<p> College student mental health is a significant issue for educational leaders, as mental health needs are increasing in prevalence and severity (ACHA, 2013; Gallagher, 2013). Eisenberg, Downs, Golberstein, and Zivin (2009) note that mental health issues cause adverse occupational, academic and social outcomes, impacting student success, retention, and persistence (Belch, 2011; Cleary, Walter, &amp; Jackson, 2011). Anxiety and depression, which are more prevalent in women (ADAA, 2007; APA, 2013), are the most common mental health issues affecting college students (ACHA, 2013; Gallagher, 2013). </p><p> Coyne and Downey (1991) correlated social support with improved mental health outcomes. Baron (2010) indicated that involvement in student organizations may promote development and connection, thereby enhancing learning and retention (Chambliss &amp; Takacs, 2014). Female students may engage in campus life by joining sororities, which are prominent and influential on many campuses (Lien, 2002). The purpose of this research was to investigate sorority member mental health, specifically anxiety and depression. The relationships between anxiety, depression, and student characteristics were examined. </p><p> This correlational, ex-post facto study explored the presence and severity of anxiety and depression of women (N =72) who self-identified as living in sorority housing. Permission was obtained to review data from the 2013-2014 Healthy Minds Study (Eisenberg &amp; Lipson, 2014), including demographic information and results from the PHQ-9 (Kroenke, Spitzer, &amp; Williams, 2001) and the GAD-7 (Spitzer, Kroenke, Williams, &amp; L&ouml;we 2006). Data analyses produced frequencies, correlations, and t-tests. </p><p> Findings revealed the following: 20% of respondents reported anxiety, with 8% percent reporting severe anxiety; 15% of respondents reported depression, with 5% reporting major depression. Financial difficulty was correlated with depression (<i>r</i> =.27, <i>r²</i>=.07, <i> p</i>=.008) and a significant relationship existed between the presence of anxiety and depression (<i>r²</i>=.36, <i> r</i>2=.13, <i>p</i>=.004). No statistically significant difference existed in reported symptoms of anxiety and depression of women residing in sorority housing compared to those residing elsewhere. Information about mental health may assist sororities in providing support and resources to members. Educational leaders, mental health practitioners, faculty, and student affairs staff can also benefit from this information as they work to help address student mental health needs, student retention, persistence, and success. </p>

Esta pesquisa, em uma estratégia cartográfica de imersão no cotidiano do Serviço Residencial Terapêutico Morada São Pedro – serviço da rede substitutiva ao manicômio no cuidado em saúde mental – cria um aporte teórico, um eixo reflexivo, partindo do convite à criação de práticas de cuidado em saúde mental. A convocação ao pensamento se dá por composição, numa evolução que busca escapar de circularidades, passando por elaborações acerca do acolhimento à diferença-em-nós como um primeiro movimento de acoplamento de alteridade. Orientado pela perspectiva da composição de novos e inovadores espaços de produção de cuidado e acolhimento ao sofrimento psíquico, busca-se explorar o conceito de “território em ato” como potencial das artes, potencial do convite à participação e expressão dos coletivos (trabalhadores, alunos residentes) convocados à criação de práticas. Ao colocar-se ao lado e no lugar do cuidado, em pelo menos duas orientações iniciais para as práticas – invenção de um espaço teatral para trocas com a equipe de cuidado do serviço em questão e acompanhamento a moradores – o ator-pesquisador imergiu em uma proposta de pesquisa-intervenção na qual as práticas do cuidado em saúde mental se mostraram limitadas ao esbarrar em lógicas institucionais. O eixo de formação em serviço, com orientação multiprofissional, e o vislumbre de uma “pedagogia da implicação”, que convoca os coletivos de produção de saúde a trocas e acolhimento das demandas, em uma disponibilidade de escuta e exposição continuada, orientam as expectativas de acolhimento às expressões, busca de liberdade e capacidade inventiva. / This research, in a cartographic strategy of immersion in the daily life of the Residential Therapeutic Service Morada São Pedro – service of the substitute network to the asylum in mental health care – creates a theoretical contribution, a reflexive axis, starting from the invitation to the creation of care practices in mental health. The call to thought is given by composition, in an evolution that seeks to escape from circularities, passing through elaborations about the reception to the difference-in-us as a first movement of coupling of otherness. Oriented by the perspective of the composition of new and innovative spaces for the production of care and acceptance of psychic suffering, we sought to explore the concept of "in act territory" as the potential of the arts, the potential of the invitation to participation and expression of the collectives (workers, Residency students) called for the creation of practices. By placing beside and in the place of care, in at least two initial guidelines for the practices - the invention of a theatrical space for exchanges with the care team of the service in question and follow-up of the residents - the actor-researcher immersed himself in a research-intervention proposal in which mental health care practices has been shown limited when bumping into institutional logics. The axis of in-service training, with a multiprofessional orientation, and the glimpse of a "pedagogy of implication", which calls on health production collectives to exchange and reception to demands, in readiness to listen and ongoing exposure, guide the expectations of acceptance of expressions, search for freedom and inventiveness.

