The effects of a digital memory book on the quality and quantity of conversations in adults with mild to moderate dementia

Aitken, Katrina Antoinette January 2015 (has links)
Background: Research has demonstrated that adults with a moderate dementia can benefit from the introduction of a memory book to improve the quality of their conversational content. However, previous investigations in the area have focussed on low-tech alternative and augmentative communication aids. Few studies have investigated how digital media can be incorporated into therapy when working with people living with dementia. The present study addresses this gap in the literature by investigating the effects of a digital memory book on the quality and quantity of conversations in adults with mild to moderate dementia. Method: A single-subject multiple baseline design across behaviours with replication across four participants was used in this investigation. Four English speaking adults with a mild to moderate dementia and four of their family members participated in the study. The researcher developed a digital memory book using the Pictello™ application on an Apple iPad with the help of the participant and their family/whānau. Photos and statements were chosen in relation to these three conversational topics: Daily Life, Family, and Myself. During baseline and treatment sessions, the researcher met with each participant to conduct and record a five-minute conversation based on the three conversational topics. During treatment sessions, the researcher used the digital memory book to establish the effect of the memory book on the participants’ conversational utterances. Each conversation was transcribed verbatim by the researcher and analysed and coded for Memory Book Statements, Novel On-Topic Statements, Ambiguous Utterances, Unintelligible Utterances, Perseverative Utterances, Error Statements, Other Utterances, Partner Prompts, Partner Statements, Partner Questions, and Partner Other statements. A research assistant independently transcribed 20% of the transcripts and coded 20% of the conversations to establish the inter-observer agreement for the transcription and coding. Results: Visual analysis of the total-on-topic statements revealed a lack of evidence of a clear difference between the baseline and treatment phases across all the behaviours for each of the four participants. All four participants increased their total-on-topic statements with family members during an initial baseline session without the digital memory book to a follow-up session involving the digital memory book. Conclusion: Although the use of a digital memory book did not improve the quality and quantity of conversations in adults with mild to moderate dementia during conversations with the researcher, further research in the area is warranted. Future studies could focus on individuals with moderate or more severe dementia and individuals who are familiar with using digital media in their daily lives. Research could also focus more on the use of digital memory books during conversations with family members.

Edice pamětní knihy města Netolice, tzv. žluté 1630 - 1848 / The Edition of town memory book of town Netolice, so called yellow from years 1630-1848.

VOŘÍŠKOVÁ, Markéta January 2014 (has links)
I chose as a main topic of my diploma thesis the critical edition of town memory book of town Netolice from years 1630-1848, called yellow. I chose this topic so that the manuscript would be open to public through the edition becase according to my opinion it contains interesting information about the history of the town and the progress of the company at that time. The opening part of the thesis will be made up from three chapters. The first chapter will be devoted to general development of town books and the overview of present exploration interest. The second chapter will be devoted to the inner and outer analysis of the editional source. A part of this chapter will be also devoted to the writers of the records who cannot be omitted. I will try to identify and characterize these writers. In the following and last chapter the history of town will be described and also analysed in more detail the chosen record registered in town memory book trying to interpret these records in context of the history of the town, the dominion of Prachatice and also events of land history. The mentioned modern critical edition of the town memory book of town Netolice from years 1630-1848 makes the supplement of the diploma thesis. The editional note together with nominal, place and subject index supplemented by basic dictionary of archaisms found in the editional writing will also be the part of this supplement.

No. of bitstreams: 1 GABRIELA MOREIRA RABELO.pdf: 1639157 bytes, checksum: fbcec3dd24c2ae9a8c08aad86d162a56 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-16 / This research aimed to analyze the contributions of the Book of Life as an instrument mediating the memory of children about their experiences in school. The specific objectives were (i) Identify the forms of production and use of the Book of Life in the daily life of a class of Early Childhood Education; (ii) Analyze the measure of students participation in the production of the Book of Life; (iii) Analyze what kind of content the handling of the Book of Life allows to children remember about their school experiences and (iv) To analyze if in these remembered contents there is prevalence of affective or cognitive aspects. The Book of Life is a pedagogical practice proposed by C?lestin Freinet that is a class book where the students record their impressions and discoveries about themselves and their school life, by their own initiative or by a directed way. The locus of the investigative work was a Kindergarten class. The production of empirical research was made from: (i) Observation the production of the Book of Life, focusing on the activities proposed in this paper; (ii) Interview with the teacher and (iii) Interviews with the children; The methodological procedures were videotaped. The material was analyzed from contributions of the Historical-cultural theory on mediated memory, its social constitution and its importance in the establishment of children's relations with school and with pedagogical practices. After analyzing, we conclude that the Book of Life in the hands of children, becomes an instrument that represent memory and teaching. The book becomes a document of memory and can act as a teaching tool, since it was built in a historical way (within a school year) and was contextualized through the activities that were elaborated within the social context of these children, thus enabling , The transformation of images into memories and feelings, transforming these external signs into internal processes, thus being memorized.

Identifying assets in the memory-box-making-process with vulnerable children

Viljoen, Jeandre Renette 30 March 2005 (has links)
Many children are left vulnerable due to circumstances beyond their control, for example, poverty, violence, limited education and the HIV&AIDS epidemic. One way of supporting vulnerable children is by making memory boxes. This study endeavoured to identify the assets during the memory-box-making process with vulnerable children. The aim of the study was to contribute towards an understanding of vulnerable children in South Africa and the memory-box-making process that frames vulnerable children in terms of assets, resources and capacities, instead of deficits. A combination of an interpretive and constructivist paradigm was used within an action research design. The site of the study was a deep rural community in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. Five participants and one helper contributed towards the research process. Primary data was collected within the memory-box-making process – by means of simple and participatory observation, individual and group interviews, audio-visual methods and field notes. Fifteen memory-box-making sessions took place over a period of six weeks. The data analysis consisted of a theme analysis that utilized the asset-based approach as a theoretical framework. The results from the study indicate a wealth of internal and external assets during the memory-box-making process with vulnerable children. / Dissertation (MEd (Educational Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Educational Psychology / unrestricted

The use of stories and metaphors in pastoral counseling with orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV and AIDS in Mbeya, Tanzania

Mwenisongole, Tuntufye Anangisye 11 1900 (has links)
The thesis describes the use of stories and metaphors in pastoral counseling with orphans and vulnerable children (future: OVC) affected by HIV and AIDS in Mbeya.. It is a narrative approach study which examines and explores stories and other metaphors for the children’s resilience. A narrative approach helps pastoral counselors to use stories and metaphors such as life stories, proverbs, biblical narratives, plays, art, songs, riddles, poems, symbols and images for the healing and coping mechanism with OVC. The OVC in the midst of challenges of HIV and AIDS crisis can find a healing and coping mechanism in Mbeya. A narrative approach with the use of stories and metaphors in pastoral counseling and in practical theology can be used and applied in responding to issues surrounding the OVC. It is an approach that can help the OVC find their resilience and grow into a more meaningful life, the life of wholeness. Methodologically, case studies, focus groups and interviews have been used to collect the data which was analyzed and interpreted in detail to reach the objectives of the study. I explored and discussed in detail the use of narratives, stories, and metaphors in case studies and focus groups with OVC in Mbeya. Finally, an integrative narrative model was established to build up a practical method for practical theology and counseling in dealing with the challenges which the OVC are facing. The model came as a result of the analysis and interpretation of the case studies, focus groups and interviews conducted in the field research. It describes a life cycle of a person, the events and experiences one passes through, which will ultimately help a person to grow and mature to become whole or an integrative being. / Practical Theology / D.
