A psychiatric service at a community hospital

Ashley-Smith, Andrew January 1991 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to evaluate an attempt to use the facilities of a general hospital with minimal psychiatric cover to deal with acute psychiatric conditions. This is in keeping with current psychiatric opinion in South Africa as expressed by Dr. C.W. Allwood and Dr G.A.D. Hart. This dissertation will examine the needs structure, difficulties and results of the provision of a service dealing with acute psychiatric disorders in a peripheral General Hospital and make suqqestions should similar satellite facilities be established at other peripheral hospitals. Although in principle. the concept of part-time specialist cover at a peripheral general hospital is not new in medical. surgical and gynaecological departments. the previous involvement of private psychiatrists within the teaching department has been in the form of out-patient department sessions only at academic and state psychiatric hospitals as is practiced in Cape Town. This project however allowed for the evaluation of emergency cases with subsequent referral to appropriate treatment centres if needed from a peripheral hospital. A consultation-liaison service within the general wards and the opportunity to conduct seminars, lectures and in-house training for all level of professional staff were also encompassed.

Evaluation of the Wits crisis centre lay counselling training course via trainee perceptions

Arumugam, V January 2016 (has links)
Abstract Keywords: Lay counsellors, training and evaluation. The training of lay counselling is of great significance to the field of Counselling Psychology. Therefore, the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) decided to allow for the registration of lay counsellor training courses. However, the criteria for registration need to be formulated. This study evaluated the Wits Crisis course for volunteer counsellors, via illumination of the perceptions of the trainees and a measurement of their self-efficacy and personal relations before and after the training. The study included qualitative and quantitative methodology. Past trained counsellors and trainees were interviewed and then assessed on Self-Efficacy and Personal Relations before and after training. A Wilcoxon Matched-Pairs Signed-Rank significance in self-efficacy or personal relations scores after training. However, the interviews of the participants' perceptions of the course and its impact on them supported the hypotheses. Overall, perceptions were positive. Negative perceptions were highlighted, as this information could add to the knowledge base of the program. / GR 2016

A therapeutic programme for parents of youth offenders

Nieman, Annelien 11 1900 (has links)
This study highlighted the distinction between retributive and restorative justice. Diversion and the Journey as a diversion option for youth in South Africa was discussed. Literature indicated that certain family aspects such as family cohesiveness, communication, discipline, and conflict in the home could lead to youth offending. Interviews, focus groups, and questionnaires were used to determine possible problematic family interactions as well as parents' needs of a parent programme. It was found that parents experience feelings like anger, disappointment, shock, helplessness, frustration, and humiliation regarding the child's crime. It was established that dealing with parents' feelings, communication, discipline, conflict resolution, and problem solving should be included in the parent programme. An evaluation of the programme was done and the following aspects showed improvement: communication, mother's involvement with the child, understanding and support in the family, youth's independence, affection, family relations, problem solving and the amount of time spent with family. / Psychology of Education / M. The employment patterns of BPsych graduates in the Western Cape

Kotze, Lynn Meagan 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / In order to make mental health care more accessible and even out the skewed distribution of services, policies were put in place to integrate mental health services into primary health care. For this to be effective, more trained mental health personnel needed to be employed in the public sphere as well as non-governmental and community organizations; and in state services. The BPsych degree which was instituted to meet this need has however, been plagued with controversy since its inception. This study aims to determine the employment patterns of BPsych graduates in the Western Cape so as to ascertain whether the expressed goals for establishing the degree, that is, addressing the need for primary mental health care workers, is in fact being met. Combinations of quantitative and qualitative methods were employed in this study. A self-constructed questionnaire was used for obtaining data. Quantitative data was analysed using SPSS and qualitative data was analysed by means of thematic content analysis. The quantitative data suggest that most of the respondents are employed and have completed the board exam. The majority of respondents are female and are employed within either community or NGO settings, or the private sector. Just over one third of respondents are employed as counsellors. A qualitative analysis of the data has suggested that the majority of employers are unaware of the category of registered counsellor. Respondents placed a large emphasis on the value of the practical component of the course. Based on the results obtained, one could argue that access to mental health care has not been significantly improved by the implementation of this category of registration.