O presente estudo teve a intenção de contribuir para a “produção de vida” – intensidades, potência, movimento, experimentação e metamorfose –, em relação a usuários dos serviços de saúde mental, trabalhadores da saúde e atores sociais produtores de fatos da cultura. O trabalho se fez pensando em uma Educação da Saúde, contribuição para as práticas de atenção e formação, a partir da escuta de narrativa de um jovem artesão presente no campo das artes e também usuário de um serviço de saúde mental da cidade de Porto Alegre/RS. Nosso objetivo foi de apresentar aproximações e contatos entre os campos da educação em saúde e da arte e cultura, por meio da trajetória intensa e sensível de um jovem adulto, suas experiências, sensações e reflexões envolvendo estes campos. Renato narra seu percurso na cultura e na saúde, nos fazendo pensar não apenas a formação de profissionais ou a cultura como setor que abriga as artes e as manifestações expressivas, mas a educação como a produção das práticas sociais onde se inserem o acolhimento da vida sob a forma de atenção à saúde. Em nossas “conversas”, sinaliza a importância de o campo da saúde estar aberto a compor-se com outros campos, como o da cultura, especialmente quando presente na vida local, na vida no bairro, na vida de relações. As questões tematizadas foram: como as expressões da cultura contribuem para a produção de saúde e como a cultura pode contribuir no cuidado de usuários de serviços de saúde? A abordagem proposta foi uma “escuta de narrativa” (interação sensível, margem aberta às interações desejadas pelo interlocutor e mesmo a expectativa de sua interferência, atenção às entrelinhas da comunicação e esforço pela escuta com o corpo todo), utilizando a conversação e a construção de “analisadores temáticos”, isto é, eleição de tópicos para a tematização ou tópicos para pensar foram-se abrindo os disparadores conceituais de apoio à compreensão das conexões arte, vida e saúde mental coletiva. Com este estudo percebemos o quanto se faz necessário trabalhadores de saúde abertos às experimentações, ao que é singular e potente em cada usuário; e como a cultura, através de suas expressões, oferta para trabalhadores e usuários uma pedagogia social e espaço para uma educação da cidade. / This study intended to contribute to the "production of life" – intensities, power, motion, experimentations and metamorphosis – regarding to users of mental health services, health workers and social actors producers of cultural facts. M. Curr. / Mental health challenges are a worldwide phenomenon, and more people are experiencing these challenges which are related to the life style and psychological stressors facing them. Addressing this burden is a challenge to health care providers, as some are influenced by their perceptions about mental illness in facing the demands made be society. Registered nurses who are not trained in psychiatric nursing do not have the appropriate background information or skill of how to cope with patients with mental health challenges even if they have undergone an introduction into nursing psychology at college. This increases their fears and anxieties when having to interact with these patients. The aim of this study is thus to explore the experiences of registered nurses in interaction with patients with mental health challenges so as to be able to formulate and describe guidelines to facilitate the registered nurses mental health.

Background Mental illness is one of the most stigmatized conditions in our society. Since 1990, Yankelovich [1] revealed that the mass media, including television and broadcast news, are the primary source of information about mental illness. The media are believed to play a major role in contributing to mental illness stigma via the images they portray of characters with mental illness as well as the misinformation communicated, inaccurate use of psychiatric terms, and unfavorable stereotypes of people with mental illness according to Wahl’s study [2]. However, little is known about the influence of Hong Kong media especially the TV broadcast. Therefore, this study is going to investigate Cantonese TV dramas which related on psychosis, which strongly influence the public recognition of the illness. Objective The objective of this study is to1)analyze the selected terms ‘ 痴線’ , ‘精神病’ ‘思覺失調’ and ‘精神分裂’ which were related to mental illness that present in the target dramas; 2) to investigate negative images of mental illness in the Cantonese TV dramas; 3)to investigate the relationship between the characters and the terms. Method This study investigated the domestic free television program service licensees TVB about the drama series they provide within 2001 to 2012 which broadcasted during 8pm to 10:30pm. The dramas in year 2001, 2002, 2006, 2007, 2011 and 2012 would be chosen. The terms‘ 痴線’ , ‘精神病’ ‘思覺失調’ and ‘精神分裂were selected to be analyzed. All episodes were classified by category and analyzed quantitatively. Results the term of痴線still remained the highest than other terms within the same period of these six selected year. In year 2007, the term of ‘思覺失調’ started being used 0.7% but still in a low frequency comparatively to 痴線13.3% and 精神病1.9Similar results were found in the year of 2011 and 2012. There was a decreased in using 痴線, from approximately 30 % to 10% from 2001 to 2012. There was also an obvious decrease in using the term of ‘精神病’ from 10% to 1% from 2001 to 2012. In general, many of the references to mental illness were about a character's actions in a situation rather than a character's nature or mental state. Characters who received these terms were depicted negatively in the majority of occurrences. Conclusion The stigma of psychiatric illness is a negative factor in its presentation, detection and treatment. The mass media’s power to impact public perception and the degree to which people are exposed to media representations makes the mass media one of the most significant influences in developed societies. Many studies including this study showed that the media tends to skew reality.
