Silveira, Márcio Albuquerque 18 March 1999 (has links)
This work presents a comparative study between cold sand-asphalt mixtures produced with standart asphaltic emulsion and polymer modified emulsion. The aim of this research is to evaluate, with use of dynamic and static creep tests and the Cantabro wear out test, if the use of a polymer modified emulsion would result in a cold sand-asphalt mixture more resistent to wear out and permanent deformation. The asphaltic mixes analyzed in this research presented high wear out resistence, but due to dificulties occurred in creep tests there were not found evidences that the use of polymer modified emulsion would produce a more resistent cold sand-asphalt mixture

Long term stability of concrete made from red sand in a marine environment

Ghiafeh Davoodi, Majid January 2008 (has links)
The desire of the minerals industry to be more sustainable has led towards the increasing development of by-products. One such industry is the production of Alumina. The Alumina industry in Australia is the major producer of alumina in the western world with over 25 million tonnes of Bauxite Residue per annum. Alcoa World Alumina (Alcoa) has three refineries in Western Australia producing approximately 20,000 tonnes of Mud and a similar level of Red Sand each day. These as yet unutilised potential resources are being stockpiled, occupying a significant footprint. It is widely recognised within industry that there would be economic, environment and social benefits if a sustainable use for these materials were found. One such potential by-product is the production of coarse bauxite residue (Red Sand), neutralised and washed low in salt. The main purpose of this research was to establish a potential market for this material, through scientific evaluation of Red Sand as a replacement of natural fine aggregate (Natural Yellow Sand) in concrete mixes. For this research, the mixed stream of Bauxite Residue (fine and coarse) obtained in the Bayer process was neutralized by a process of carbonation then washed using cyclones and counter current wash towers to a value added byproduct. The coarse particles (Washed and Carbonated Sand-WCS) of the stream were separated by Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation technique (WHIMS) so that different segments such as High Iron Sand (HIS) and Low Iron Sand (LIS) were formed. Physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of these materials have been tested and compared with that of natural sand. Several mixes of concrete were then designed using Red Sand as a fine aggregate in order to verify their effects on strength and durability indicators of concrete. / The comparative analysis between normal mix proportions and the mix proportions utilizing Red Sand was also achieved. In addition, the impact of marine environment on concrete mix design and properties of manufactured concrete were evaluated with a series of standard laboratory tests. The findings were promising in terms of both mechanical properties and durability and suggested that Red Sand, in particular Low Iron Sand is likely to be effective in place of fine aggregates and can be used within marine grade concrete with no major differences when compared to normal concrete. From the results obtained, it can be deduced that this material can be used in a wide range of concrete applications in Civil Engineering and Construction.

Thermo-Viscoelastic-Viscoplastic-Viscodamage-Healing Modeling of Bituminous Materials: Theory and Computation

Darabi Konartakhteh, Masoud 2011 August 1900 (has links)
Time- and rate-dependent materials such as polymers, bituminous materials, and soft materials clearly display all four fundamental responses (i.e. viscoelasticity, viscoplasticity, viscodamage, and healing) where contribution of each response strongly depends on the temperature and loading conditions. This study proposes a new general thermodynamic-based framework to specifically derive thermo-viscoelastic, thermo-viscoplastic, thermo-viscodamage, and micro-damage healing constitutive models for bituminous materials and asphalt mixes. The developed thermodynamic-based framework is general and can be applied for constitutive modeling of different materials such as bituminous materials, soft materials, polymers, and biomaterials. This framework is build on the basis of assuming a form for the Helmohelotz free energy function (i.e. knowing how the material stores energy) and a form for the rate of entropy production (i.e. knowing how the material dissipates energy). However, the focus in this work is placed on constitutive modeling of bituminous materials and asphalt mixes. A viscoplastic softening model is proposed to model the distinct viscoplastic softening response of asphalt mixes subjected to cyclic loading conditions. A systematic procedure for identification of the constitutive model parameters based on optimized experimental effort is proposed. It is shown that this procedure is simple and straightforward and yields unique values for the model material parameters. Subsequently, the proposed model is validated against an extensive experimental data including creep, creep-recovery, repeated creep-recovery, dynamic modulus, constant strain rate, cyclic stress controlled, and cyclic strain controlled tests in both tension and compression and over a wide range of temperatures, stress levels, strain rates, loading/unloading periods, loading frequencies, and confinement levels. It is shown that the model is capable of predicting time-, rate-, and temperature-dependent of asphalt mixes subjected to different loading conditions.

