Walking far together: Theological education and development in African pastoral formation.Wilhelm, Hans-Martin 30 May 2003 (has links)
1 online resource (388 leaves) / This study examines the intersubjectivity of issues related to pastoral
formation. It argues that a local theology of pastoral formation in the
African context is most transformative when theological education
and development are woven together in a synergistic approach. Such
a model of local theology can result from a well thought out synergy
between educational theories, developmental theories and theology. It
is further argued that equipped pastoral leaders and healthy churches
are at the heart of the process for holistic transformation. As such,
this study proposes a philosophy and praxis that relevantly addresses
the intersubjective context of leadership formation in the African
context. It intends to challenge the church in Africa to redefine its
task and itself in the face of the social problems posed on all levels of
African life. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / D. Th. (Missiology)

In this dogmatic study we develop from a Reformed covenantal perspective a missiological
theory which is applicable in missionary praxis.
In chapter I we account for our choice of the covenant concept as the cornerstone of our theory.
Added to this we explain our hermeneutical approach towards the biblical text in relationship to
the context of our research with special attention to the Bible as the canonical Word of God and
the own nature of theology as a science.
In chapter 2 we start our theological-historical orientation in the covenant concept with an outline
of our theological biography highlighting the covenant theology of the Dutch theologian K
Schilder and outlining the rise and development of Orthodox-Reformed covenantal theology from
the times of the Reformation.
In the chapters 3 and 4 we discuss the different covenants in the Old and New Testament in their
interrelationship with strong emphasis on their common structural elements, i.e. the unilateral
creation, the bilateral continuation and the forensic foundation of covenant. We pay special attention
to the relationship between the Old and New Testament with regard to the New Covenant.
In chapter 5 we discuss the dogmatic implications of our biblical-theological research in the
covenant concept with regard to the Orthodox-Reformed covenant tradition suggesting that this
tradition is in need of some adaptation in order to stay in line with Scriptural teachings on
covenant. We analyse the implications of interrelating covenant, creation and revelation. In this
analysis we pay attention to a covenantal approach towards creation and revelation. This
interrelationship is considered structurally from the three basic elements of covenant as well as
spiritually from the functions of the cult, the law and baptism in covenant.
In chapter 6 we draw missiological relevant conclusions from our biblico-dogmatic study
discussing from a covenant perspective several themes topical for a missiological theory which
has to be applied in missionary praxis. We round off our study with discussing mission and
creation with emphasis on inculturation, ecology and the theology of religions.
Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / D. Th. (Systematic Theology)

Mission as relationship : an analysis of trends in both the pastoral and scientific context in relation to the Missio DeiLock, Gavin David 01 1900 (has links)
The dissertation underlines an approach towards mission, where the epistemology,
hermeneutical key and methodology centre around relationship. This, by tracing trends in the
pastoral context, verified through research and an analysis of congregational surveys. The results
were then analysed in terms of biblical revelation (the creation narratives, God's covenental
relationship with Israel, Christ as the New Israel, Christ's missiological methodology and an
understanding of the Holy Trinity). The resulis were then also brought into conversation with
recent developments in science, recognising the interdependence of all things, and also exploring
recent definitions of mission. The study then grapples with a new way of engaging in theology.
This new model simultaneously promotes the symbiotic nature of theologies, while placing them
within the framework of relational objectives; using dialogue as medium, Holland and Henriot's
Social Analysis and quantifiable relationship goals to engender a theological process accessible
to people from all contexts and backgrounds. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. Th. (Missiology)

Missionale transformasie in die Nederduitse Gereformeerde gemeente Eloffsdal : ‘n terdoodveroordeelde gemeente herleefBotha, Jan Adriaan 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research has been conducted from a post modern, practical theological point of view. The focus of the research is on the question: How was it possible for Eloffsdal Dutch Reformed Church as a congregation with a death penalty on it to experience new life and hope?
I share a couple of introductory ideas and concepts in Chapter 1. The focus is on the research question mentioned above, the historical background and the unique context of the congregation. Concepts are clarified to explain the meaning of certain concepts in the study. Concepts include missional, missional transformation, stories/narratives, identity, capacity, new borders, a new church concept and God stories of Hope are clarified.
Chapter 2 deals with the importance of considering the congregation's story and the context in which it played and still plays out. The micro, meso and macro contexts are also taken into account. In Chapter 3 Eloffsdal's members tell the story of the congregation through the use of the nominal group technique as well as the use of the ethnographic reading report. The congregation is then described according to ethnographic interviews, missional conversations and relevant nominal questionnaires. Chapter 4 focuses on the theology, practical theology and the narrative practical theology. The identity of the congregation, the re-discovery of the initiative of the Trinity, the discovery to be send out or be missional as well as the development of new capacities are described.
In Chapter 5 there is a search for a possible paradigm shift where the congregation itself needs to discover and develop various levels and different contexts in their missional journey. This will involve that new borders will be crossed. The processes and factors which turned the members' minds to contribute to their new concepts of the church (ecclesiology) are also discussed. Together with my co-researchers we searched for possible stories of Hope.
Chapter 6 is a critical reflection on the research process and the possible missional transformation that contributed to a congregation's experience of new life and hope in spite of a death penalty being spoken out over it. Possible limitations of the research as well as topics for further research are mentioned. The end of any process is and always will be open and always leads to further questions and problems to be discovered. This research does not end with a full stop, but with a comma,….

