Media for Development: News Media Coverage of Women’s Health within the realm of Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT) in South Africa.

Davidson, Rochelle Renere 16 February 2007 (has links)
Student Number: 0501772G - MA research report - School of Social Sciences - Faculty of Humanities / Development Communication theories suggest that media plays a critical role in the transformation of societies (Melkote, 2003). In line with this thesis, this research discusses the extent to which news media can provide a platform for social change for women’s health issues for the development of South Africa, in the context of the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT). With approximately 29.5% of women attending antenatal clinics throughout the country being HIV-positive, PMTCT is one issue that demonstrates the socio-economic and political complexities of women’s health in the context of development. The qualitative methodological approach involves a thematic content analysis of the news media’s coverage around issues of PMTCT between July 1, 2004 and July 1, 2-005 in two South African newspapers The Star and The Mail and Guardian. The methods also involve a thematisation of interview responses from various stakeholders within news media and the case of PMTCT in South Africa. Empirical studies associate women’s access to media with better health and fertility outcomes, irrespective of various income and education levels (“Ch. 10: The Media”, 2002). This research report explores the extent to which a commercially driven news media can be for development; particularly for HIV-positive pregnant women can voice their perspectives and make empowered decisions for their health.

This study is linked to a larger research plan, developed by Giering (2008-2012), which focuses on projects for textual-discursive processes involved in the spreading of science media oriented to children. The objective of this paper is to analyze the presence of the explanation in those texts, aiming to answer the following questions: What are the linguistic-discursive marks that indicate the presence of the explanation in the corpus? How does the explanation cause effect in those texts? In addition, since we have identified text producers in the context of communication, such as journalists, scientists and specialists, we wonder if / how those different identities of speakers produce any change in the explanations given. The corpus consists of 34 texts published online by the magazines Ciência Hoje das Crianças (Today Children's Science), Recreio (Playtine), Mundo Estranho (Strange World) and by the children's section Folhinha, from the newspaper Folha de São Paulo. Two perspectives of analysis are focused: first, the compositional-sequence structure of the corpus is analyzed, as proposed by Adam (2001, 2008, 2011), verifying how the explanatory movements take place. Then, in a stated-communicational perspective, as proposed by Moirand (1999), we examined features that enabled us to identify, in texts, the structures and forms of the explanation. After data analysis, we found that the explanation is present in the compositional-sequence structure of texts, with the organization of many texts through explanatory dominant sequences, i.e., the explanatory sequence opens and closes the text, or else, with the insertion of fitting explanatory sequences. However, even without the presence of explanatory sequences, we noted text plans that compete in the accomplishment of macro speech act in order to explain. From a stated-communicational perspective, we identified linguistic-discursive clues that signal for an explanatory communication structure which can be represented as follows: A [text producer] explains to B [reader] that S (science) says that (X explains Y). We still found in the text, the explanation of specialized terms, which is related either to the anticipation of a possible demand for explanation by the reader or to the global perspective to explain, to make a phenomenon or a process clear. In relation to the comparative analysis of the texts in the corpus regarding possible observable differences in the explanations produced by journalists and scientists or experts, we found that all texts written by scientists or journalists presented the canonical structure of explanation in compositional-sequence level, which means, the explanatory sequence is the dominant sequence. In the texts written by journalists, there is a higher variation on compositionalsequence structure. We also identified, in the 24 texts written by journalists, 12 occurrences of reported speech through direct citation of the speech produced by scientists and experts, but no entries in the writing produced by scientists or experts

Sluníčkové postavy: reprezentace ženství a mužství v časopise Sluníčko / Characters of Sluníčko: representation of femininity and masculinity in Sluníčko magazine

Frolíková, Lenka January 2016 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with representations of femininity and masculinity in Sluníčko magazine. These representations are examined through analysis of men, women, boys, girls and animal characters. The theoretical part defines gender order of contemporary society and its main characteristic. Then usual gender stereotypes in physical appearance, gender roles, interests and characteristics are defined. The diploma thesis then focuses attention to the gender socialization and concept of representations, which are defined as an instrument of power that helps to maintain androcentric order of society. Also the media are considered as significant and important tool of normalization and socialization. Another dimension of the thesis is mapping the "progress" of representations or comparing the two editions - edition n. 8 (published in 174/75) and edition n. 48 (published in 2015). In research the qualitative media analysis is used. It is focused on texts and picture illustrations of femininity and masculinity, therefore on characters. These characters are analysed through four categories - Physical appearance, Gender roles, Activities and interests, Characteristics, while the central categories are "Vacant" femininity and Counterfactuality, which are present throughout the content of both editions. The Media Representation of Mental Health Awareness to Support Therapy and Recovery for Health Workers: : A Discourse Analysis to Break Mental Health Stigma

Nowfer, Rick Gianluca January 2022 (has links)
The mental health (MH) of health workers during the 2019 pandemic has been severely affected by the disruptive coping and heavy workload management of the Covid crisis. Critical emergency contexts trigger many MH issues and disorders in many health workers who do not have adequate tools and strategies to respond to MH threats when traditional medical methods cannot be provided. Given the successful recovery outcomes obtained against physical illness disorders through physical illness representations, this project was carried out to search for effective discursive strategies within visual representations applied to MH issues. Exploring improved MH representation techniques could lead to finding strategies for informing about the stigma and triggering self-therapy, self-recovery and self-regulation coping mechanisms in health workers against MH threats. This study used discourse analysis to explore four representative YouTube videos portraying health workers and MH issues. The findings show that visual representations, including audiovisual and prosodic elements, rhetoric and storytelling techniques, impact people's psychological and behavioural processes. Once medically tested, these resources could support health professionals and institutions as an extension of the existing scientific methods, treatment and tools dealing with MH issues. E-mental health and digital technologies, which use media representation, could represent the first step to trigger a much more extensive study and scientific debate on the complementary strategy of media representation for MH acknowledgement, therapy and recovery. Nevertheless, additional and more quantitative interlinked medical and media studies on MH issues and representation have to be carried out. Therefore, the need to investigate highlights the need for interdisciplinary collaboration between media and communication, traditional medical therapy research and the participation of all the actors involved.

Obsahová analýza vybraných periodik cílených na VŠ studenty / Content analysis of chosen periodicals targeting at university students

Čmielová, Martina January 2014 (has links)
This thesis presents a complex view of the specifics of the media titles designed for college students in the Czech market, their historical development and current situation. It focuses closer on analysis of commercial media targeting university students. Titles named EuroCampus and Studenta (formerly Stip) were used in comprehensive analysis. The combination of suitably selected quantitative and qualitative methods of research of media content and opinions of audience provides important answers to questions such as: if students have knowledge of this kind of media titles, how the titles are perceived by this audience or if the editorial and advertising content brings original topics and interesting information which may be helpful after graduation. The theory of this thesis is defined by the current situation in the media market in the Czech Republic. Another important theoretical point is creating the typology of student media titles and analyze the history of publishing magazines EuroCampus and Studenta. The practical part is based on theoretical background of methodology explored by thematic agenda, content analysis of selected titles and in-depth interviews with the audience.
