What do you think of others who pursue cosmetic surgery? influences associated with perceptions of cosmetic surgery

Vergara, Angela 01 May 2012 (has links)
In the current climate in which it seems like popular media determines normality, it is not surprising to find that reality television, especially programs geared towards elective cosmetic surgery, are correlated with the decision making processes associated with actually pursuing cosmetic surgery. Research suggests that attitudes towards cosmetic surgery have changed dramatically due to the public's exposure to reality makeover shows; these shows have increased the popularity of such procedures and have highlighted and implied that cosmetic surgery is associated with little pain and risk. In this study, I sought to determine if attitudes toward cosmetic surgery vary as a function of ethnicity and gender, as well as examine the influence of the media on openness to pursuing cosmetic surgery. Examining how others view those who pursue elective cosmetic surgery and the variables associated with those who obtain cosmetic surgery will shed light on the processes associated with the decision to pursue the procedures.

“In the footsteps of globalization” : A media ethnographic study about Ethiopian journalism students’ perceptions about television’s influence on their identities and on cultures in Ethiopia.

Gustafsson, Stina, Högberg, Therese January 2013 (has links)
This is a media ethnographic bachelor thesis. It examines journalism students at Bahir Dar University’s perceptions about how television can influence their identities but also cultures and lifestyles in Ethiopia in general. Ethnographic observations, time-use diaries, group interviews and individual interviews were used to gather data. However, the individual interviews are our main method. Our results showed that the journalism students believe that television influence them in various ways: their way of dressing and looking, acting, thinking and being. They also believe that televisions’ ability to change their identities in a bigger context means that cultures and traditions in Ethiopia are changing. The journalism students talk about different phenomenons that have arisen in Ethiopia during the last years, for example homosexuality, new techniques and appliances and new kind of clothes and food. And they say that they believe these phenomenons have arisen in Ethiopia because of media globalization.

Practitioner perspectives and assumptions about the role media plays in communication strategies that aim to change the behaviour of an individual

Erfani-Ghadimi, Nooshin January 2016 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the School of Literature, Language and Media, University of the Witwatersrand in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts by dissertation. 14 March 2016 / The aim of this research is to investigate practitioner perspectives and assumptions about the role media plays in communication strategies that aim to change the behaviour of an individual. It assesses whether these assumptions are consistent with the way the media is actually used in the campaigns of three organisations, and then asks whether there is any correlation between the apparent effectiveness of the campaign and the assumptions of media effect held by practitioners. The purpose is to gain better insight, from a media practitioner’s perspective, into how communication practitioners working on public campaigns understand the impact of the media. Three case studies are analysed, focusing on the use of print, broadcast and the internet to communicate the key messages in the campaigns. The case studies are of highly visible national organizations, each using the media in a particular way, with varying results. The first case study is of SANRAL's E-tag campaign, a campaign which has struggled to achieve widespread public support for e-tolls in Gauteng; the second, Play4Life, is a campaign launched by loveLife, which has in the past been controversial in its use of mass media, and the last, PhuzaWize, is campaign run by Soul City, generally credited with having an evidence-based and strategic approach to its communication strategies. The research found that the communication strategies used in the campaigns are in line with the compliance gaining, the two-step and multi-step, and with communication for social change models, respectively. Practitioners interviewed for this study however showed slightly differing views on the impact of media. Some seemed to understand the mass media through theoretical prisms described in Hovland’s “magic keys” (of attention, compliance and acceptance), whilst others argued that the messaging must change internal psychological makeup of the audience – as described in De Fleur’s psychodynamic model. Whilst one practitioner was an advocate of educational-entertainment and communication for social development approaches, others made repeated references to the power of inter-personal interactions, which are most in line with Lazarsfeld’s two-step and multi-step models. / MT2017

Medias granskning av socialtjänsten : - en kvalitativ undersökningen ur ett socialsekreterarperspektiv

Holtmer, Josefin, Ekström, Frida January 2009 (has links)
<p>Many social services cases have been reviewed in the media during the last years. One of those cases is “Lasse and Karin”, handled by the Social Services in Oskarshamn in 2002. Lasse and Karin had their son taken into custody by the Social Services and the case was reviewed in national media. Through this case the Social Services received much attention, of which most was negative, and their handling of the case was greatly criticized. From this particular case as well as others alike it, our interest developed into this study. This is a qualitative study, based of sex depth interviews with Social Welfare Secretaries in three different municipalities. Our aim with this study is to examine how the Social Welfare Secretaries are influenced by media coverage of their work, focusing on their handling of cases. We also compare how these influences vary between Social Welfare Secretaries who have personal experience of media reviews, and the Social Welfare Secretaries who have not yet been reviewed by the media. The study has a sociological and social psychological perspective. Our purpose with this study is to learn more about how the Social Welfare Secretaries experience the media coverage of social service cases, how the Social Welfare Secretaries relate to media articles and how they, in their occupational role, handle the pressure of being reviewed by media. Some of the people we interviewed have personal experience of media reviews while others only have experienced the reviewing of colleagues through media. The result of the study shows that the Social Welfare Secretaries experience media reviewing as tiring, strenuous and one-sided. Because of this, their trust in the media was low. However, they all agreed that media could be used to promote the Social Services in a positive way. </p>

Politiska åsikter och attityder - hur mediepåverkan skiljer sig mellan äldre och yngre : En kvantitativ studie

Olsson, Pontus, Stålberg, Pi January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to investigate to what extent people experience influence from media and how that affects their attitudes and opinions towards politics, And explore age differences between the age groups 18-25 and 65+. We also wanted to study what influence political media coverage has on the respondents. A quantitative study was made in form of questionnaires that were handed out to 104 respondents, 52 to the age group 18-25 and 52 the age group 65+. The result showed that there are some significant age differences in the experiences of media influence on political views. The older people had a tendency to trust TV and radio more than internet while younger people trust internet to a greater extent. The respondents showed tendencies to believe that other people are more influenced by media than themselves.
