Secure the Shadow is a collection of short-shorts and flash fiction, which draws heavily on the conventions of fables, parables and fairy tales to consider modern themes, desires and cruelties. The collection is linked by a meta-fictional fascination with the act of storytelling -- the liminal psychological space between the real and unreal, fantasy and delusion, seen and unseen, predator and prey. The collection also maps the topography of loss -- it explores what it means, and how it feels, to lose and to be lost. / MFA

O propósito deste trabalho é analisar os dois romances, Uma aprendizagem ou o livro dos prazeres, de Clarice Lispector, e El silencio de las sirenas, de Adelaida García Morales, respeitados seus respectivos referenciais literários, como releituras subversivas da tradição literária narrativa, operação esta que denominamos \"penelopéias metaromancescas\". Com este propósito, percorremos a tradição mítico-poética, a partir do modus operandi de cada romance, tendo em vista que cada um procura re-ler e subverter os mitos de Ulisses, Penélope e das Sereias ao resgatar a voz discursiva feminina usurpada a partir da epopéia homérica, e revisamos alguns estudos que têm o romance como um gênero que nasce da epopéia. / The purpose of this paper is to analyze the romances An apprenticeship or The book of pleasures by Clarice Lispector and The silence of the sirens, by Adelaida García, respecting their literary referential as subversives rereadings of the narrative literary tradition, an operation that we call \"penelopees meta-ramancescs\". With this aim we go through the poetic mythic tradition, from the modus operandi of each novel, having in mind that each one searches rereading and subverting the myths of Ulysses, Penelope and the Sirens when rescuing the female discursive voice seized from the Homeric epopee, and review some studies that have the romance as a genre that comes from the epopee.

Previous issue date: 2008-09-11 / This study has like focus transform process of identity the Brazilian novel: Viva o
povo brasileiro, by João Ubaldo Ribeiro (1984). The first, we exam relationship that
this work kept with the postmodernism in that the Brazilian identity assumes subvertsive
and revolutionary character. This novel breaks the barrriers between history and
fiction introduction meta-fictional discourse that characters are action and imaginary.
So we have the Brazil is poetic space - house/Country built only for literate arts
discourse though language that transform the facts in narrated universe. After
analyze the official history in two perspectives: domineering and dominated that
relationship between themselves and it forms the identity Brazilian people that are
heroes. However, they occupate centre of narrative with national and human
conscience. This artist fictional universe, the collectivity ideia include difference and
recognition of Brazil like mestizo. So we conclude our study showing like man if
relatioship with his identity from a symbolic construction and he down a dialogue
with art in itself. This dialogue lead the man of mystery and uncertainty future. / O estudo aqui desenvolvido tem como foco a transfiguração identitária do povo
brasileiro no romance Viva o povo brasileiro, de João Ubaldo Ribeiro (1984).
Enfatizamos, primeiramente, a relação que essa obra mantém com o pósmodernismo,
revelando que a identidade do brasileiro assume um caráter
subversivo, revolucionário. Contudo, ao romper barreiras entre a historiografia e a
ficção, a obra apresenta um discurso metaficcional em que personagens são ação e
imaginário ao mesmo tempo. O Brasil como espaço poético, casa/pátria, está
voltado para os discursos produzidos pela arte literária que, por meio da linguagem,
transfigura os fatos para o universo narrado. Após o desenvolvimento dessa análise,
voltamos a atenção para a história oficial, que é repensada e transfigurada sob dois
pólos: dominadores e dominados, formando duas linhagens que se entrecruzam e
constrói a identidade do povo brasileiro. Povo este, reconhecido como herói, por isso
ocupa o centro da narrativa e produz discursos de consciência nacional e humana.
Nesse universo ficcional-artístico, é central a idéia de coletividade que inclui a
diferença e o reconhecimento do Brasil como país mestiço, em que o outro não
importando qual seja a sua origem étnico-cultural, é visto como parte desse
universo. Sendo assim, fechamos o nosso estudo, mostrando de que forma o
homem se relaciona com a sua trajetória identitária a partir de uma construção
simbólica, estabelecendo um diálogo com a arte em si mesma, no qual se abre para
o futuro com seus mistérios e incertezas.

The dissertation for my PhD is a composite novel called We Are Everyone You Know. The novel is set in a small town that is neither rural nor suburban, which, like the characters, defies classification. The cast rotates. Main characters become supporting characters in subsequent chapters and vice versa. I employ this strategy so the reader is able to see each character as an individual, that even those who seem to be in the background are living complex lives. The novel explores such themes as poverty, gentrification, the loss of innocence caused by a corrupt world, and the inability of people to realize their identities when the promises of youth turn out to be lies. Each chapter or story is told from either a different point of view or in a different style or genre. While the novel as a whole is grounded around a family and group of friends in a small town, the pieces of the story range in form from simple realism, to modernism, to post-modernism, to surrealism, to meta-fiction. I experiment with genres ranging from crime drama, to disaster survival, to sports comedy, to kung-fu epic, and more. Interspersed between the genre pieces are realist stories of a new lost generation—thirty-somethings who are stuck in permanent adolescence, who work at soul-crushing jobs, and who find neither the shining future that was promised to them in their youth nor the comfortable mediocrity of their parents’ lives. For this project I have been particularly inspired by the works of Louise Erdrich, James Joyce, and Jennifer Egan.
