Infants' neural processing of facial attractivenessJankowitsch, Jessica Michelle 16 February 2015 (has links)
The relationship between infants’ neural processing of and visual preferences for attractive and unattractive faces was investigated through the integration of event-related potential and preferential looking methods. Six-month-olds viewed color images of female faces previously rated by adults for attractiveness. The faces were presented in contrasting pairs of attractiveness (attractive/unattractive) for 1.5-second durations. The results showed that compared to attractive faces, unattractive faces elicited larger N290 amplitudes at left hemisphere electrode sites (PO9) and smaller P400 amplitudes at electrode sites across both hemispheres (PO9 and PO10). There were no significant differences between infants’ overall looking times based on attractiveness, however, a significant relationship was found between amplitude and trial looking time; larger N290 amplitudes were associated with longer trial looking times. The results suggest that compared to attractive faces, unattractive faces require greater cognitive resources and longer initial attention for visual processing. / text

Dviračių rėmų bandymų statinėmis ir dinaminėmis apkrovomis stendas / Stand for bicycle frame tests using statics and dynamics loadsVilkas, Voldemaras 16 June 2004 (has links)
The theme of Master project of Energetics engineering is actual because in nowadays it is important not only design and functionality of bicycle, but also safety and technological tests of bycicle frame, fork and other part corresponding to international standarts. In Master project was created system for dynamic changing force applying on dynamic pedal and wheel strenght tests. Results of practical pedal pushing research and computations of modelated pedaling system were similar. Analysis of pneumatic cylinder and proportional pressure regulator (using Centaurus Plus modeling program) showed that it is necessary to reduce cylinder working cell volume to enable system to repeat 3 Hz set signals. Using algorithms models was created program for data input, processing and visualizing of testing stand. This program was kindly evaluated by specialists of Technological Test center of Faculty of Technology.

The Masses of Proton-Rich Isotopes of Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru and Rh and Their Influence on the Astrophysical rp and νp ProcessesFallis, Jennifer 14 September 2009 (has links)
The Canadian Penning Trap mass spectrometer located at Argonne National Laboratory has been built for the purpose of studying the masses of both stable and unstable nuclides. For this thesis 18 proton-rich unstable nuclides of elements Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru and Rh have been measured with this apparatus to an average precision of 7.8 x10^−8. The masses of 6 of these nuclides had not been measured when this thesis was undertaken, and 4 more were not known to the precisions required for use in astrophysical nucleosynthesis models. The masses of these nuclides were of particular interest as the reaction paths of two proposed nucleosynthetic processes, the rp and νp processes, pass through this region. The rp process is thought to occur in X-ray bursts and directly affects the X-ray luminosity which is emitted from these objects. The νp process is thought to occur in the inner regions of the material ejected during a core-collapse supernova explosion and is of particular interest as it may answer some outstanding questions about the origins of the chemical elements in the Universe. The Canadian Penning Trap and associated apparatus were used to determine the masses of 18 nuclides, some for the first time ever. Our measurements improve the precision on all of the masses, by a factor of 70 in some cases. Our results
are necessary to determine the proton-separation energies for these nuclides which are critical for determining the paths and reaction rates of the rp and νp processes. In particular, the effect of our measurements of 92Ru and 93Rh on the expected production ratio of 92Mo to 94Mo in the νp process, and the effect of our measurement of 87Mo on the path of this process will be discussed.

The Reception of Mo Yan in the British and North American Literary CentersLiu, Victoria Xiaoyang January 2015 (has links)
This thesis investigates the two major conflicting modes of interpretation applied to Mo Yan’s literary texts diachronically and synchronically in order to reveal both the aesthetic imperative and the liberating force of the British and North American literary centers in receiving literature from the periphery. After an introduction to the centers’ disparate responses to the paradigmatic shift of the local Chinese literary trend in the 1980s, the thesis continues with a theoretical discussion on reader-response theory and the uneven power relations between the literary center and the periphery. Jauss’s concept of horizon of expectation and Fish’s interpretive community are adopted to stress openness in interpretation while Casanova’s conceptualization of the world republic of letters provides the framework to study the competition among interpretive communities for the legitimacy of their respective interpretation. The study of the press reception of Mo Yan focuses on the ongoing shift of horizon of expectation from the dominating political and representational mode of interpretation to one that stresses the literary and fictional nature of literature. The study shows that the imperative in the reception of Mo Yan is the extension of the Western cultural hegemony sustained by an Orientalist dichotomy. The academic promotion in the public sphere, however, shows critics’ effort to subvert such domination by suggesting an alternative mode that brings the Chinese literary context to bear on the interpretation. In addition to this, Mo Yan’s strategic negotiation with the dominating mode of reception is analysed in my close reading of POW!. At the end of the thesis, I call for general readers to raise the awareness of the hegemonic tendency of any prevailing mode of interpretation. By asserting a certain distance, readers enable the openness in interpretation and hence possible communication among different communities.

Experimental determination and thermodynamic modelisation of Mo-Ni-Re systemYaqoob, Khurram 20 December 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The Mo-Ni-Re system is one of the important subsystems of the Ni based superalloys engineered for use in high temperature applications. Considering the contradictions among previously reported information, the present study was devoted to the complete experimental determination of the phase equilibria in the Mo-Ni-Re system, structural characterization of its intermetallic phases and thermodynamic modeling of the system with the help of the CALPHAD method. The experimental investigation of phase equilibria was carried out with the help of equilibrated alloys and phase diagrams of the Ni-Re and Mo-Ni-Re system (at 1200°C and 1600°C) were proposed. In comparison with previous investigations, the Ni-Re phase diagram determined during the present study showed significant difference in terms of homogeneity domains, freezing ranges and peritectic reaction temperature. The 1200°C isothermal section of the Mo-Ni-Re system proposed during the present study showed large extension of the Mo-Re σ phase and Mo-Ni δ phase in the ternary region. In addition, presence of two previously unknown ternary phases was also observed. The isothermal section of the Mo-Ni-Re system at 1600°C also showed large extension of σ phase in the ternary region whereas extension of the Mo-Re χ phase in both isothermal sections was restricted to narrow composition range. The presence of the ternary phases observed in the 1200°C isothermal was not evidenced in 1600°C isothermal section. On the other hand, partial investigations of phase boundaries in the Mo-Ni and Mo-Re binary systems and determination of liquidus projection of the Mo-Ni-Re system was also carried out. The liquidus projection of the Mo-Ni-Re system proposed during present study also showed largely extended primary crystallization fields of the Mo-Re σ phase and Re solid solution in the ternary region. Since isothermal sections of the Mo-Ni-Re system showed largely extended homogeneity domain of σ, structural characterization of the Mo-Ni-Re σ with particular emphasis on determination of site occupancy trends as a function of composition was carried out by combined Rietveld refinement of the X-ray and neutron diffraction data. The experimental results gathered during the present study along with the information available in the literature were used as input for thermodynamic modeling of the Mo-Ni-Re system. The thermodynamic description of the Mo-Re system was taken from literature whereas thermodynamic modeling of the Mo-Ni, Ni-Re and Mo-Ni-Re system was carried out during the present study with the help of the CALHAD method. Keywords: Mo-Ni; Mo-Re; Ni-Re; Mo-Ni-Re; phase diagram; isothermal section; structural characterization; thermodynamic modeling; CALPHAD method
