always fluid and dynamic, we pointed out that since the seventeenth century, with Descartes, the relations of power-knowledge have been mobilized to strengthen the role of science at the expense of religion in knowledge production. However, in contemporary times, the spectacle culture emerges as another important force that seems to affect these relationships in two ways. Firstly, in a way that scientists enjoy credibility and a peculiar status in our society, not because they are the promised ones by science, which are said to unravel pre-existing truths, but because contemporary discursive formations offer a privileged place to the science¿s discourse, which operates in order to make us believe in truths that it creates. Secondly, in a way that accredits journalists a prominent place in contemporary discursive formations, not only because of their given credibility, often confronted, but also due to their multitudinous reach, and especially for their power to decide who will be given the right to speak. All things considered, we intend to reflect on how representations of science built up on Fantástico tv show engender power relationships and possibilities of resistance / Doutorado / Linguagem e Tecnologia / Doutora em Lingüística Aplicada

The development and sustainability of indigenous African language newspapers : ba case study of Seipone, Nthavela and Ngoho News

Malatji, Edgar Julius January 2014 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. (Media Studies)) --University of Limpopo, 2014 / There is a conspicuous importance of having newspapers that publish in the indigenous African languages for the indigenous population in a democratic dispensation. The indigenous African languages are key components of their respective cultures. The survival of the language is, in some way, dependent on the print media (newspapers) (Salawu, 2004:8). In addition, the indigenous language newspapers have cardinal roles of promoting previously marginalised languages, preserving indigenous cultures and upholding democracy. Nevertheless, these newspapers are struggling to sustain themselves in the print media industry. It is, therefore, critically important to examine the factors that adversely affect the sustainability of these newspapers.

Brain drain, exodus and chicken run : media discourses on emigration

Bright, Sue-Ann January 2005 (has links)
This paper explores the discourses of emigration in a South African daily newspaper from 1988 to 2001, and discusses the implications of these discourses on the way in which emigration is constructed within South African society In this paper, Potter and Wetherell 's (1987) approach to discourse analysis is utilized. It makes use of interpretative repertoires, to explore the functions and consequences of the discourses. The discursive framework thereby reveals the different subject positions related to nationalism, race and class. It is argued that economics and notions of culture and social class, do more than provide a useful medium through which the phenomenon of emigration can be understood. They also support the affirmations of certain groups of people above others, by claiming that emigration is unpatriotic and disloyal. This paper concludes by identifying the negative connotations of media discourses in the construction of emigration and acknowledges that many alternate constructions are silenced in this matter.

Construction et fonctionnement de la mise en scène de l'actualité politique par le discours satirique : spécificités de l'approche des processus d'information et de communication dans "Le Canard enchaîné" / How politics and current affairs are presented through satire : the specific approach of "Le Canard enchaîné" to the communication process and the treatment of news

Halloy, Didier 13 November 2014 (has links)
How politics and current affairs are presented through satire : the specific approach of "Le Canard enchaîné" to the communication process and the treatment of news.

Využití reklamních spotů ve výuce němčiny jako cizího jazyka / Use of Commercials in Teaching German as a Foreign Language

Kopůncová, Ráchel January 2020 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the use of commercials in teaching of German as a foreign language. Its aim is to describe the didactic potential of working with commercials and to find out whether teachers employ them in their practice and how they perceive them. The theoretical part of the thesis considers the key concepts related to this issue, the use of commercials in education in terms of criteria for their appropriate selection and advantages and disadvantages of their employment in teaching. The dominating subject of the practical part is a research survey among teachers who teach German as a second foreign language at the second level of primary education. The research was carried out by means of a questionnaire survey and an expert assessment. Its aim was to document the current situation of the employment of commercials in teaching and, based on an expert assessment of the didactic processing of two commercials, to clarify how teachers approach this issue. The results show that 70 % of teachers use commercials in their lessons, although not very intensively. Surprisingly, commercials are used more often by older teachers with many years of experience. The presented didactic processing would be used by most teachers in their professional practice. Keywords: Audiovisual Media, Advertising,...

Editorial Policies and the development of isiXhosa :how is isiXhosa being developed in post-Apartheid South Africa by Private Print Media Institutions

Njeje, Mbuyekezo January 2018 (has links)
The Maintenance and Revival of isiXhosa print media in South Africa has been left to conglomerate media companies that do not have editorial policies that address their development. These companies are preserving isiXhosa the language they invest in isiXhosa print media to make money of the language. The development of the language is not catered for they are in the business of copies of magazines and newspapers. However, they should not be faulted for this area of indigenous language print media has long been neglected by black business men. From the history of African language print media it shows that this media is sustainably profitable if one is to look at purely the side of media. Ilanga lase Natal is testament to that it is now 116 years the paper has been in print it change ownership several times but that did not prompt the paper to cease existing. This is what unfortunately has happened to isiXhosa newspapers that were famous and influential in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It seems that once they got into the exchange of ownership conflict would ensue this is probably because they were very influential politically and everybody was interested in controlling its audience. Now isiXhosa finds itself to be at the mercy of media companies that are English and Afrikaans language oriented and inclined whose policies only recognize the two languages. In this situation isiXhosa finds itself to be and becomes an artificial minority language in these institutions. This is not to say that if maybe a BEE consortium was to invest in the isiXhosa language print media they were not going to be profit and sales oriented. However, they would be inclined in paying attention to the development of language rather language preservation. The reference to BEE business men in the paper should be understood in relation to the state abandonment and spectacular stagnation of isiXhosa print media and therefor the language of isiXhosa. / NG (2020)

Winged words : a descriptive and quantitative study of figurative speech in the subtitles of 7de Laan

Morden, Lizl 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)-- Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates subtitling in 7de Laan, comparing episodes from 2007 to episodes from 2010 with a focus on figurative language. It is a quantitative, descriptive study and aims to determine the overall adequacy or acceptability of the subtitles, the translation strategies used, how figurative language and language varieties are translated and compares findings from 2007 to those of 2010 to establish whether there has been a change in approach over this period. The source text, 7de Laan, is discussed in Chapter 1, which also outlines how the study will proceed, the research problem and the research questions. Chapters 2 and 3 are the literature review of the relevant theories. Chapter 2 covers Descriptive Translation Studies and the translation of figurative language. The challenges particular to subtitling, specifically the constraints of the medium, are discussed in Chapter 3. The following two chapters are the analysis and each begins with the methodology used for that analysis. Chapter 4 is a macrolevel analysis of the corpus and determines the acceptability/adequacy of the subtitles, their governing translation norms and analyses the translation strategies used. More specific questions are answered in Chapter 5, which analyses the translation of figurative language, the representation of language varieties in the subtitles and the influence catering for a hearing-impaired audience has on translation decisions. The findings indicate that the subtitles of 7de Laan are mostly acceptable and that acceptability increases in 2010. The translation strategies used and their frequency of usage are similar over the years. However, there are slight changes: in 2010 there is less literal translation, more omission and fewer figurative-specific translation strategies are used. The findings further show that there is less figurative language in the subtitles in 2010. Additionally, there is a tendency of levelling out figurative language in both years which increases in 2010. The analysis of language varieties indicates that for sociolects, age markers influence the subtitles more than race markers do. Idiolects are rendered but how much of an idiolect is rendered depends on its markers. The analysis also finds that subtitling for hearing-impaired audiences is a significant factor in the translation process over and above the spatiotemporal constraint of subtitling.
