Quel futur pour le passé? Mémoire contemporaine : le retour aux temps mythiques / What Future for the Past? Contemporary MemoryRime, Christophe 18 January 2018 (has links)
For the last thirty years, history, and more generally social sciences, have been upset in their foundation, their knowledge brutalized and their concepts and methods attacked. It has not eluded anybody that this meta-narrative of veridiction which is history, has been losing momentum, prey to blatant disorientation. It seems that what Jean-François Lyotard announced in his work identifying postmodernism in 1979, is on the verge of finding favourable circumstances of realization. Indeed, history, as one of those meta narratives, whose future loss of credibility was predicted by the philosopher, is showing worrisome signs of debilitation of its position of authority within Western contemporary societies. What kind of phenomenon is the root cause of this metamorphosis striking history ? What is the underlying cause of this change in the place of knowledge in a society ? Is it because of a form of acceleration of history, of the destructuring imposed by globalization, of the simultanéisme to which it subjects a world which is more and more connected ? Or is it because of the multiple crises of all kinds- social, economic, political, ideological and religious- which drag history down in the whirlwind created by this tyranny of the present the historian François Hartog coined as présentisme ? This world, constantly subject to profound changes which redefine the place of knowledge within the Western community, is rather puzzling. What kind of future remains for the past ? What is the future of the scientific, historic subject ? The objectives of this dissertation deal with understanding what is going on and comes into conflict with history as a subject, as a connection to the past and above all as a system of historicity. In this regard, the most revealing clue, the most significant and the most directly identifiable of this loss of reference is the era of memory which has settled in the West, since the second half of the twentieth century. This excess of memory has fairly quickly led to mémorialisme, and to the politics of memory to polymémorialisme and to hypermnésie finall. History and memory, memory and history. The debate that questions the disrupted relation between these two complementary enemies is nothing new, yet the massive upsurge of memory during the second twentieth century, sets up a new redistribution of the stakes, of the expectations and the social purposes of the past, in this hyperpresent present. A critical reflection between memory and history because, as the philosopher Paul Ricoeur wrote, “a future has to be opened for the past”.

This dissertation investigates the implications of memory in fiction Francisco J. C. Dantas, in the context of a postmodern scene still under construction. Coivara da memória (1991),
Cartilha do silêncio (1997) and Sob o peso das sombras (2004) are literary texts in which the sophistication of language and the fragmented narrative narrators put into play direct and indirect memories. With that, the aim is to understand how, in these fictional texts, the memory is constructed and represented, starting from ruins or fragments, how that remembering reflects and metaphor the tradition. Although our arguments happen in a gradual
process, in which one chapter offers clues to the subsequent chapter, the work is presented in three steps. The first concerns the representation of social memory by giving voice to time and individual experiences on the sidelines of a social process and a family clan. The second corresponds to the fragmentation of narrative and the subsequent deceiving reading that the narrators present to the reader. The third is dedicated to the critical appropriation of tradition by Dantas, the consequent intertextual dialogue with it, which results in the weight of tradition itself and the potentiation of characters in a condition to the social margin. The weight of memory, the fragmentation of narrative and tradition as a loan in the postmodern scene form the foundation of this work that analyzes such elements in a past-present cycle, while use of different social voices and some procedures in the ways of recounting the memories.
