Talking taboos: the personal over the political? : contemporary Polish playwriting : theme and dramatic technique in selected modern Polish playsOxley, Natasha Emma Fortescue January 2015 (has links)
The focus of this thesis is contemporary Polish playwriting after Poland's accession to the European Union in 2004. From a broad reading of plays by many new writers, four playwrights were selected for study on the basis of prominence and artistic merit: Pawel Demirski, Dorota Maslowska, Malgorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk and Przemys law Wojcieszek. Their plays were studied as texts and in performance, and twelve main plays became the focus of closer analysis. The thesis identifies and examines three major concurrent themes in the works of these playwrights. Remembering versus forgetting the past is discussed through the lens of selected aspects of memory studies, including Nora's lieux de mémoire, Hirsch's postmemory and Assman's mnemohistory. The playwrights are shown to share an endorsement of the de-politicisation of collective memory and to advocate a cessation of the passing down of trauma to post-war generations. The human body is highlighted as another concurrent thematic concern and is illuminated by certain tenets of Catholic doctrine as well as Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology. The playwrights' rejection of the tabooisation of the body is demonstrated and the shared notion of the body as both sentient and unifying is exemplified. Social marginalisation is examined as the final concern, with an emphasis on the notion of the 'other', particularly in relation to socio-economic status, sexuality, and religious beliefs. The plays are shown to support and promote a rejection of the myth of homogeneity in favour of openness to diversity. Major dramatic techniques are then closely examined. It is demonstrated that the plays share traits with Lehmann's theory of postdramatic theatre, including a rejection of Aristotelian unities. Key commonalities are evidenced, particularly comedy, bad language, intertextualities with the outside world, and an engagement with Polish social realities. The playwrights' approach to the spectator as a socio-political being is shown to be of paramount importance.

Em Órfãos do Eldorado, essa carga memorialística surpreende porque articula três planos narrativos: o mítico, o histórico e o pessoal; este último pautado pelo relato que o protagonista faz de sua difícil relação com o pai, causada pela morte da mãe no momento do parto e dos traumas que são acarretados por isso; traumas que vão surgindo aos poucos na narrativa entre recalques e silenciamentos complexificados pela incursão de aspectos míticos, relativos tanto às lendas da Amazônia e ao mito do Eldorado, quanto à ordenação factual de dados históricos concernentes à história da região amazônica. Em outras palavras, o que se verifica é a convergência desses três planos de modo a configurar um texto marcado pela inventividade, pelo rigor criativo e certo lirismo, responsáveis pelo desenho do regionalismo revisitado que Tania Pellegrini (2004) e Alfredo Bosi (2001) atribuem ao fazer narrativo de Hatoum. for articulatory aspects of dialogical/intertextual nature in contents and forms present in these books and, as specific activity, dealing with the repercussions by means of comparative readings, with regard to tendency in contemporary Brazilian literature, observed in exemplary cases such as Osman Lins and Raduan Nassar of utilization of elements, from domains of knowledge and belief, of Judeo-Christian and Islamic cultural background, explored through the
core composed by its thematic and novelistic characters: immigrants of Lebanese origin. Peripherally, this study also aims, on the one hand, the discussion of technical and methodological implications concerning the referential developments for the author s compositional repertoire and, on the other hand, the survey of objects of the referentiality and the intersemioticity in the corpus of work, in accordance with the conciliatory proposal for the theories of intertextuality by Tiphaine Samoyault: the memory of literature. As mentioned
in the following introduction, the division of contents conforms to the criteria, at first, of a revisionist movement towards encompass the classical theories of intertextuality. In a second step, it develops discussions related to the questioning raised by critics about the notions of referentiality, reference, and relation, as well as the intersection of semiotic codes conventionally insulated. Finally, the core of the project consists of a dialogical and intertextual approach of The Tree of the Seventh Heaven to other literary works. / Esta dissertação analisa os procedimentos narratológicos, estilísticos e discursivos adotados em um romance do escritor amazonense Milton Hatoum: Relato de um certo Oriente (1989). Seu objetivo de conjunto é o de propor interpretação para aspectos articulatórios de natureza dialógico-intertextual em conteúdos e formas presentes nesse livro, e, como atividade específica, tratar das repercussões por meio de leituras comparativas, tocantes à tendência na literatura brasileira contemporânea, observada em casos exemplares, como os de Osman Lins e de Raduan Nassar do aproveitamento de elementos, de domínios do conhecimento e da crença, de origens culturais judaico-cristãs e islâmicas, explorados através dos núcleos compostos por sua temática e seus personagens romanescos: imigrantes de origem libanesa. Perifericamente, este estudo visa ainda, por um lado, à discussão acerca das implicações técnicometodológicas