A missiological evaluation of measuring instruments for analysing missionary identity in a post-colonial youth ministryNel, Reginald Wilfred 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MTh (Practical Theology and Missiology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / In this thesis I evaluate missiologically the research tools which aim to gather relevant data about missionary identity in a post-colonial youth ministry. I follow the model of doing theology called the pastoral cycle of Holland and Henriot (1983) modified for the Southern African situation. This model integrates praxis, hermeneutics and theological reflection as an ongoing process in the life of faith communities (Cochrane, De Gruchy & Petersen 1991:13). In Chapter 1, as an introduction I describe my faith commitments, participation in the mission praxis and the background of the study. In line with the qualitative nature of this study, I do not state any hypotheses, but work with a research question: How can current measuring instruments be evaluated so that they are appropriate or can be modified to gather relevant data on how a youth ministry within a post-colonial faith community regards itself in terms of its particular mission of God?

Thesis (MDiv (Practical Theology and Missiology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / Mission is probably one of the most visual acts which the church took upon herself and can even be seen as the factor which brought the church to being. Mission was through the ages very positive for the church but also very negative. Especially in the early twentieth century the church has undergone heavy confrontations.
Throughout the twentieth century a massive paradigm shift took place. Mission took on a strong pastoral character, which again let to a change in character for pastoral care.
Africa is seen as one of the most diverse continents regarding faiths, traditions and cultures. This diversity put a strong challenge on Mission and Pastoral care.

Thesis (MDiv (Practical Theology and Missiology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / The second half of the 20th century marks a paradigm shift from Christendom to missional theology with implications for missional ecclesiology. The being of a triune, missional God urges the church towards a critical-hermeneutical self reflection on it’s identity and calling in terms of evangelization and active involvement in an all-inclusive witnessing in the world. Missional ecclesiology emphasizes diaconial involvement in the world. The reflection of the Dutch Reformed Church on diaconia can be learnt in its conceptualization of missional diaconial work and how it is being implemented in the practice of the church. This ecclesiological development is being studied using the ministry of compassion of the Dutch Reformed Congregation, Onrusriver as case study.

Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The missio Dei is understood as the initiative, movement and sending love of the triune God to the world for the purpose of establishing his kingdom. When the phrase “missional” is used within the context of the church, it describes a congregation that finds her identity within this theological framework, and understands that her calling lies in collaborating with the missio Dei. The human response to the missio Dei can be described by the concept “spirituality”.
Trends within the macro-context of our time show spirituality is subject to subjective interpretation. It is therefore necessary to define and frame Christian spirituality within the context of faith, and more specifically, within the context of missional theology. For this reason this study poses the following research question: What is the essence and nature of missional spirituality? What would a spirituality that uses the missio Dei as its theological epistemological core look like?
The study found that the essence of missional spirituality lies therein that the initiative of man’s search for and connection to God, belongs to God himself. The Trinity provides the landscape in which missional spirituality can be described and understood. Missional spirituality insists, though, that a believer’s knowledge of God (theology) is meant to be fully embraced in life as response to God (spirituality). It thus invites a believer towards participation in the missio Dei, within the following three spheres:
- A process of spiritual formation: God takes the initiative in the salvation of man and restores Him, through the atonement of Christ, to a relationship with Him. God further invites and enables the believer in becoming a participant in a process of spiritual formation, which is meant to impact his life holistically. A way of life, characterised by faith and love, becomes the measure of an adequate response to the missio Dei.
- A community of faith: God also takes the initiative in the formation of a faith community. Communion with Christ assumes communion with the body of Christ. Missional spirituality invites believers towards mutual relationships within the community of faith that strives towards reflecting the unity and love of the Trinity.
- Social transformation: It is distinctive of missional spirituality that God takes the initiative in the transformation of society. There is an underlying connection between the agenda of God’s kingdom and the transformation of reality. A call to Christ involves believers in a call towards social transformation, incarnate to the conditions of time and place.
The study shows that a reciprocal interiority exists between these spheres of participation, which is characteristic to missional spirituality. The embrace thereof opens the door to the believer towards finding meaning in life. A believer can further his participation in the missio Dei by engaging in spiritual practices, which grows his capacity for a greater awareness of God’s movement and the discernment of his will.

MISSIONALE GEMEINDE ENTWICKLUNG. Eine dokumentarische Wirkungsevaluation zu Chancen und Grenzen der Trafo-Gemeindeberatung im Kontext missionaler Transformation / Missional church development : a documentary impact analysis on opportunities and challenges within missional transformation by the example of Trafo-Church-Counsel-InstituteDickel, Rosemary Luise Christiane 02 1900 (has links)
Summaries in German and English.
Subject-matter of the following MTh dissertation is a documentary evaluation of missional
church-counsel in the setting of Trafo-Church-Counsel Institute. Aim of this research
is to evaluate the impact of transformation within the Trafo-Church-Counsel Program
which is conducted of a combination of church-counsel and a transformation cycle
of community organizing adapted for churches. Based on documentary social science and
the empirical-theological praxis cycle this study will be performed in an intradisciplinary
manner.
Documentary research doesn’t generate its results based on common sense but on collective
tacid knowledge of the participants. Further access will be gained through reconstructing
collective implicit logic of action.
This specific methodical approach provides insights on missional transformation in general
and in the specific case of Trafo-Church-Counsel Institute. The results of this study
will provide on one hand answers for the quest of evaluations which include learn functions