Pavement researches have been looking for alternatives to reduce fuel consumption and gas emission that cause the greenhouse effect generated by the conventional asphaltic mixes. The reduction of the machining and compaction temperature of asphalt mixes is considered an alternative in production of asphaltic coatings able to provide technical, economic and environmental benefits. Named warm mixes, several technologies are used in their production. They are capable of decreasing the machining and compaction temperatures of the asphaltic mixes without altering its characteristics. In this perspective this research performed a comparative study of 4 additives: CCBit, carnauba wax, sunflower oil and ben tree oil using levels of 1,0%; 1,5%; 2,0%; and 2,5%, intending the study of its rheological properties and analysis of the potentiality in production of warm mixes. It was observed that every additive that was used obtained temperature decrease in compaction and machining especially ben tree oil that obtained a decrease of 18,3ºC. When the purpose is the quality improvement of the asphaltic mix the CCBit stands out because it obtained an increase of its complex module (G*) therefore also increasing the matter resistance. When the results are analyzed in a general way it’s possible to affirm that the CCBit and the carnauba wax stimulate increase of the binder resistance while the oils indicate loss of resistance with increase of its workability, consequently all of them are viable options of warm mixes depending on its appliance site.

Estudo de parâmetros constitutivos extraídos de dados experimentais no comportamento de misturas asfálticas

Theisen, Klaus Machado January 2011 (has links)
A study on the influence of the choice of constitutive parameters on the behavior of asphalt mixtures, studying the behavior of the material both in the linear and non-linear level of strains. The experimental data from the dissertation of Brito (2006) has been used, which performed indirect tensile tests measuring both horizontal and vertical displacements. The material tested by Brito has taken into account a reasonable range of air voids, which was crucial for the analysis of this thesis. The behavior of the mixes has been compared extracting from them the shear compliances J(t), compressibility B (t) and creep compliance D (t) with Poisson's ratio assumed as constant. The analysis results in the linear level of strains has shown that the consideration of Poisson's ratio implies change in material behavior in function of the air voids, resulting different creep compliances in the horizontal and vertical, not matching the logic increasing of stiffness with the decreasing of the air voids. It was also proved that the Poisson ratio is totally incorrect for viscoelastic materials and assume it as constant neglect of degree of viscoelasticity. In nonlinear analysis, the main conclusions were that the use of Poisson's ratio may overestimate the stiffness of the material when it is in nonlinear creep, despite the use of Poisson's ratio, the Schapery’s Work Potential Theory should not be applied if considered in the conditioning phase of the fatigue test data, where a model was proposed for such consideration and the results were satisfactory prediction compared to experimental results. Finally, it was concluded that the use of Poisson's ratio in asphalt mixtures must be abandoned, recommending the use of compliances J (t) and B (t), which are fundamental constitutive parameters without the constraints imposed by the Poisson’s ratio. Moreover, caution is advised in the use of the Schapery’s Work Potential Theory, not adapted to the conditioning phase of the material, recommending the use of auxiliary model, thus suggesting the model deduced in this thesis for use in conjunction with the Schapery’s Work Potential Theory.

Etude du comportement des enrobés bitumineux aux températures de mise en œuvre / Study of the behaviour of asphalt concretes at mixing and implementation temperatures

Fabre des Essarts, Angélique 12 April 2016 (has links)
Since the 2000s, road industries have focused their researches on lowering the mixing and implementation temperatures of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) (from 30 to 50°C). These new asphalt concretes, called Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA), created a workability issue that did not exist in the case of HMA, especially during manual implementation. This thesis aims to study the behavior of these WMA at implementation temperatures and to develop a method to characterize and evaluate their workability. For that, the experimental work was done at several scales of the material (the binder, the mastic and the mixture), some made with bituminous binders and some with silicone oils. Two properties were studied: on the one hand the viscosity of binders and mastics, and on the other hand the workability of mixtures measured by the workability device, newly standardized. After a state of the art on asphalt concretes, in particular WMA, on their implementation and characterization techniques, on the rheological properties of bituminous binders and mastics, the different materials used are presented along with their characterizations. The rheological studies conducted on binder and mastic are exposed in a first part, from the setup of measure procedures to the analysis of different behaviors with respect to the chosen parameters such as temperature, shear rate, filler content. This part highlights not only the Newtonian nature of binders but also the non-Newtonian behavior of mastics and the sedimentation phenomenon they endured at high temperatures which leads to investigate the legitimacy of the study at the mastic scale. In a second part, the workability of the mixtures is measured with the workability device (NF P 98 258-1), showing the importance of controlling the void content of the sample to guaranty a relevant test. An analysis of several parameters highlighted the ability and the limits of this device to characterize workability, with regard to the rheological studies on binders and mastics