Anachronisme, rebuts et survivances dans Les escaliers de Chambord et le Dernier Royaume de Pascal QuignardLussier, Etienne 06 July 2016 (has links)
This thesis investigates the particular conception of time developed by Pascal Quignard in his series Dernier Royaume and his novel Les escaliers de Chambord. We argue that this conception of time, which Quignard refers to as Le Jadis, operates through an anachronistic method based on a semiotic apparatus of waste, or rejects. The argument is presented in three different chapters. The first chapter uses the work of Jacques Rancière and Georges Didi-Huberman to show the way in which the concept of anachronism embraces a temporality that blurs the lines between past, present, and future and creates openings to summon and redeem forgotten relics of the past. The second chapter analyzes this open relation to time in Dernier Royaume and Les escaliers de Chambord. In these works, Quignard's notion of Le Jadis seeks specifically to awaken a vertiginously distant conception of past that is incomplete, non-linear, and perpetually becoming. The last chapter analyzes the manner in which Le Jadis can reappear as an active force through the mediation of waste, which constitutes a specific class of signs. The work of Quignard is one of montage and remontage--fragment by fragment, scrap by scrap--of the pieces of memory, which he strives to reopen and release from the linear entrapment of chronological time to which they have been relegated.

Language, Memory, and Exile in the Writing of Milan KunderaMcCauley, Christopher Michael 13 June 2016 (has links)
During the twentieth century, the former Czechoslovakia was at the forefront of Communist takeover and control. Soviet influence regulated all aspects of life in the country. As a result, many well-known political figures, writers, and artists were forced to flee the country in order to evade imprisonment or death. One of the more notable examples is the writer Milan Kundera, who fled to France in 1975. Once in France, the notion of exile became a prominent theme in his writing as he sought to expose the political situation of his country to the western world--one of the main reasons why he chose to publish his work in French rather than in Czech. This thesis analyzes the themes of language and memory in connection with exile in two of Kundera's novels, Le livre du rire et de l'oubli (1978) and L'Ignorance (2000). We contend that these concepts serve as anchors and tethers, stabilizing forces meant to help exiled characters recreate their identity outside of their homeland. By exploring notions of language and memory in these novels, Kundera demonstrates how the experience of exile affects the human condition during the latter half of the twentieth century.

Previous issue date: 2018-09-21 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The present dissertation aims to detect by the modernist view of António de Alcântara Machado, the physical transformations occurred in São Paulo city in the first XX century decades, as well to understand how it was recognized by him as (re) configurations of social interactions in presence of the urban cartography expansion, technological insertion and new urban actors. Is important to say that the Alcântara Machado was one of the most important name of São Paulo's modernism and composed almost all of his work in the São Paulo city, overcoming the original place, the wealthiest neighborhoods and the working classes. Through their work is possible to appreciate of some concrete and invisible barriers that separated them, and, paradoxically, the innumerable possibilities of meeting in their public/segregatory spaces. In this view point, need ask about the multiple experiences with the modern, in addition to the official discourses building in symbols of progress and universal well-being. In dialogue with the writer, another names of the period were summoned, making it possible, by approaching and/or arguments distancing, to understand their read place and city statement. This research also objective to contribute to the debate between History and Literature; between History and City / A presente dissertação busca captar, pelo olhar modernista de António de Alcântara Machado, as transformações físicas ocorridas na cidade de São Paulo nas primeiras décadas do século XX, bem como entender de que modo foi percebida, por ele, as (re)configurações das interações sociais diante da ampliação cartográfica urbana, inserção tecnológica e novos atores citadinos. Vale dizer que Alcântara Machado figura entre os principais nomes do modernismo paulista e compôs praticamente toda sua obra na cidade de São Paulo, percorrendo, para além do Triângulo original, os bairros mais abastados e as regiões operárias. Através de sua obra é possível o vislumbre de algumas das fronteiras concretas e invisíveis que os separavam, bem como, paradoxalmente, as inúmeras possibilidades de encontro em seus espaços públicos/segregatórios. Por essa ótica, inquere-se sobre as múltiplas vivências com o moderno, para além dos discursos oficiais ancorados em símbolos de progresso e bem-estar universais. Em diálogo com o escritor, outros nomes do período foram convocados, possibilitando, pelo aproximação e/ou distanciamento das colocações, entender o seu local de leitura e enunciado de cidade.
